100 GAMES AT OLD SCOTCH
Two players reach important milestones at St .
Pius today. Our popular young reserves captain Chris
Ray plays his 100th game and Noel Swainger, the
youngest member of a hard-working family, plays
his 50th . Both "Whisper" and "Ita" also played all
their under-age football with the junior body of our
club and so, between them have probably worn our
club jumper on about 400 occasions . Both of these
talented young players have a lot of football ahead
of them and it is hoped that they will continue to
play great football for our club for years to come .
All at Old Scotch congratulate John Carlyle on
achieving the milestone of 100 games for the club .,\
staunch defender with the juniors and reserves, John
has worked hard for his club for many years . Well
done, John! Keep up the good work .
SOCIAL HIGHLIGHTS AT OLD PARADIANS
Old Paradians players, members and supporters
are reminded of two of the years social highlights
Tonight the 25th is the annual talent night where
those talented on and off the field get to show their
on-stage ability - or lack of . The venue is Damian
Bibby 's and the performances will be preceded by a
barbecue tea .
On Wednesday the 29th is the annual sportsmen,
night at Heidelberg Town Hall . This year's guest
speaker is Jack Rennie of boxing fame . The s25
admission includes a meal, drinks, a ticket in thc
51000 draw and a very entertaining evening . Startine
time is 7 .00 p .m . For information contact Brendon
McCusker on 546 1278 or John Boland on 723 1145 .
GERNS REACHES HIS 100TH
Today marks Roger Gerny's 100th game for Old
Haileyburians . Roger has missed only three games
on the way to his "ton" . The 23-year-old veteran has
a number of highlights to his credit, including the
1978 Junior Section 2 competition best and fairest,
the club's Under 19 best and fairest in that years'
premiership team, the club's senior best and fairest
in 1979 and state amateur representation . "Gerns"
has played the majority of his footy on the wing,
with an occasional spell as a rover or half-forward
flanker. His raking left-foots kicks are something of
a mix of Neville Fields and a soccer forward's corner
kick, and the former high jump champ is well known
for his ambidexterity . The athletic no . 19 is also one
of the first seen in the bar for a convivial aftermatch drink with friend and foe alike. After some
dismal attempts at motor sport, Gerns seems to
have found his sporting niche at Old Haileybury .
Well done Roger and all the best for the future from
all at O .H .

BELATED 50TH GAMES AT OLD PARADIAN S
A belated but no less hearty congratulations to
Steve Exton on achieving 50 games played in the
Old Paradians successful game against Coburg in
round 9 . A wingman by profession, Steve's chief
assets are his explosive pace and ball gathering ability
once it hits the ground (something to do with living
on a spud farm perhaps) . Runner up in last year's
club B & F, we look forward to many more great
games from you in guiding the O .P .'s back to the top
of the amateur football tree . "EXT" .

Low scores were the order of the day as mos t

but its poor percentage could prove costly .

players had their first taste of wet weather and
muddy grounds for two years or more . In the 29
senior matches played only 8 clubs managed more
than 100 points . Commonwealth Bank had the honour
of the highest score (27 .19) which says much for the
surface of Harry Trott . Two other F Section clubs
scored freely despite conditions - Footscray Tech
and La Trobe each kicking 21 .15.
Re-enactment match at half time !
No club in E Section managed the century whilst
Old Ivanhoe's 15.19 in D Section against North
Brunswick was a major upset which gives that club a
big hope of grabbing fourth place .
In C Section Caulfield Grammarians (16.16) beat
Old B righton but those familiar with Albert Park
will appreciate that score .
B Section saw 2 centuries . St . Be rn ard's and
University Blacks . Both wins were of great relevance .
St . Bernard's moved off the bottom and gained much
heart from its big win over A .J .A .X . whose 2 goals
were scored in the last quarter. whilst the Blacks are
now only 2 games from the 4 and have a more than
useful percentage. Given their recent off field troubles
the Blacks win was a wonderful tonic .
North O .B . was the only A Section side to top the
ton. In fact the lowest scores of the day were recorded
in this section . At Ormond where the home side
managed only 3 goals, their opponents and competition
leaders University Blues had scored only 2 goals up
till 3/4 time . North's win sees them only one game
outside the 4 and their clash today with the rapidly
improving Old Xaverians highlights the round. These
clubs were winless when they last met and Old
Xavs . emerged victorious . I've a notion they'll win
again today and give Collegians breathing space . At
the other end of A section Ormond, Ivanhoe and
Old Melburnians have a very tough time ahead and
only a brave man would select his relegations at this
juncture.
Under 19 football is full of interest . In premier
division leading sides Banyule and St . Bernard's were
both defeated whilst Old Scotch has recovered some
early season form and is pressing for a finals berth .
Zone 1 has seen Marcellin replaced as leader by
Fawkner and Old Ivanhoe has moved into the 4 at
the expense of Kew .
In Zone 2 St . Kilda CBC hung on to beat Old
Xaverians and maintain its unbeaten record . Xavs
and Old Melburnians be second and third with Monash

