RF AF strategic command-staff exercise “Caucasus-2016”
Strategic command-staff exercise of RF AF “Caucasus-2016” has been
conducted since the 25-th of August. During this period one has fulfilled the
augmentation of the strategic component and joint force groupings involved in this
exercise.
It was redeployed the units of the West Military District to: 243-rd combined
arms training range (MOLKINO) – BTG of the 6-th separate tank brigade
(MULINO) of the 1-st tank army; to 244-th combined arms training range
“Prudboy” (Volhohrad region) – BTG of the 25-th separate motorized infantry
brigade (PSKOV) of the 6-th army and howitzer motorized artillery division (152mm self-propelled artillery system “Msta-S”) of 288-th artillery brigade (MULINO,
Nyzhehorod region) of the 1-st tank army; to the interservice training range of
the Black Sea Fleet “Opuk” – integrated company of 414-th separate naval
infantry battalion (KASPIYSK) of Coastal troops of Caspian Fleet of the South
Military District;

4 strategic bomber aircrafts Tu-95MS from the component of 326 division of
heavy bombardment aviation (UKRAYINKA) conducted flight to the airfield of
temporary deployment ENHELS;
In order to strengthen the air component it was redeployed to the advanced
airfield of the South Military District 6 aircrafts Su-27 and 6 aircrafts Su-24M of the
6-th army of the Russian Airspace and Air Defence Forces of the West Military
District as well as 5 aircrafts Su-24 of the 14-th army of the Russian Airspace and
Air Defence Forces of the Central Military District, 2 А-50-type airborne early
warning aircrafts and airborne control center/airborne relay aircraft Іl-22.
Therefore, according to the specified data within the framework of the exercise it
was performed the augmentation of troops groupings of the South Military District by
11,2 thousand military men (due to the units of the West, Central Military Districts
and Paraborne Forces; among them the combat units constitute 7,2 thousand
military men, support units – 4 thousand military men). The air component was
increased by 44 aircrafts of tactical aviation.

Resulting from the analysis of the functioning of the deployed command and
control system, south-western strategic direction has been relatively divided
into 4 separate operational deployed areas:
territory of the occupied Crimea (training range of the Black Sea Fleet
“Opuk”) – advanced command center of the South Military District as well as the
reserve command center of the 4-th army of the Russian Airspace and Air
Defence Forces. There are located units of the Black Sea Fleet Coastal troops
strengthened with 2 battalions of the airborne forces (in total 4 thousand military
men and 1 thousand units of military equipment);
Krasnodar region (243-rd combined-arms training range/MOLKINO/) –
advanced command center of the 49-th army of the South Military District. There
are located units and subdivisions of the army strengthened by BTG of the 6-th
separate tank brigade (MULINO) of the 1-st tank army of the West Military
District;
Stavropol` region (training range “Sernovodskiy”) – advanced command
center of the 58-th army of the South Military District. There are located units of
the 17-th (SHALI) and 18-th (KALYNOVSKA) separate motorized infantry
brigades from the component of the force (800 personnel and 250 units of
military equipment);

Volhohrad region (244-th combined arms training range “Prudboy”) –
advanced command center of the 20-th separate motorized infantry brigade
(Volhohrad) of the South Military District. The units are strengthened by 4 BTGs
from the component of: the 2-nd motorized infantry division (KALININETS`,
Moscow region) of the 1-st tank army; the 25-th separate motorized infantry
brigade (PSKOV) of the 6-th army; the 27-th separate motorized infantry
brigade (MOSRENTHEN) of the West Military District; the 21-st separate
motorized infantry brigade (TOTSKE, Orenburgh region) of the 2-nd army of the
Central Military District. The artillery grouping consists of the units from: 291-th
artillery brigade (TROYITSKA) of the 58-th army of the South Military District;
288-th artillery brigade (MULINO, Nyzhehorod region) of the 1-st tank army; 244th artillery brigade (KALININHRAD) of the Coastal troops of the Baltic Fleet of the
West Military District; 385-th artillery brigade (TOTSKE) of the 2-nd army of the
Central Military District; 305-th artillery brigade (USSURIYSK, Primorsk region)
and 338-th rocket artillery brigade (NOVOSYSOYIVKA, Primorsk region) of the 5th army of the East Military District (7,2 thousand military men and 1 thousand
units of military equipment). One has being conducting the activities regarding
units manning.
It was formed in the water zones of the Black and the Caspian Seas 2
warship groupings equipped with 20 and 32 sea-launched cruise missiles of
“Kalibr” guided missile system.

