Andy Boyce
Position:
Head Coach
Andy Boyce is in his first year as the head coach of the Grand Valley State men's and women's
swimming and diving programs after serving as the interim head coach during the 2007-08
campaign. Boyce is just the second head coach in Laker swimming & diving history and he replaces
Dewey Newsome who retired after 23 years of coaching.
Boyce guided the Laker men to just their second GLIAC title in the programs history, while the
women finished second. Andy was named the 2007-08 GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year his efforts.
GVSU advanced a record number of student-athletes to the 2008 NCAA Championships where the
Laker women placed 16th and the Laker men 21st. Boyce began his career at Grand Valley State in
2004 as an assistant coach and was elevated to associate head coach in 2007. Andy made his mark
on the program immediately as the 2007-08 squads set 20 varsity records and established a singleseason record for all-time top 10 marks.
Boyce served as a graduate assistant at Ball State from August of 2002 through May of 2004. Andy
was a four-year letter winner for the Cardinals in the pool and was a member of the 200 medley
and 400 medley relays that established school records during his time in Muncie. Boyce was a twotime, all-state selection at Grand Rapids Northview High School where he was named Most Valuable
Swimmer three times. Andy was also a three-time all-area honoree.
Roger Karns
Position:
Assistant Coach
Roger Karns came to Grand Valley State in 2008 after an 18-year career as the head boy's and girl's
swimming coach at Wawasee High School in Syracuse, Indiana. Karns, who is an American Swim
Coaches' Association level 5 coach, guided Wawasee to nine boys and three girls Indiana Sectional
team championships. In addition, Wawasee claimed four Northern Lakes Conference girls titles and
three boys crowns. Karns led Wawasee to a 359-130-2 dual meet record. Individually, Karns was
named Northern Lakes Conference and Indiana Sectional Coach of the Year 18 times. Karns
graduated from Ball State University with a bachelor's degree in education in 1980 and earned a
master's in education in from Indiana University-South Bend in 1990. Roger was a two-year
letterwinner in swimming at Ball State (1975-76) and was a part of the record-setting 800 free
relay team. Roger and his wife, Vicki, have three children: Laura (25), Tyler (22) and Lydia (17).

freestyle with times of 4:11.57 and 46.73, respectively.
2007 GLIAC Championships: Part of a fifth place finish in the 200 yd Freestyle Relay with a team
time of 1:27.28...Finished seventh in the 200 yd IM with a time of 1:57.72...Placed fifth in the 300
yd Freestyle with a time of 1:43.74...Led relay team to a third place finish in the 800 yd Freestyle
Relay with a team time of 6:56.21...Finished ninth in the 100 yd Freestyle with a time of
