General Information
Guitar Workshop Plus is a program designed for aspiring musicians
of all ages to promote the growth and development of musical
knowledge and skills. Our program is unique in that we cater our
instruction to the student’s personal style, level of experience, and
musical goals. We create a healthy, non-competitive, and supportive
environment in which to learn. Each day consists of morning and
afternoon classes that involve a hands-on approach, late afternoon
clinics, ensemble performances, and evening concerts. Students will
also enjoy visits from world-class guest artists and have many performance opportunities. DVD recordings of the student performances
are available after the sessions. The complete immersion in music
allows students to walk away with enough material and musical ideas
to last until next year.
Whether you just started playing recently and want to get started
in the right direction, or you’ve been playing professionally and want
to further develop your craft, you will find what you’re looking for at
Guitar Workshop Plus.
Currently, instruction is provided for guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals. Students can elect to study one class OR seminar
each session. The guitar program is extensive and unique in that
students elect to study the style that they enjoy most. Guitar styles
include rock, blues, jazz, acoustic, classical, country and a guitar course
for the absolute beginner. We also offer comprehensive bass, drums,
keyboard, vocal and songwriting classes covering various styles,
theory, performance, and technique.
Each course combines hands-on technique with musicianship
skills such as theory, ear training, rhythm studies, etc. In addition,
most of these classes include a one-hour per day rhythm section class
in which students are given the opportunity to play with the faculty
rhythm section and apply the skills and knowledge they are acquiring
in class.
OUR FACULTY
CLASSES
UNDERAGE STUDENTS
Classes are offered for varying skill levels ranging from beginner to
advanced. On the first day of the session, all students are evaluated
to ensure that they are placed accordingly and receive appropriate
instruction for their level. This maximizes their learning potential
during their time at the workshop. Class sizes are small to promote
individualized attention for each student as well as to facilitate ensemble
arrangements.
Unless accompanied by an approved member of the staff and a
signed parental permission form is on file, students under the age of
18 are not permitted to leave campus. Those under age students who
drive to the campus must leave their car keys with the office at the
beginning of the session. Off campus students who are under age 18
must be signed in and out by their parents/legal guardians when they
arrive and leave the campus. Parents of under age students must
notify the office staff if their child takes prescription medication. All
medicines must be stored in our office and will be dispersed as per
written instructions outlined on the health form.
SEMINARS
Seminars are courses which concentrate on specific topics and will
sometimes feature guest instructors. Generally, seminars are
designed for the intermediate to advanced player although some may
be open to all levels. Students are evaluated to ensure that they are
at an appropriate level for the course. Seminar students meet with
the instructor all day and, because there is no restriction to class size,
do not take part in rhythm section classes. Faculty led ensembles for
seminars depend upon class size and format.
CLINICS
In addition, all students may attend clinics. Each day, two or three
clinics are offered covering topics such as improvisation, songwriting,
vocals, scales and modes, building technique, slide, percussion,
practice methods and more. Students are welcome to sign up for these
clinics on campus.
OUR ADMINISTRATION
Our administration has been responsible for organizing and directing summer music programs across North America for the past fifteen
years. Founded by Brian Murray, a Toronto area guitarist/performer/
educator, the Guitar Workshop Plus administration and faculty have
developed a loyal student base due to the positive experience,
excellent curriculum, professional faculty, visiting guest artists, and
the opportunity to meet other people who share the same musical
interests.
2
Our faculty is carefully selected and comprised of professional musicians and instructors with extensive experience teaching in workshops,
private settings, and postsecondary institutions. These talented
educators have considerable recording backgrounds, perform around
the world, author instructional books and write columns for music
magazines.
OUR STUDENTS
Our program is open for beginner to advanced students aged 12
through adult. Our students come from diverse backgrounds including
young-aspiring musicians, adult hobbyists, high school and postsecondary students pursuing music careers, semiprofessional and
professional musicians. Students are welcome to attend individually,
with friends or family, and even as a complete band.
ON-CAMPUS STUDENTS HOUSING AND MEALS
On-campus students stay in the dormitories and are provided with
three meals per day. The cafeteria offers a wide selection of food and
vegetarian options are always available. Students are housed according to age and gender. Groups of under age students are supervised
by staff members who also stay in the dorm house. Arrangements
can be made to be roomed with a specific roommate. Please include
your roommate’s name on the application form. A limited number of
private rooms are also available for an additional fee.
OFF-CAMPUS STUDENTS
Students who do not stay on campus overnight during the session
save on room and board costs. Meals are not included but a weekly
meal plan is available for an additional cost.
STUDENT POLICIES
To maximize the enjoyment of the session for all participants and to
create a friendly and creative atmosphere, a certain code of conduct
must be followed. Students who violate the stated rules and regulations or whose behaviour jeopardizes the enjoyment and safety of
other participants will be dismissed from the program without refund
of tuition. Illegal drugs and alcohol are not permitted on campus.
Possession or use of these substances results in immediate dismissal
from the program without refund of tuition.
Students must provide their own instrument and are responsible
for their personal belongings and equipment. Guitar Workshop
Plus will not be held responsible for these items. Participants in the
program may be photographed/video recorded during class or
performances for use in promo material or our website.
Regardless of age, all participants must complete a health form
before they can be admitted into the program. Should a medical situation arise or if there are any pre-existing or current medical conditions
that we should be aware of, we must have this information on file.
Please note, however, that we are not a special needs program.
All medical expenses are the responsibility of the student or their
parent/guardian. Guitar Workshop Plus will not be held responsible
for the cost of any medicine or medical services.
Guitar Workshop Plus reserves the right to refuse admission to
the program at it’s discretion.

