Daly (33) The Epiphany of the Lord Reflection on the Gospel By Fr. Mark Escobar, C.S. M ATT HEW 2 :1 – 12 EPIPHANY OF THE LORD E ach of us has his/her own favorite actors in the movies or TV programs. They are like stars in our lives. Popular names in the entertainment industry like Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCarpio, Brad Pitt, Hugh Grant, Nicole Kidman, Tracey Ullman, etc are the hearthrob among the young ones. There are also musical stars such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Barbara Streisand, etc. Or perhaps tennis players such as Tiger Woods, André Agassi, Patrick Rafter, Maria Sharapova, Serena William, etc. They are important people who exemplify discipline, sportsmanship, and competence in their respective crafts. Through their acting, playing or singing, they reveal the truth about ourselves; our longing for a certain cause, admiration for people who chalk up in their professions. These people are stars too because they light up the meaning of being an achiever. They shine brightly and excel in their chosen careers. Every year those who are considered the best or the brightest stars, get recognition awards for their achievements. Today’s gospel is about a group of astrologers who are searching for a star. This group of astrologers is not so much seeking a physical star in the sky as they are searching for Someone who would give meaning to their lives. In their quest for meaning in their lives, the astrologers travel to Jerusalem, the city that is supposed to give meaning to people’s lives. Jerusalem is the city of light. In the city is the temple: the dwelling place of God. The temple gives meaning to people’s lives. In a very real way, we are not much different from the astrologers. We, too, search for meaning. We look for the guiding star – its light. We seek people who will help us dispel the darkness in our hearts; we need someone who will give meaning and make difference in our lives. One of those who light the way for us and who influence our lives is our family. We look to our family as stars. They are lights who illumine our ways and make us involved through our talents, skills, and history. Their love and support enable us to echo what it means to be a family.
