Injury forces MILOŠ to cancel
ST. PETERSBURG – Classical guitar star MILOŠ has canceled his performance with The Florida Orchestra
in March 2017, along with his entire tour, because of an issue with his hand. Taking his place is famed
Spanish flamenco guitarist and composer Cañizares.
Cañizares will perform the same work that was planned for MILOŠ, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, on
The Dali Experience, a surreal concert for the senses devoted to music that inspired Salvador Dali. The
night also features Falla’s The Three Cornered Hat Ballet with two dancers from the University of South
Florida, Ravel’s La Valse and Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, along with images
of Dali’s paintings. All under the baton of Music Director Michael Francis on March 3-5 in Tampa, St.
Petersburg and Clearwater.
Cañizares – full name Juan Manuel Cañizares – has toured the world and is the first flamenco guitarist to
be the guest of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin. In its European concert, Cañizares played Concierto
de Aranjuez with the orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle in Madrid’s Teatro Real. He also has
composed music for the Spanish National Ballet Company and several film soundtracks.
In a statement, MILOŠ said “how desperately sorry I am” to cancel so many performances. The
“movement disorder” injury is a flare-up from 2015, the statement said, and doctors have advised him
to take the season off to give it time to fully heal.
Tickets for The Dali Experience, part of the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series, are $15, $30 and $45
at floridaorchestra.org or 727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286. Kids and teens get in free with Classical
Kids tickets.
Free youth concerts in Countryside, Tyrone malls
The orchestra is adding free Peter and the Wolf youth concerts in January at two Tampa Bay malls,
Westfield Countryside in Clearwater and Tyrone Square in St. Petersburg. Kids can listen for the distinct
sounds of the cat, duck and other characters in Prokofiev’s delightful classic, which tells the tale of
young Peter, his animal friends and his grandfather -- all performed live by The Florida Orchestra with

a narrator. Also on the hour-long program geared for kids is Ravel’s Mother Goose Ballet Suite. The
concerts are Friday, Jan. 27, at 3:30 p.m. at Countryside, and Saturday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at Tyrone
Square. Vince Lee is the guest conductor for both concerts.
Orchestra welcomes two new musicians
After auditions, the orchestra has filled two openings with top-notch musicians: Derek Mosloff as
principal viola and Joseph Beverly as clarinet/bass clarinet.

Derek Mosloff was most recently a viola fellow at New World Symphony in Miami Beach. He
was principal viola with the New England Conservatory Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra of
Indian Hill in Massachusetts, and has performed with The Discovery Ensemble in Boston,
Atlantic Symphony in Massachusetts and Lincoln Symphony Orchestra. He has been a music
fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts and festival violist for the Chelsea
Music Festival in New York City. He received his master’s in viola performance from the New
England Conservatory and bachelor’s in viola performance from the University of NebraskaLincoln. Mosloff grew up in the northwest corner of Minnesota, and started his musical
studies on viola at age 11. He enjoys reading, playing keyboard Bach, and taking long
walks with his wife and their American Eskimo Dog, Sochi. He joins TFO on Jan. 3.

Joseph Beverly, 24, has performed with the Savannah Philharmonic, Annapolis Symphony,
"Chief's Own" Air Force Band, Macon Symphony, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, and the
Charleston Symphony Orchestra. He has attended the Clarinet Academy of America, the
Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival, and the Eastern Music Festival. Recently he was
awarded first prize in the 23-25 age division of the International Great Composers Competition
for the 17th and 18th century categories. Also an active teacher, Beverly maintains his own
private studio and formerly taught clarinet at Southern Wesleyan University. He received his
master’s in clarinet performance from the University of Maryland and his bachelor’s in clarinet
performance from the University of Georgia. Born and raised in Norcross, Ga., Beverly also plays
the saxophone and guitar, and formerly was a state champion tennis player. He joined TFO in
November.
One Symphonie Fantastique performance moves to Mahaffey matinee
The Sunday, April 30, performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique has switched from an evening
concert at Ruth Eckerd Hall to a 2 p.m. matinee at the Mahaffey Theater on the same day because of a
scheduling conflict at the hall. The program also includes Stravinsky’s Scherzo fantastique and Mason
Bates’ The B Sides, conducted by Music Director Michael Francis. Ticket holders will be notified of the
change, and anyone who cannot attend the new concert should contact the Florida Orchestra Ticket
Office. The other two 8 p.m. performances – Friday, April 28, at the Straz Center, and Saturday, April 29,
at the Mahaffey Theater – remain unchanged. Tickets are $15, $30 and $45 at floridaorchestra.org or
727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286. Kids and teens get in free to this and all Tampa Bay Times
Masterworks concerts with Classical Kids tickets.