500 GAMES AT UNIVERSITY BLUES
Most football coaches stress the importance of
100% concentration during a match, but it is rare
indeed to achieve this goal, however at least one
member of each Club must have this ability, I refer
to those unsung heros of football, the Club
Timekeepers .
University Blues consider themselves very fortunate
in this regard and all true `Blues' congratulate Graeme
Coleman upon reaching his 500th game spread over
many years of service to the Blues and previously
with Caulfield Grammarians .
Melbourne University F .C . awarded Graeme the
Order of Merit in 1979 for his efforts to the Club . an
Honour well deserved . Many thanks Graeme .
RECORD BROKEN AT WEST BRUNSWICK
Bob Green, little in stature, but mighty big in
heart, today plays his 279 game, becoming West's
highest player in games tally . This honour has been
achieved over many seasons of toil, sweat, and
persistant endeavour, not only on the playing field,
but also as a hard working committeeman . Bob has
made many friends throughout his career but it is
his easy manner, and jolly self, that we at West
enjoy most . (Enough waffle) . Lets put Bob where he
likes best on the field . He is a hard defender, a good
back-up for his teammates and does his job well . Sir
Bob, we the club wish you well in your game today.
But I know that Margaret WILL be driving you
home after we have a few friendly ones after .
Congratulations Bob and well done .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1983
250 GAME S TO MICHAEL RITTERMA N
Congratulations to St. Bernard's captain and coach
Michael Ri tterman on playing his 250th game of
~ mateur football. Michael has played for three clubs ;
M.H.S .O .B . - 28 games, A .J .A .X . - 197 games and
5 games at St. Bernard's. He has played in all
=rades from E to A winning Best & Fairest awards in
all grades except A, and representing Victoria in
1977-78 and captaining A .J .A .X . for seven seasons .
Michael's career should be an inspiration for young
amateur footballers to emulate as it proves there is
great satisfaction to be gained from playing for the
love of the game and the friendships that are gained
with both teammates and opponents alike . The way
"Ritters" is playing there is no reason why he couldn't
go on and play 300 games . Well done to a fine
amateur sportsman .
200 GAMES AT OLD GEELON G
Tony Brocksopp today becomes only the second
player in Old Geelong's thirty years to play 200
games for the club . Tony started in 1971, winning
the Reserves Best and Fairest in that and the following
year before graduating as a ruckman to the firsts in
1973 when he held this position until mid 1980 .
During that time he was a member of the 1974 and
'75 finals teams, he collected the Most Consistent
award in 1978, and he amassed the magnificant total
of 174 consecutive games before a leg injury sidelined him for the rest of 1980 and 1981 . In 1982 he
resumed playing as Captain of the Reserves, the
position which he retains this year despite a number
of games back in the firsts . Off the field, Brocky has
served on the Committee for a number of years and
is currently one of the club's two Vice-Presidents .
Everyone connected with OGs is intensely proud of
this milestone and we applaud a great achievement .
(At Genivieve's request, however, we shall refrain
from putting in the usual comment about wishing
him all the best for the next 200 games! )
200 GAME MILESTONE AT BALACLAVA
Players and supporters at Balaclava would like to
extend sincere congratulations to a great player and
a great clubman in Dave "Dasher" Henderson, Dave
has been a stalwart of the club for many years, and
in that time he has played many fine games for both
the reserves and the seniors, captained the reserves
with distinction and been a club committeeman and
vice-president. Dave, living in Sunbury, has to drive
many miles to get to training and to play on Saturdays
and no one can ever remember him being late for a
game . Dave exemplifies all that it means to be a
teammate - he knows only one way to play and
that is to go through hard and get the ball . He never
gives in, never questions and has proven himself a
real utility in playing in every position except for the
ruck . He has been a great inspiration on and off the
field to his teammates, and has stuck with the club
over the years through thick and thin . Great effort
Dave, you have been a real ornament to the game
and all at Balaclava hope you pull on the blue and
white for many more games to come .
150 GAMES AT OLD GEELON G
John Mollard is the second Old Geelong to reach
a milestone today, in this case 150 games . He too,
played most of his early games in the Reserves captaining them in 1978 - before moving to the
Firsts . We suspect that this promotion was more th e
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1983
result of the tremendous dedication and determination
that have characterised his game rather than any
significant flair for long or direct kicking, for it is
rumoured that it was he who introduced the French
Cut into Australian Rules Football . This year John
has returned to the reserves (was he hoping for the
occasional light ale during the firsts?), but the club's
sizeable injury list could well see him back in the
seniors this week . Off the field he has been a
committeeman, a Best Club Man, and, from time to
time, the Club comedian : in short, the type of player
who makes Amateur Football, and we congratulate
him on a terrific effort .
150 GAMES AT THORNBURY
Everyone at Thornbury would like to congratulate
Steven Effa Byrn on playing his 150th game today .
Steve has been and still is one of our greatest
performers both on and off the field and leading our
side to a flag was one great effort which he is well
known for - showing his teammates what he is
made of - plenty of guts and determination . Well
done Effa and keep it up .
150 GAMES AT ST . BERNARD'S
Congratulations from all concerned at St . Bernard's
are extended to Paul Dahnau on playing his 150th
game last Saturday . "Mumbles" started with the
U'19s in 1974 . In 1975 he was B & F for the U/19's
and an emergency for the seniors in the grand final .
Paul's other awards include most consistent in 1979
and most injury prone throughout his career . Except
for troublesome hamstrings, Paul would have achieved
this milestone much sooner, lets hope Paul you can
make it to 200 as you and your wife Debbie have
been great St . Bernard's supporters .
150 GAMES FOR M .H .S .O .B . RUCKMAN
The committee, players and supporters join together
in saluting our popular ruckman Gary Jones on
reaching his 150 bames milestone with Melbourne
High School Old Ifoys Amateur Football Club today
against St. Pius on the school oval . The evergreen
"Jonesie" commenced his illustrious career with the
club in 1975 as a 17yr old playing his first 3 games in
the Reserves under the watchful ege of the legendary
Reserves coach, Ian Evans and his dashing style,
tremendous leap and tap ruck ability were immediately
noticed . He played a total of 5 senior games in 1975
and since then, apart from odd appearances in the
reserves, has continued his great career in senior
competition, always amongst our best players . Gary
has been a long serving committeeman at MHSOB
and his drive and desire to see the club succeed is
never ending . Always the first name to go into the
senior twenty on Thursday nights, Gary's amazing
injury-free run and his club spirit have made his
association with our club magnificent . Gary is always
the first one to volunteer his home for our club
functions, ranging from fancy dress to fund raising
ventures .
In 1983, Gary has capped off a magnificent career
by gaining selection in the C,D,E and F grade Victorian
team which played the Tasmanian Amateur Assoc .
in Hobart recently . Gary proudly wore the "big
white V" and did his club proud, playing with his
usual determination and distinction . Gary, well done
on this great achievement, both your 150 games
with MHSOB and gaining Victorian selections in
1983 . Your close association with our club as a
player and friend has been of enormous value over
the years and we hope your next 150 games are as
inspiring .

