2014 PAPD “38 Heroes Softball Tournament”. Champs
Twenty one teams participated, one team prevailed. The Newark C Team won the 2014 PAPD “38 Heroes
Softball Tournament”, defeating the PATH A Team 6-2 in the championship game.
The annual tournament, which raises funds to aid an officer, or officers, in need, was held on September 18,
2014 at the Willowbrook Fields on Staten Island. In addition to the Newark C Team victory the JFK A Team
won the Mayor’s Trophy Game while the Newark B team was victorious in the Kevin C. Murphy game.
The day saw the 21 teams compete in 35 games culminating in the Newark C team victory. Newark C
outscored its opponents 73
11, dominating the tournament on its way to the championship. In addition to
Newark the championship round included teams from the Lincoln Tunnel, PATH, LaGuardia Airport, Staten
Island Bridges and JFK Airport.
—
The annual tournament began in 1998 as a result of Louie DeFelice, Newark, asking Paul Nunziato and,
former Chief, Bobby Sbarra, while at a softball game between Newark and PATH, if the PAPD had a job wide
tournament. DeFelice said he was told, “No, why don’t you start one.” So, DeFelice accepted the challenge and
created the “Shields of Dreams Tournament”. As events unfolded a few short years later with the attack on
America on September II, 2001, and the loss of thirty seven Port Authority police officers at the World Trade
Center, the tournament was renamed the “37 Heroes Tournament. The tournament underwent another name
change after the 9/11 related death of Police Officer John Cortazzo, K-9, on March 14, 2009. The tournament is
now known as the “38 Heroes Tournament”.
The 2001 tournament was played three days before September 1 1th~ DeFelice said he recorded a video during
the 2001 tournament on which are scenes of some of the 37 who perished. “I had my last looks at many of my
brother officers”, said DeFelice. “Never a thought that this great bunch of guys would never play again.”

This year’s tournament began with the PAPD Pipe and Drum
Band along with the PAPD Honor Guard starting the opening
ceremonies during which 38 seconds of silence were observed in
honor of the PAPD 38. The backs of the 2014 tournament shirts
included an imprint of a triangle with the words, “Recover,
Remember, Rebuild” on each side of the triangle. Inside the triangle
was a tree of life with the names, “Gorman, Huczko and Morrone”,
representing Police Officers Thomas Gorman and Stephen Huczko
and Superintendent Fred Morrone, all who died in the World Trade
Center. The significance of these three names is the recent Police
Academy graduation of Police Officer Patrick Gorman, son of Police
Officer Thomas Gorman, Police Officer Liam Huczko, son of Police
Officer Stephen Huczko and Police Officer Jennifer Morrone, cousin
of Superintendent Fred Morrone as the PAPD’s first 9/11 legacy
recruits. Gorman and Huczko, who were in attendance at the
tournament were introduced to a standing ovation.
In addition to teams from PAPD commands a team of retirees also
took the field, as they do each year. While reflecting on the
tournament DeFelice said, “Gratefully the young players keep coming
and the old players even come back after their honorable careers to
be part of something that has taken on its own life...”
