Cordialement, Madame Geving [email protected] 952-927-4176 ext. 2230 Honor Code College students are required to abide by an honor code that forbids them from cheating, lying and stealing, both within the academic world and as members of the college community. I expect the same commitment to honor from you, as a member of a college-level course. What this means is that you are expected to complete all assignments on your own, without consulting native-speakers or translation devices of any kind. Translation devices of any kind are prohibited at all times. No one may EVER proofread your work, suggest changes to your work or make changes to your work unless I have specified these activities within the parameters of peer evaluation. Anyone found in violation of these policies will be subjected to disciplinary action including a letter in their BSM file. Les devoirs (en bref) 1. À l'oral: You will record yourself responding to your video and your chosen article on http://lingtlanguage.com/agevingThese are due by August 15th. 2. À l'écoute: You will listen to music in French throughout the summer. You will write about the music and email your response to Madame by August 23rd. 3. À l'écrit: You will do two writing activities. Both are letters. Respond to the prompts in eight to ten sentences. These are to be emailed to Madame by August 1st. 4. Une lecture: You will need access to the Internet to do an online reading toward the end of the summer. Find an article (en français) about what you think was the most important event of the summer. Be prepared to defend your choice when you return. This assignment is due the 1st day of school. 5. La grammaire: You will do a series of online verb practice activities to review and sharpen what we've already learned. Don’t worry about getting a perfect score so much as self-assessing which verbs/tenses you still need to work on. You will take screenshots of these and email them in one document IN ONE EMAIL to Madame by August 15th. Les devoirs (en long): 1. Listen to songs in French from Youtube, CDs, iTunes, or other places. Pick some of the songs that you listen to en français and keep a log of the artists, the song titles, and the countries of origin. You must have at least 15 songs from different artists on your log. You don’t have to buy the songs; just find songs that you can listen to for free. Choose one song that you feel strongly about and write at least 8-10 sentences en français in which you: Describe what you understand the song to mean, or what you think it’s about. Tell what you love or hate about it and why. Research and tell me what you found out about the artist (cite your sources). Due by August 23rd: your log and your short paragraph about one song. 2. Find an online newspaper article, en français, which you think describes the most significant event of the summer. Read the article thoroughly, fill out the "Les actualités worksheet", then plan the argument you will make to the class to convince them that this was, indeed, the most significant event of the summer. You must have at least three, logical and coherent arguments, and you must cite the article to support your arguments. Please don’t pick an article/event that you can’t thoughtfully support with evidence from your article. Fill out the "Les actualités" worksheet (at the end of this document) and bring it with your printed article to class on the 1 st day of class. 3. Watch a broadcast or video en français (at least 1 min). Take notes. Research in French some information that corresponds to the topic. Reflect and then compare the video source with your written source. Make a 60-120 second recording on the http://lingtlanguage.com/ageving site. Tell en français about what you saw and read, and integrate the information from both sources in your recording. Due by August 15th. 4. À l'écrit a. Write a postcard to a friend telling him/her what you did last weekend. Pay attention to the use of the passé composé vs. imparfait. Write at least 8-10 sentences in your best French. Be sure to use appropriate expressions and format. Include appropriate greetings and farewells. Due by August 1st. b. Write a note to a relative telling him/her some news you have heard about your favorite cousin. Explain how you feel about what has happened. Is it good/bad? Are you sad/happy/excited/embarrassed/annoyed, etc.? Tell him/her all the details. Write 8-10 sentences in your best French. Be sure to use appropriate expressions, courtesy, and letter format. Include appropriate greetings and farewells. Due by August 1st. 6. Practice conjugating verbs with activities from Tex's French verb practice site. Here is the link: http://www.laits.utexas.edu/fi/vp/ For each verb tense chosen on the chart below, conjugate at least 3 verbs per chosen verb type plus one more of your choice. (For example, you would conjugate at least 3 different "er" verbs in the conditionnel, the conditionnel passé, the futur, the imparfait, the passé composé, the plus-que-parfait, and the présent. Then you would conjugate at least 3 different "ir" verbs in the conditionnel, the conditionnel passé, the futur, etc., and so on for each verb type.) Take a screenshot of each activity upon completion and create a document with all of the screenshots. Email the document to Madame by August 15th.
