September 30. 2014 Bulldog Barker Delia School Box 236 Delia, AB T0J OWO Phone: (403)-364-3777 Fax: (403)-364-3805 Principal: Mr. Darryl Hern @deliabulldogs Wow, I can’t believe that September is almost complete already. I would like to thank everyone in the school and community for making me feel so welcome to Delia School. I am so excited for the year. We had some great events this month at the school. Our Meet the Staff breakfast was a resounding success and was a great way to start the year. We had our annual Terry Fox run to support cancer research on September 24 and a good time was had by all. The senior and junior girls volleyball teams have begun their seasons with two home games and will be continuing with league and tournament dates. Students’ Union had a great time on their annual trip to River’s Edge (check out Twitter and Facebook for pictures). Dual credit programs with Lakeland College (which allow students to receive both high school and college credits) and Green Certificate programs are underway. Finally, we had our first parent council meeting on September 16 and library council meeting on September 11. If you would like to join either or both of these to add your voice to the direction of the school, we would love to see you at the next meeting. Stay tuned for details. The near future will see Delia School hosting an anti-bullying presentation on October 8th at 1:00 PM (for grades 7-12 from both Delia and Morrin and any parents that want to join us) and 7:00 PM (for anyone from the school or the community that would like to attend). This presentation is being put on by the Family Resource Worker program. Big thanks to Cayla Martin from Delia and Norma Jean Minchau from Morrin for coordinating this event. The senior girls will be hosting their tournament on the weekend of October 24. Come on out and support the girls. Just a reminder to parents of children that ride the bus to please call your driver if your child-(ren) will not be on the bus. Also, as the weather starts to turn, please ensure your child(ren) are out and ready for the bus a few minutes earlier than normal. When the weather is bad, drivers will try to be proactive and get ahead of schedule in case they run into road troubles. Have a great October and finish to harvest. By: Kimberly Schipper and Debi Olmstead Fun Stuff: A monthly feature by our Grade 9 Editors highlighting what we think is funny, neat, or exciting. Teacher Feature: E Did you know? lephants are the only mammal that can’t jump. The reason Mrs. Stanger wanted to start teaching was because she really liked kids. Most of her life, people had said she would make a great teacher, and she also wanted to be a teacher as she grew up. She had a lot of teachers that were like role models to her. Mrs. Stanger has always loved Math and wanted to pass it on and she likes that everyday is a new day. It is never the same. 101- Cats 101 is a monthly feature with a different author each month. Grade 9 students will each write a feature about their area of expertise. Who likes cats? I do! I have 5 cats, and they are very cute. My favorite cat is gray, fluffy, and noisy. Her name is Smokey. Cats come in all sizes and personalities, not to mention colours. Wild cats tend to be more territorial, while domestic house cats adapt and adjust to the other cats and the environment that they live in. There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with approximately 40 recognized breeds. Some cats have a really bad attitude towards you and some others are the nicest thing you’ll ever see. There is a benefit to having cats. You will never have a mouse on or near you. If you live on farm, you can get cats for free if people drop them off at your farm. There are quite a lot of famous cats like Snowball 1, Snowball 2, Scratchy, Cat in a Hat, Puss in Boots, and others. Did you know that when your cats bring you gifts of birds, mice or other wild critters they only do this to please you? Also, it’s important to remember to never feed a cat aspirin because aspirin is poisonous to cats. Cats do not think that they are little people. They think that we are big cats. This influences their behavior in many ways. A cat is pregnant for about 58-65 days. This is roughly two months. Cats are cool. You should get one.
