In Azerbaijan, Oxfam supports farmers to earn a decent living, advocates for greater food security, and empowers local communities to have a say in decision-making. Developing agriculture Food justice Oxfam is working to boost agricultural growth in Azerbaijan by connecting small scale farmers to big producers, and supporting people to grow enough food for themselves and others. We are providing vegetable and strawberry growers with the skills and technical knowledge to earn a living from farming. We have provided farmers with new varieties of crops which are more resistant to climate change. This support has helped communities to thrive again, and more than 4000 vulnerable farmers’ families living in 50 communities have directly benefited from the project. Rural women have also been empowered to engage in the agricultural sector and have a greater say in community decisions. In Azerbaijan, many poor families are struggling to put enough food on the table. Oxfam is working with the government to increase food security and advocate for improved agricultural and nutrition policies. We are empowering 50,000 small scale famers to advocate for better legislation so they can reach global markets and boost their businesses. “This year we made good money. I could take my daughter to the hospital in Baku to treat her eyes. Now almost every farmer in the village wants to buy our new variety of seedlings.” Atlas Mammadova, strawberry farmer Empowering communities Oxfam is empowering and building the capacity of ordinary people in Azerbaijan to hold their governments to account. We’ve supported 50 local municipalities to increase the influence and power of their communities so that they can voice their concerns directly to decision-makers. Coping with natural disasters Oxfam is helping communities who live in areas prone to earthquakes and floods to better cope with natural disasters. We are educating families and children on how to prepare for disasters, evacuate safely, and plan for future incidents. We are also working to make communities more resilient by helping them with tasks such as clearing drainage canals, and building bridges and roads in order to provide essential links to health care services in times of emergency. “Thanks to Oxfam, we were able to build a local road that linked us to the main route. This gave us access to health care and helped us to evacuate people during emergencies.” Oruj Mammadov, Head of Municipality of Kurgaragashli village Oxfam also advocates and campaigns for a more transparent and accountable government. Together with our partners, we have set up a national alliance to support the work of municipalities and established forums to empower women to have a say in decision-making. ***Placeholder*** **Only** Oxfam is a registered charity in England and Wales No 202918 and Scotland SC039042.
