I.S. 303 Presents:
One Working Unit
May, 2014 Edition
Councilman Treyger Visits I.S.303
Principal’s Message
By: Ms. Amador
April showers brought us May flowers and June …..Well, June reminds
me of the upcoming rainbows that we
will be seeing in our beautiful blue
skies. Most recently the world lost
one of its most beautiful authors and
poets:Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou was famous for her words of
wisdom, her poise and her humble
yet articulated way of delivering
profound messages. One of her famous quotes is “We delight in the
beauty of a butterfly, but rarely admit
the changes it has gone through to
achieve that beauty.” As human
beings we will go through many
changes, some will be easy and some
will be challenging. These changes
are necessary and will help us all
move towards who we are intended
to be. Embrace them! In this issue I
ask all to reflect on the legacy of
Maya Angelou. Teachers, remember
you are rainbows in the midst of our
students’ cloudy skies. Students
remember, you are going through
those necessary changes as beauty
emerges and you grow into those
individuals you are intended to be. I
encourage all to pick up a book this
summer and read. Who know a famous author can teach you a thing or
two! May I suggest you find a Maya
Angelou book this summer.
On May 12th, newly elected 47th District Councilman Mark
Treyger made his first visit to I.S. 303. The visit was followed by a luncheon
given my Ms. Amador to introduce the newly elected Councilman to
members of the student government. During the luncheon, a slide show was
compiled by 7th grade Dean Ms. Solano to show off some of the wonderful activities offered at I.S. 303. Highlights included the Stony Brook News Literacy
documentary, The Water is Life Dance-a-thon, and the upcoming production
of The Wizard of Oz.. After the slideshow, the students in attendance were
able to ask Councilman Treyger questions that they had concerning the school
and the community. Below is an interview with Councilman Treyger given by
Dennis Kviecinskas of the One Working Unit newspaper staff.
Q: What motivated you to become a Councilman?
A: I was a H.S. teacher for eight years, and I worked in the State Assembly
for the last ten years. I have always been active in helping out the community. I had several students last year that had lost their homes in Hurricane
Sandy and I wanted to be an advocate for them and their families.
Q: As a Councilman, what are your responsibilities?
A: We vote on the city budget which is passed once a year. We also pass local
laws for the city. The laws have to be consistent with the state and federal
constitution. Also, we have the power to advocate on issues that matter in
the community in regards to schools, parks, and housing. I would like to
thank my wonderful staff for helping me with my day to day duties.

Comic Con is an annual festival that usually lasts
a few days in the summer. This is one of the most
popular festivals in the world. This festival honors
authors of graphic novels. That’s why you see so
many booths and people asking authors to autograph their comic books. People dress up as their
favorite hero or Villain. The hotels in the surrounding area are supposed to be extremely luxurious but I’m not entirely sure. This year it will be
held in San Diego July 24-27, 2014. It’s going to
be an exciting event and I hope to see you there!

There are many popular monster movies, but by far the
most popular is “Godzilla”. Right next to “King Kong”, I
have seen some old Godzilla clips and the quality wasn’t that
good. Let’s leave out the black and white for a second. The
movie itself was bad in general. The worst part was the
Godzilla “actor”. That’s right, Godzilla was not a robot in the
original, it was a person in a suit! Now, let’s get to the
graphics. The black and white made the movie even worse in
addition to the bad quality. The audio is terrible. The new
movie brought Godzilla back from the dead and is smashing
in a theater near you. The new movie has much better
graphics and audio. And the Godzilla is a robot and looks
more convincing. Which do you think is better, old or new?

"Hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention," says David Spiegel, the director of Stanford School of Medicine's Center on Stress and Health. First close your eyes and imagine to the left of you a movie screen with
something stressful like homework. Then on the right, imagine the same movie screen with something to
help you solve that stressful situation like absolutely no homework. Do this for five minutes three or four
This is pretty explanatory just forgive the bad things that happened to you and focus only on the posiLondon cabdrivers, who have highly stressful jobs, were put on a diet of four portions a week of oily fish like
mackerel, a source of omega-3 fatty acids, the drivers produced less of the stress hormone Cortisol and
more of DHEA, a hormone the body cranks out to combat stress.
According to researchers at East Carolina University in Greenville, playing non-violent video games
can decrease stress and improve your mood. "Getting absorbed in games provides a distraction and relaxes
the nervous system," explains Carmen Russoniello, a professor at the university.
Dear Stress, Let’s breakup. I am not a fan of stress but stress is a fan of
me. Pressure on my chest, stress, stress, stress. I cannot live with you any
longer. My soul is hurting because I am going insane. Dear stress let’s
breakup.