four turning platinum in Canada. In the U.S., two went gold. Triumph
was firmly established as one of the premier touring rock acts in
North America. Rik left the band to begin a very successful and versatile solo career. Four gold & platinum decades in the music biz have

Industry Hall of Fame and the Junos Hall of Fame, with a few ‘Best
Guitarist’ awards in various categories garnered along the way. One

Momentum and Shockwave world tours in addition to featuring on
the Shockwave Supernova record. He was Steve Vai’s choice for the
live CD/DVD Where The Wild Things Are and is also in the “band”
Dethklok, a tongue-in-cheek extreme metal band. He tracked on the
last two Dethklok releases and has anchored the band for three
nationwide tours to date, alongside metal monsters Mastodon and
Machine Head, among others. He’s been a musical partner of freak/
genius guitarist Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa) for over 17 years and 10

RIK EMMETT
Johnny Hiland ( Nashville Session)
Johnny Hiland was born with a medical condition causing involuntary
eye movement which rendered him legally blind. He grew up in
Maine and took to the guitar at a young age. At eight, he joined his
family’s band and, at age ten, Hiland won the Talent America contest.
Johnny began as a bluegrass player and, besides guitar, also plays
banjo, fiddle and mandolin. In high school, his musical tastes
extended beyond bluegrass to play jazz, blues and the guitar rock of
players like Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen. Johnny moved to
Nashville in the early 90’s and was quickly noticed as one of the best
guitar players around. In a matter of a few short years, he reached
critical acclaim as one of the best in the world. He has headlined the
legendary Grand Ole Opry as a solo artist twice and performed on

MIKE STERN
Mike Stern ( Nashville Session)
Don Ross (Toronto Session)
One of the most esteemed electric guitarists of his generation, Mike
Stern has distinguished himself over a four-decade career that has
encompassed musical partnerships with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy
Cobham, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers and Joe
Henderson, as well as 16 recordings as a leader (six of which were
nominated for GRAMMY® Awards). An electrifying soloist whose
blistering chops combine rock-fusion firepower with sophisticated jazz
harmonies and his inherently bluesy string bending prowess, Stern
has the ability to instantly elevate the proceedings on any gig or
session he plays by channeling the spirits of his own personal guitar
heroes Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall and Albert King. On
his latest recording, Eclectic, Stern goes toe-to-toe with Texas guitar
slinger Eric Johnson in a scintillating, six-string summit meeting that
is manna for guitar aficionados. He has been named Best Jazz
Guitarist Of The Year by the readers and critics of Guitar Player and
was presented with Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award
in 2012. His latest solo release was nominated for a Grammy for Best
Contemporary Jazz Album.
One of today’s true innovators of guitar composition and technique,
Don Ross has emerged as one of the most respected musicians in
Canada and one of the top guitarists in the world. Noted for the
emotion and intensity of his playing as well as his use of extended
technique, Don’s music borrows from blues, jazz, folk and classical
music creating a style that he describes as “heavy wood.” Don is the
only person to twice win the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar
Championship (1988 and 1996). His album Huron Street reached the
top ten on the Billboard new age chart. His album Passion Session
has gone on to top many of the “all time best acoustic guitar recordings” lists in publications like Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Don passionately plays the six and seven string guitars as well as dobro. He has
released several mostly instrumental CDs, has published three
instructional videos, several single transcriptions, a book with nine of
his pieces, and has worked with Canadian Musician magazine. Don
continues to tour extensively across Canada, the USA, Europe, Japan,
Taiwan, China, Australia, Russia and India. He has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany, and collaborated live and
on recordings with Andy McKee, Canadian singer/guitarist Brooke
Miller, & Toronto bassist Jordan O’Connor. He also composes scores
for television, radio and film, and does production and recording
engineering for a variety of other musicians.

