In your charity, please remember in pray the souls of Joan H. Lape,
(91) longtime member of St. Mary. Also, Robert Fasone, father of Pam
Merriman. His funeral will be Monday at Resurrection Cemetery, and
Mary Jo Gallenstein the sister of Fran Kempf and Donna Grundey who
died Feb. 10th. May they rest in peace.
You are invited as part of Black History Month to attend the Jubilee
Museum on Monday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m. to hear Father
Joshua Wagner speak about the African saints.
I had the privilege of driving Raymond Cardinal Burke in my car from
the Bishop's office to the Jubilee Museum on February 7. On the way I
asked him to autograph my dashboard. He looked surprized and told
me no one had ever asked for such a thing. He also asked why. I told
him, "Someday you will be pope and I will put this car in the
museum." A friend of mine heard about this and gave my car a new
name "Raymond Cardinal Buick."
History repeats itself --- In the pulpit announcements for the week of
September, 1935 (14th Sunday after Pentecost) here at St. Mary Father
Burkley wrote "Work has begun this last week on improvements and
repairs of the church. The confessionals will be recessed in the
walls. The joists have been found in bad shape and they must be
repaired next." Eighty-seven years later, we are repairing those joists,
but there is nothing shown in the records that shows a great deal was
ever done.
Don't forget the Catholic Men's Conference this coming Saturday,
February 25th.
The Lord be with you!
Father Kevin F. Lutz
From the Old Oak Tree:
By merely a splinter I have been chosen to be the guest columnist.
By way of introduction, I was the first tree planted by Father Burkley
as he decorated the grounds. He and I were about the same height
then. As trees go, I've had a pretty good life. I've watched grand old
St. Mary for a long time. My fondest memories were of the countless
processions and graduations. Father Burkley filmed many of these
events. I actually saw the famous Helen Keller, but she didn't see me
when Father Burkley brought her to visit the school. What an
inspiring lady. She has been dead a long time, but she continues to
inspire people and I was happy to offer her some of my shade.
I have a personal debt of gratitude to Father Lutz. I was under mortal
attack by a chain saw and thought that I was a goner. Fortunately,
Father actually told the tree people to desist. They had already taken a
large part of my top off --- now I just refer to it as a bad hair-cut.
Untold numbers of birds have taken refuge in my limbs and birds talk
constantly so I'm usually up on the news. My roots are all over the
place. They reach out in many directions allowing me to basically
"shake hands" with every tree in a three block radius.
I hope to offer a cheerful word here and there. Occasionally, I will
share this space with the dove of Our Lady. I'm not referring to the
Holy Spirit, but to one of the pigeons that roosts in one of my branches
and watches over St. Mary.
Longing for spring,
The Old Oak Tree

“Grand Old Saint Mary’s” Hall of Fame
This last month we have been featuring men from the parish who have
served with distinction. At Saint Mary, we have been blessed with
many women who have served this parish faithfully over the years.
One of these ladies was Dorothy Brunney. She was an active member
of the parish since 1950. Mrs. Brunney received the 1993 Dispatch
Community Service award for her volunteer work for which she
received $500 gift, the majority of which she contributed to the school
library. She was a St. Mary School library volunteer for fifteen years.
She also volunteered at Park Medical Center, Regency Manor and the
St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was an officer of the Parish Council,
the Women’s Club, Eucharistic minister, funeral choir organizer, Mass
greeter, programmer for the Belles and Beaus senior citizens group,
cook for the parish festival, lector coordinator and coffee and donuts
hostess. Dorothy was nominated for the 1993 diocesan Catholic
Woman of the Year. She was inducted into the Central Ohio Senior
Citizen’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
Jesus showed us the ultimate mercy on the cross when he
suffered and died to forgive our sins and welcome us into
heaven, as Saint Paul says, “while we were still sinners”
(Romans 5:8). Jesus didn’t wait for us to become saints before
he made this consummate act of love.