Q: What was your career before teaching?
A: I was in the construction business and after that I was the CEO/COO of an Insurance company.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
A: I always wanted to become a teacher but the timing was not right. At this stage of my life, I was ready
to make a change. Helping and teaching students has always been a passion of mine.
Q: What are some highlights that you have experienced during your first year at I.S. 303?
A: I enjoy interacting with all of my students. There are so many bright and passionate students here
that make the teaching experience very enjoyable.
Q: Can you please tell us a little about the upcoming Wizard of Oz play?
A: The Wizard of Oz is something that is historical. The movie is celebrating it’s 75th Anniversary this
year. All of the students involved are having a great time, and at the same time learning to build their
self confidence. The show is going to be a fantastic production with lights, props, and costumes. Everybody involved is putting in their best efforts to make the play enjoyable for students, their families, and
friends.
-Mr. Young
Q: How long have you been teaching at I.S. 303?
A: This is my fourteenth year teaching at I.S. 303.
Q: You teach a few different subjects including Italian, math, and ELA. What is your favorite
subject and why?
A: I like teaching math because I enjoy teaching the kids how to figure out problems in group settings. I
also enjoy teaching the students to work with math manipulatives and other hands on activities. The
students seem to be more motivated when they are able to be hands on with the assignment.
Q: Which book did your class enjoy reading the most this year?
A: Some of the books that we read this year included Bud, not Buddy and Percy Jackson and the
Lightning Thief. By far, the class enjoyed Percy Jackson and the Lightning the most. When we finished
reading the book, the class was able to enjoy watching the film.
Q: What are you looking forward to doing over the Summer vacation?
A: I am looking forward to spending quality time with my family and taking a trip to Disney World with my
children.

In 1964, construction on P.S 303 began, now known as I.S
303. The School’s first name was George C. Tilyou named after
one of the founders of Coney Island. George C Tilyou built the
famous Steeplechase Park. The Park lived until 1964 and was attempted to be rebuilt many times. Now Luna Park takes the space
of the park. George C. Tilyou grew up in a family that ran a Coney Island restaurant. Steeplechase was Coney Island's longest
lasting park. Unlike its rivals, Dreamland (1904–1911) which
burned in a fire, and Luna Park (1903–1946) which, despite early
success, saw its profitability disappear during The Great Depression. Despite the hardships, Steeplechase had kept itself financially profitable. The park had 4 fire accidents between the years
1907 to 1939. George C. Tilyou died in 1914. We all will remember him for generations. I.S.303 was later renamed to the Herbert
S. Eisenberg School. He was a former city and community board
member.

The NBA Playoffs are really exciting this year. The Brooklyn Nets had a great season and they had eliminated
the Toronto Raptors 4 games to 3. The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Memphis Grizzles with the help of MVP Kevin
Durant. They eliminated the Memphis Grizzles 4 games to 3. It was an exciting round because of those 4 overtimes in a
row. The Indiana Pacers and The Atlanta Hawks had a series in which the Indiana Pacers barely beat the Atlanta Hawks 4
games to 3. The San Antonio Spurs and The Dallas Mavericks the battle of Texas and the San Antonio Spurs beat The
Dallas Mavericks 4 games to 3. The Washington Wizards beat The Chicago Bulls 4 games to 1 it wasn’t so exciting because the Bulls were missing there star player Derrick Rose if he was there then it would have been a great between John
Wall and Derrick Rose. The Heat had beat the Charlotte Bobcats 4 games to 0. This was one of the Bobcats best season
but they had lost to the Heat 4-0.Portland Trail Blazers beat The Houston Rockets well Damian Lillard hit a game winner
so then they could advance to the next round. The Los Angeles Clippers beat the Golden State Warriors 4 games to 3. The
second round of the NBA playoffs are up and they seem pretty exciting. The Miami Heat had won the Brooklyn Nets 4
games to 1 which was not that exciting because no one was on their game like Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnet and also my man
Joe Johnson. If they were on their game then they would have easily won. The Indiana Pacers beat the Washington Wizards 4 games to 2 and there was a great completion between both teams. The San Antonio Spurs beat the Portland Trail
Blazers 4 games to 1.The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Los Angles Clippers 4 games to 2 which was one of the best
rounds I would have thought about. They both are evenly matched but in this series The Oklahoma City Thunder played
better than the Clippers. So next up the NBA Conference Finals. Who would win San Antonio or Oklahoma City Thunder
that would be exciting because they both are evenly matched but to me the Oklahoma City Thunder are going to win and
face the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers. They will win with their MVP Kevin Durant.

“Happy” by Pharrell Williams could be compared
to Bob Marley’s timeless classic song “Don’t Worry Be
Happy”. These two songs both can make you laugh, can
make you smile and can make you happy. Even if you
don’t know Bob Marley because he died on May 11,
1981, his song still brings smiles to many faces. The song
“Happy” by Pharrell Williams and the song “Don’t Worry
Be Happy” by Bob Marley both tell you about a feeling
everyone wants to experience. Happy always makes you
feel like nobody is telling you how to be. Also, these two
song tell you not to be upset be happy about everything.
Teacher Fashions Then and Now!

Hello, and welcome to a new line of fashion week articles. Teachers deserve respect and praise for the major
improvements they have done with their clothing
trends. They are now following some of the latest
trends, but before I get into that, put on your time travel caps, because we are heading back to the 1990’s. We
are back when geeky glasses were considered a big nono. I remember when our teachers would wear high
wasted knee socks with nurse’s shoes and a colorful
patterned bow tie. Sometimes they would even wear
golf hats! Surprisingly, in this day and age (the
1990’s), these fashion choices were extremely popular
amongst teens and young adults. Now, let’s go back to
our generation. Everyone is wearing it all! Out with
your fancy watches and bracelets, and your new Louis
Vutton shoes.