guitar and keyboard players, Mike Keneally’s talents as a vocalist,
songwriter, arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist are nearly
unequalled in rock music. Mike has released 24 albums of his
original music and has built a body of work of remarkable inventiveness and originality. Keneally played in Frank Zappa’s last touring
band, performing as a vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist. He’s

innovative, unpredictable live shows, Keneally has played extensively in the United States and Europe, in contexts ranging from

Peppino D’Agostino ( Seattle Session)
DEBBIE DAVIES
PEPPINO D’AGOSTINO
4
Peppino emerged on the musical scene in the late 1980’s and helped
redefine the boundaries of the acoustic guitar. His virtuosic technique,
penchant for open tunings, and percussive effects are the basis of his
unique compositional style which has been inspiring musicians and audiences alike for years. Add to that his natural
warmth, playfulness, and broad musical tastes and you have
the recipe for what he calls “minestrone music.” D’Agostino
has performed in more than 26 countries, been featured
at prestigious international music festivals, was voted Best
Acoustic Guitarist by Guitar Player magazine readers, and
his album “Every Step of the Way” was named one of the
top three acoustic guitar albums of all time by Acoustic
Guitar magazine readers. He frequently plays with prominent artists around the world including Tommy Emmanuel,
Leo Kottke, Martin Taylor, and Eric Johnson. In addition
to performing Peppino also makes time for teaching. He
enjoys meeting with individual students as well as providing group instruction explaining his influential guitar
techniques and approach to composition. All these
projects although different in nature and scope have
one thing in common – D’Agostino’s ongoing desire to
expand the repertoire of the steel string guitar and to
reaffirm the important role that music plays in our lives.
Debbie Davies ( San Diego Session)
Debbie Davies is an award-winning singer, songwriter, guitar player
of extraordinary talent. A professional musician since the early 1980s,
Debbie ranks among the top blues artists in the U.S. She has received
ten nominations for Blues Music Awards, and has twice won the
award for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist. Originally from
Los Angeles, Davies cut her teeth playing in blues and rock ‘n roll
bands in the San Francisco Bay area before returning to Los Angeles
in 1984. In 1988 she was recruited by the legendary Albert Collins to
join the Icebreakers, and for the next three years she was a featured
guitarist performing behind one of the most innovative bluesmen of
all time. During her tenure with Albert, Debbie was invited to perform
on a John Mayall album and she recorded with Albert Collins and the
Icebreakers on a Grammy nominated album. Debbie has produced
eleven solo recordings. The roster of other artists who Debbie has
worked with reads like a who’s who of the blues: Albert Collins, Ike
Turner, James Cotton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Coco Montoya, Duke
Robillard, Tommy Shannon, Chris “Whipper” Layton, Sugar Ray
Norcia, Mudcat Ward, Charlie Musselwhite, Bruce Katz, Per Hanson,
Noel Neal, and Rod Carey. A thirty-year veteran of the road, Debbie

MODERN ACOUSTIC GUITAR (Toronto Session)
with special guests Tony MacAlpine and Mike Keneally
with week-long resident artist Antoine Dufour and
special guest Don Ross
This exciting seminar will help you take your playing way beyond
the next level! If you want licks, ideas, techniques, and just overall
fun, look no further! Topics will include, but will not be limited to,
sweeping, hybrid techniques, tapping, hammer on out of nowhere,
rhythmic displaced arpeggios, modes and scales, various picking
techniques, diatonic and non-diatonic soloing ideas, diminished
applications and more! There will be lots of in class performing
and jamming. Students in this class will have the incredible
experience of learning from not one, but two legendary players in
Tony MacAlpine and Mike Keneally!
The acoustic guitar is not simply a guitar. It’s a whole orchestra, a full
band, a creative tool. It can be whatever you want it to be. The guitar
is expressive in so many ways. Antoine will discuss and demonstrate
his vision of the instrument and what you can do with it. Many new
acoustic guitar techniques have been developed by many players
over the past few decades. Some of them are not quite so obvious! In
this class, Antoine will demystify everything about harmonics, go in
depth about right hand techniques such as thumb percussive slaps,
rhythmic and percussive effects, guitar body percussions, string
stopping, left hand hammer technique, alternate tunings, and more.
Antoine will also explain how he approaches phrasing his melodies
and sometimes, how he sees the guitar not like a guitar player, but
like a bunch of different instruments waiting to be played. All of that
will be shown with tabs of exercises and examples along with parts
of his songs. Antoine’s goal is also for the student to understand
how and why you can apply this whole bag of tricks in modern
fingerstyle songs and arrangements. The class is for intermediate to
advanced players, but everyone is welcome and can benefit of the
course. Students enrolled in this exciting course will also have the
opportunity to learn from acoustic great, Don Ross!
