Craft workshop: Making necklaces for visitors in Old Rauma

Craft workshop: Making necklaces for visitors in Old
Rauma
In the craft workshop the attendees are getting acquainted with making a
necklace by using laser cutted plywood and LEDS (Light Emitting Diodes).
The workshop includes practice exercises by using different software for
editing images and tracing them for vector files.
A vector file is a graphics file that contains a vector image, rather than a
raster, or bitmapped, image. Shapes and lines make up vector graphics,
which are fully scalable images, (you can make them HUGE without loosing
quality) while raster images are made of pixels and cannot be scaled up
without going blurry. Vector files can be created in programs such a Adobe
Illustrator, Corel Draw, Inkscape (free), Autocad or Draftsight (free). Vector
file format types include PDF or AI (preferred), EPS, SVG, DXF and DWG.

The attendees are getting acquainted with image editing software, craphic
design software (Corel Draw) and laser cutting technology. Also a simple
circuit is made for light effect inside the bijou.

Editing images:
1.
2.
Open Corel Photo Paint
Open any existing image, which
you want to use in your bijou --File --- Open
3.
Now you have to convert the
image to 8-bit grayscale: Image --- Convert to Grayscale (8 bit)
4.
Maybe you want to somehow
delimit or crop the image: choose
the Crop tool on the leftside
toolbar (the third tool below an
Arrow tool) ---- click the left
mousebutton, and choose the area
you want to crop --- then click the
right mousebutton, and choose
Crop to selection --- save the

5.
Open CorelDRAW X8 --- Choose
File --- New --- Then choose
Landscape for the shape of the the
document --- Width 600 mm and
the Height 400 mm --- Then Ok.
6.
Choose File --- Import --- Seach
the image file. Activate the image -- Right click the image --- Choose
Outline Trace --- Line Art. A popup
window reports that the Bitmap
size is large --- Reduce the bitmap
--- The process is keeping on a
while --- choose ok.
7.
Now the images are on the
software desktop one on the other
--- Move the new vector image
apart and delete the original. Now
you can change the image size if
needed (see the upper toolbar) --Save the image (Save as) --Choose the folder --- Choose AI or
DXF format.
8.
Now you are ready to make some cutting settings in LaserCut software and
transfer the laser file to the machine. Import the image in LaserCut: File --Import. The image on the screen is now like that (below). There may be
overlapping vector shapes in the image, and they should be deleted. The
cuttable shapes are activated and marked with different colours. The cutting
speed and power have to be defined: if you want only draw the image onto

the material, the right values should be used, for example speed = 50 and
power = 12.
9.
It is possible to attach any other shapes to the same LaserCut document, and
also multilplay the shapes. The final desktop view could be as follow:

10. It is possible to attach little components (LED, batteryholder) for a light effect
into the necklace. The led is connected to the batteryholder… the red wire for
the plus connection and the black wire for the minus connection.
11. Now the circuit can be assembled in the box. Combine all the parts, and
insert the metal ring to the necklace.
