Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have a confession to make. I love Disney movies! I may talk a big, macho game when I speak
about hunting and football and four-stroke engines; but when it comes right down to it, I love all those
fairy-tale cartoons I grew up with. I love Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan.
I can never get enough Sword in the Stone, Fantasia, or Atlantis. But my favorite Disney movie of all
time is easily Sleeping Beauty.
Not only does it boast Tchaikovsky's soundtrack from the original 1890 ballet, but it was a
revolution in artistic style when the Disney animators attempted and succeeded in making the entire film
akin to a "moving" Medieval tapestry. It was as if the figures themselves leapt to life from the masterful
artwork that surrounded them. In other words, the entire film is visually and audibly stunning.
The story itself is timeless in its epic innocence. The Princess Aurora represents all that is pure
and beautiful and good in this world. The demon-sorceress Maleficent is evil incarnate, having at her
command "all the powers of hell." And Maleficent wants nothing more than to destroy Aurora forever.
There is no desire for power or revenge or greed in this story. It is pure spite; pure hatred. And that, to
me, makes Maleficent the greatest Disney villain of all.
And then there's Prince Philip. By himself, he's really nothing special. He is easily captured by
Maleficent’s minions and thrown into the darkest dungeon until his vigor and youth will be all but
forgotten. Without aid, his battle against the forces of evil is doomed to failure. And if he fails, the entire
Kingdom will remain entranced in a sleepy stupor for all time.
But Lo! With the Shield of Virtue and the Sword of Truth in hand, and with the help of the "Three
Good Fairies," Philip is suddenly an immediate and imposing threat to all Maleficent's plans. With Virtue
and Truth and Grace, and of course True Love, Prince Philip wins the day. Princess Aurora is saved, and
the Kingdom is awakened!
As a child, this story was simply that. A story. But now as an adult, and what's more a priest, I
am beginning to appreciate just how Christian--just how Catholic this story really is and how relevant it is
to our modern times. Whether we wish to recognize it or not, evil is real. Satan is real. Hell is real. But
so is beauty. So is purity. So is good. Sadly, most of our modern society has "fallen asleep" to this
reality. Rather than recognizing the existence of Good vs. Evil or Light vs. Darkness, they prefer to dwell
in the "50 Shades of Grey" as it were. But we were not created to dwell in the shadows. We are children
of the light!
And here's the rub. On our own, we can do very little to oppose the darkness that surrounds us or
tries to infiltrate our very hearts. We need help. We need the Shield of Virtue and the Sword of Truth:
Virtue as our ready defense against any temptation, and Truth as our weapon to slash away the veil of lies
the enemy places before us. We need the "Good Fairies" of our patron saints and guardian angels to join
us in the fray. And most of all, we need Love. Not just any love, but True Love, Divine Love, God's
Love. Only then can we defend Aurora. Only then can we awaken the Kingdom from its slumber. Only
then can we defeat the dragons that plague our souls and usurp our cities. Only then can we be the men
and women God destines us to be.
Our world needs Princess Aurora. Our world needs Prince Philip. Our world needs to awaken!
And when things seem dark and we seem to have failed in our quest to defend the Good, just remember
that True Love really does conquer all. Just look at any crucifix, and you'll see the truth of that sentiment.
Yours in Christ
Rev. Daniel Bedel

Reflections from Deacon Mike Stratman
"For rejoicing in the Lord is your strength"
In our fast- paced culture of eat and run, few people make time to enjoy a leisurely meal in the
company of friends. Someone has even remarked that the only way to enjoy a seven -course meal
today is to get it all between two pieces of bread! How true!
When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem from their exile in Babylon, they found their city in
ruins. Nehemiah heard of their distress and came to help them rebuild the temple and the walls of the
city. After completing the construction, the Israelites gathered to hear Ezra, the priest, read from the
Book of the Law, given by God through Moses. The teachers among them helped them to understand
the readings. When they realized their shortcomings they began to weep. But, Nehemiah and Ezra told
them this was not a time for sorrow but a time for great joy, "for rejoicing in the Lord is your strength".
The people were told to prepare a feast and share it with those who had nothing.
The spiritual banquet God prepares for us each time we celebrate our Mass is a cause for great
joy. Christ the Living Bread satisfies our spiritual hunger each time we receive the Body and Blood of
Christ. May we take the time to savor every moment when we receive His precious Body and Blood to
grow more in love with our Savior each day!
