International exchange with top
study destinations in the world...
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I salute our Outreach and Civic Engagement Unit for calling for a timely event, “Outreach and Cultural Exchange
Across Nations”, to emphasize the importance of STUDY ABROAD in a globalized world. Unprecedented technological advances have brought the different parts of the world so closer together, allowed for instant communication among people no matter where they are, and given us the opportunity to share our joy with, and
express our sorrow to, our loved ones across the OCEANS. Unfortunately, these invaluable benefits have been
threatened by the ability of technology to lay bare the cultural, economic, political, and religious, differences
that characterize the different human tribes-- a phenomenon that brought humanity nothing but intolerance,
violence, destruction, and waste.
Within this context, the role of institutions of higher education across nations becomes paramount. As we provide the opportunity for the youth of this world to earn their education and contribute in a significant way to a
healthy advancement of the global village, we need to establish powerful means whereby young people, the
leaders of tomorrow, from different parts of the world come together to learn about each other and conclude
that their differences are enriching sources of strength and not threatening sources of divisiveness. STUDY
ABROAD programs which allow for exchange of students among colleges and universities the world over is and
should be a means of choice to making sure that our differences bring us together instead of setting us asunder. I congratulate OCE for taking this important awareness initiative and invite all of us to come together on
April 18, 2012 to underline the importance of STUDY ABROAD as an effective means to healing the wounds of
divisiveness from which humanity is currently suffering so much. I look forward to welcoming you at this important event. Thank you.
LAU is delighted to offer study abroad and international exchange opportunities for our students and to showcase the university as a destination for foreign students. We believe that a meaningful education is no longer
possible without understanding and experiencing the world. As such, on April 18, 2012 we are launching the
OCEAN study abroad fair on our Beirut Campus to offer cultural and educational information for all those who
are interested. Studying abroad implies an expansion of horizons and inevitably leads to discovery of self. We
urge everyone to join us in the cultural adventure. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the inspired and
tireless OCE team under the directorship of Elie Samia and to single out our Study Abroad Coordinator, Dina
Abdul Rahman, who has put an ambitious and exciting program together.
The Outreach and Civic Engagement department honors, through its organization of the first study abroad day
and the Outreach and Cultural Exchange Across Nations event, the spirit of LAU’s mission statement. Our objective is to promote study abroad and cultural exchange opportunities between LAU and the top worldwide destinations in the world. We consider our students as global citizens longing to interact creatively with their peers
all over the world. Cultural enrichment is the fruit of openness and nothing but openness. Let us embark on
the journey of exploring possibilities for study abroad and international exchange in order to widen the horizons
of our students and expose visiting students to the academic excellence and cultural richness of our beloved
university.

Why Study Abroad ?
The study abroad theory provides many different purposes that encourage institutions and students all over the world to embark on
study abroad/international exchange ventures.
LAU is committed to academic excellence, student-centeredness, civic engagement, the advancement of scholarship, the education of
“the whole person, and the formation of leaders in a diverse world”. Therefore, providing distinguished study abroad opportunities for
our students has been amongst our priorities especially that a study abroad experience would allow our students to acquire:
intellectual growth ;
independence and maturity ;
a broader perspective on economic, political, social, and cultural issues ;
cross-cultural understanding ;
a competitive advantage in the recruitment market ;
advanced leadership skills; and perhaps
another language
In addition to the above, we at LAU believe that having a study abroad experience is a life transforming journey of self-discovery. In
deed Henry Miller sums up the study abroad theory that many researchers have tried to define, analyze, and rationalize by his saying:
«One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller
