E XC H A N G E C L U B o f M A T TO O N NEWSVIEWS HOPE—COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Althea Pendergast of the “Hope-Coalition Against Domestic Violence for East Central Illinois” spoke to the Exchange Club of Mattoon about the local program. The mission of HOPE is to empower persons to live independent, non-violent lives through the provisions of Housing, Outreach, Prevention, and Education. The program manages a shelter for women and children in abusive relationships. She said shelter is almost always full and last year the Coalition received over 1500 calls. She also pointed out that about 25% of high school relationships are abusive. Some of the services the Coalition provides besides housing are legal advocacy for victims, emergency transportation and counseling for the children of abusive relationships. Much of the Coalition’s work is aimed at the children in the abusive relationships through after school programs and special counseling because women and children find it hard to bond when the women are being abused. To help in providing these services the Exchange Club of Mattoon made a $200 donation. The Prevention of Child Abuse is one of the Exchange Club’s main objectives. Covenant of Service Accepting the divine privilege of single and collective responsibility as life's noblest gift, I covenant with my fellow Exchangites: To consecrate my best energies to the uplifting of Social, Religious, Political, and Business ideals; To discharge the debt I owe to those of high and low estate who have served and sacrificed that the heritage of American citizenship might be mine; To honor and respect law, to serve my fellowmen and to uphold the ideals and institutions of my Country; To implant the life-giving, society-building spirit of Service and Comradeship in my social and business relationships; To serve in Unity with those seeking better conditions, better understandings, and greater opportunities for all. NEWSVIEWS Page 2 RUN FOR KIDS SAKE — 2018 Not many of the Exchange Clubs can tell of having a new fund raising event, a chair of the event and new member all within a month. Yes, that is exactly what has occurred. Wait he then brings a new member within two weeks, okay top that Exchange Clubs. The Board of the Exchange Club of Mattoon has approved and Chair Rankin has outlined the preparations needed for the scheduling of what will become an annual “Run for Kids’ Sake”. How to finance this venture? Members have verbally put forth support after Jimmy Rankins presentation on the proposed Half Marathon and 5 K and 10 K events planned for February 17, 2018. With experience in chairing or helping to organize events like this many vendors for shirts, medals, timing bibs are preparing for this 2018 event. While we have several members and their spouses who regularly run we have many members that are willing to help in making this event a community friendly happening. This early Pre-Spring event will be looking for those runners that are tired of the winter blahs and ready to tune up for the running season. This event will be scheduled through Active.com which is a runner, bikers and trail adventures national web site that once registered sends out e-mails of events that are near your location or is easily used to find events near you. EDITOR RAMBLINGS I am 74 years old and I have so many unanswered questions. I still haven't found out who let the dogs out or where the beef is... I still don't know how to get to Sesame Street, and in this age of technology, why doesn't Dora just use Google Maps? Why do all flavors of fruit loops taste exactly the same, or just how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? Why are eggs and light bulbs packaged in flimsy containers, but batteries are secured in plastic that's tough as nails? Ever buy scissors? You need scissors to cut into the packaging of scissors! I still don't understand why there is Braille on drive up ATM's or why "abbreviated" is such a long word. Why is there a "D" in "fridge" but not in "refrigerator”? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor yet dish-washing liquid is made with real lemons? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? And why do you have to "put your two cents in"...but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"...where's that extra penny going to anyway? Why does the Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same tune, and why did you just try to sing those two previous songs? And just what or who is Victoria's secret. And what would you do for a Klondike bar when you know as soon as you bite into it it's gonna fall apart? Does she or doesn't she what? Why do you care if I got milk? And do you really think I am this witty?! I actually got this from a friend, who stole it from her brother's girlfriend's uncle's cousin's baby momma's doctor who lived next door to an old classmate's mail man! Don't give up, Don't ever give up! NEWSVIEWS Page 3 CLUB MEMBERS DONATION to the HOMELESS I just wanted to say "Thank you" to the Exchange Club for collecting a donation of $88 to help the homeless for C-U at Home's One Winter Night Event. I was truly blown away by your generosity to help our beautiful friends without an address in another community. My 8 year old son and I endured the 15 degree bitter cold sleeping in a box that night to raise awareness and funds for the homeless and even though it was bitter cold, the experience warmed our hearts. It was truly humbling to know that so many have to sleep on the streets night after night and we only had to get through one night. It was incredibly amazing to see friends, family, and even strangers bond together to help our total reach $1,597!!! We were $597 over our goal. Even though these beautiful people aren't homeless in Mattoon and even though this event was not in Mattoon, the fact that you still had the heart and thoughtfulness to help out truly shows that our world is smaller than we realize and that the hearts of others are bigger than we realize. Thank you so much! May God bless all the ways you help others and do your part to make this world a better place. Thanks again- Christine Leeb (Christy Mercer) NEWSVIEWS FILLER Tugboat Captains Way down upon the Mississippi River, two tugboat captains, who had been friends for years, would always cry, “Aye!” and blow their whistles when ever they passed each other. A new crewman asked his boat’s mate, “What do they do that for?” The mate looked surprised and replied, ‘You mean that you’ve never heard of an aye for and aye and a toot for a toot?” ============================================================================ Station: Mattoon; Last Spring Frost (50% Probability) April 16 ; First Fall Frost (50% Probability) October 18 ; Growing Season 184 days. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++NEW MEMBERS YA WE GOTTUM+++++++++++++++++++++++ Jim Rankin is shown being inducted, was our latest member; until he brought Randi Bohannon to meeting who is now our newest member.