During RF AF exercises “Caucasus-2016” it is performed:
working out by the air component of Strategic nuclear forces the prearranged
objects striking on the territory of the European countries (boundary of the
prearranged missile launching: EUPATORIYA–SEVASTOPOL`);
conducting on the training ranges of the South Military Districts tactical trainings
involving motorized infantry, tank and artillery units as well as airborne forces and
naval infantry units;
improvement of the tactics of aviation usage in order to organize air support to
the activities of the land and naval component. It was fulfilled air striking at land
targets located on the training rahges “Ashuluk” (Astrakhan` region),
“Konchekskiy” (Crimea) and “Andreyevskiy”;
air reconnaissance conducting with the usage of the reconnaissance aircraft Іl20 (CHKALOVSKYI) that performed the reconnaissance flight in the air space of the
eastern part of the Black Sea and the Crimea (from the airfield of temporary
deployment YEYSK);
on the territories of the occupied Crimea and Stavropol` region one has worked
out the mobilization activities.

5 September, 2016, one started the active phase of the exercise “Caucasus2016”. Command bodies, units and forces of the joint force grouping deployed on
the training ranges of the South Military District and in the occupied Crimea remain
in full combat readiness (regarding the exercise).
One has being conducting the movement of the defined units (BTGs) to the areas
of operation conduct. Warship groupings of the Black Sea and Caspian Fleets
have left their permanent disposition and move towards the areas of the naval
training range “Opuk” and north-western part of Caspian Sea respectively. Forces
and means of the Airspace Forces keep readiness to provide the air support to the
activities of the land and naval components.
Alongside on the temporary occupied territory of the East of Ukraine it was
started the command-staff units training of 1 and 2 AK of the Center of territorial
troops of the South Military District.
Within the framework of the active phase of the exercise “Cuacasus-2016”
one will work out the possible options of high scale invasion on the territory of
Ukraine and counter to NATO military activities.

In the case of transition to open forms of aggression by RF against Ukraine the
following forces can be in direct support of Russian land forces:
with the violation of the state border of Ukraine – 518 aircrafts and 303 helicopters
of Army Aviation located on the territory of 23 airfields of the South and West Military
District;
without violation of the state border of Ukraine - the following forces can be used
to conduct limited, selective, pinpoint strikes by nuclear and high-precision weapon;
strategic offensive forces aerial component:
strategic bombers Tu-160 (air-launched cruise missiles X-101 or X-555) of the 121-th
regiment of the heavy bombers aviation and Tu-95MS (air-launched cruise missiles X101 or X-555) of the 184-th heavy bomber aviation regiment 22-nd heavy bomber
aviation division (ENGELS).
long-range bombers Tu-22M3 (air-launched cruise missiles X-22M or guided aerial
missiles X-15) of 52-nd heavy bomber aviation regiment (SHAIKOVKA, Kaluzhska
region) 22-nd heavy bomber aviation division;
general purpose component forces:
operational-tactical missile systems “Iskander-M” of the 1-st missile brigade
(KRASNODAR/MOLKINO) of the 49-th Army South military district and 448-th missile
brigade (DURNEVO, Kursk region) of the 20-th Army Western military district.
small missile boats (project 21631 “Buyan-M”), frigate (project 1135.6) and dieselelectric submarine (project 636.3 “Varshavyanka”) of RF Black Sea Fleet equipped with
all-purpose shipboard system “Kalibr”.
CONCLUSIONS RESULTING FROM THE SITUATION
WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN CONFLICT
To conclude, Russian Federation doesn’t abandon its strategic purposes and
continues training to be prepared to resolve the Ukrainian issue by force.
In the course of strategic command-and-staff exercise “Caucasus-2016” RF
demonstrates its capabilities to defend national interests in the Black Sea –
Caucasus regions by force as well as inability to bring Crimea back to Ukraine
in a military way (by force).
Moreover, one of the options of full-scale aggression against Ukraine has
being training during the exercise.
