Workforce Wayne
Back to School is right around the corner! There are many ways as a local business, small or large, that you can become involved in
the career preparation process for our area students. One of the easiest ways to get involved is job shadowing. It is an academically
motivating activity designed to give students the unique opportunity of an up-close look at the would of work and provide the answer
to the commonly asked question, “Why do I have to learn this?”
For students, job shadowing:
1. Provides an answer to the question, “Would I want to make this job a career?”
2. Gives a view into all aspects involved in a job. Students can observe not only job characteristics and responsibilities,
but what each profession requires on a day-to-day basis.
3. Students learn first hand what it takes to make it in their fields of interest from the people who know best-working professionals.
For employers, job shadowing:
1. Helps prepare the future workforce.
2. Shows students career possibilities in different industries.
3. Demonstrates a tangible commitment to supporting and improving the community.
4. Promotes potential long-term mentoring relationships.
You can host one student or a group at your organization - for part of or a full day. If you are interested in hosting a job shadowing
opportunity or would like more information, are interested in speaking to a class about your business, or would like to become
involved in the Pike/Wayne Business Education Partnership, please contact Lyndsay Birmelin, Workforce Coordinator, at
[email protected] or 570-253-5334.
Commissioners Corner
The Preamble to our Constitution
begins by stating, “We the People”; the
first significant phrase indicating that
our Country is one where the people
have a voice. Our right to vote is one
very important way to express our
voice.
This month, the Department of
State will notify approximately
160 people in Wayne County that
they have been recognized for their
outstanding citizenship, demonstrated
by a voting record of at least fifty (yes
50!) consecutive general elections.
A special induction ceremony on
September 9, 2010 will honor these
citizens into The Pennsylvania Voter
Hall of Fame.
Fifty years is a long time, lets’ take a
look at what was going on in 1960. I
will not be born for two more years,
Elvis Presley is being discharged
from the Army, the Winter Olympics
are in Squaw Valley, California and
the United States launches the first
weather satellite, TIROS-1. The
year 1960 also saw the nuclear
submarine USS Triton complete its
first underwater circumnavigation of
the earth, the movie “Psycho” opens
in New York, the first fifty-star flag is
flown in Philadelphia (ten and a half
months after Hawaii was admitted into
the Union), Muhammad Ali (who was
still known as Cassius Marcellus Clay)
wins his first professional fight, the
Andy Griffith show begins and it’s the
last year for the De Soto automobile.
Through all of this and 49 more years
of chaos, good times and bad, these
dedicated citizens always found their
way to the voting polls. That is truly
remarkable!
The Wayne County Commissioners
would like to congratulate these fine
folks for their dedicated voting record.
The general election is scheduled
for Tuesday, November 2, 2010. We
encourage everyone to live by the
example set for all of us by these 160
people and express your voice at the
polls.
