The conventional way...
Simple analogue systems
The simplest intercom systems are known as ‘partyline’
intercom systems. These are either 2-wire (the path
is the same for talk and listen) or 4-wire (talk and listen
paths are separate). These operate in a similar way to
a shared telephone connection, where all participants
are joined in one single conversation. A ‘full- duplex’
system allows all users to listen, and any user to interrupt
a conversation at any time. Commercial partyline systems
include beltpacks with microphone controls, one or two
group channels, and a power supply (master station).

Matrix systems
This central ‘exchange’ operates in a similar
way to a regular telephone system where
one subscriber, or user, instigates a connection
to another. However, it also provides
‘conference call’ options with interrupt
functions. Conversations can also be parked
whilst more urgent issues are discussed.

The Green-GO way
Ethernet intercom: the superior solution
The Green-GO digital intercom is based on a 100Mbps
Ethernet network with Power over Ethernet. It offers
a maximum of 250 groups (or partylines/rings) from
two to more than 3000 users, just by adding outstations
to the network.
System designers and integrators have been taking
advantage of Ethernet networking to distribute and
manage the control and feedback data required for
dimmers, automated lighting units and LED video
display panels. The availability of Ethernet outlets
in venues and on touring shows, combined with
the capacity of an Ethernet network, has led to ELC’s
development of a simple to use, yet powerful digital
communications system that operates over Ethernet.
Green-GO has many of the features seen in more complex and
expensive ‘matrix’ communication systems. It is an intercom,
cue light, show relay and text messaging system all in one.
Each outstation holds all routing data, system set-up and user
preferences. Operating without a central matrix eliminates the
possibility of a catastrophic single component failure. In the
event of a problem, a faulty device can be easily removed,
with its replacement able to clone all system configurations
from a neighboring device upon introduction to the network.
This innovative concept is based on the principle that each
user’s outstation has an exact copy of all routing and setup
information, rather than held centrally in a communications
matrix as in other systems. A simple system can comprise
as little as two beltpacks, connected to the same Ethernet
network with PoE. It truly is ‘plug and play’.

which use a central matrix or routing-engine at their core.