BALL BRIEFS
MILESTONES AT ST . KILDA CBO C
Two fine players from St. Kilda CBOC play their
150th game today - Bob Hinrichs and Brendan
Jones . "Humprey" has been and still is a magnificant
player at both centre half forward and centre half
back and his play is easily identified by his single
minded approach - if he doesn't get the ball, no
one else does! A big man with a big heart, "Humphrey"
gives his all for our club and we are priviledged to
have him as a member. `B .J ." is one of our more
versatile players. A best and fairest winner at the
club, BJ is renowned for breaking tackles and baulking
one player, then another, and sometimes another.
He is an excellent kick with either foot (or both feet)
and a very complete footballer . Marriage seems to
have brought out the best in both of these fellows so
the club must say thanks to their wives and wish the
boys well on the achievement of this milestone .
Also, after career interrupted by injury, David
Crottie has recently played his 50th game, and what
a game - in terrible conditions last week, he was
part of a stirring victo ry down at Hampton Rovers .
THE
Strength and determination are the keys to David's
game and his keenness to play after being injured
says a lot about this courageous young man . Good
luck, Dave, from all the Saints, and thanks to yourself
and Man for being a part of our club .
"DOC" REACHES 50
David Burgin appears for his 50th game for North
Old Boys against Old Xaverians today . David or
"Doc" as he is known, spent many years with arch
rivals St . Bernard's, where he covered himself with
great distinction before coming to North in 1981 .
"Doc" whether stitching his teammates up after the
game or stitching the opposition during a game, has
been a great acquisition to North Old Boys . Dave's
greater experience and generalship around the ground
has been of immense value to young and old players
alike . Dave's ability to get the ball out of the pack is
sometimes unbelievable as he leaves the opposition
floundering . Well done "Doc" and may your next
fifty be just as enjoyable and beneficial to the North
Old Boys football club .

while Kane, Coventry and Hill held Parkside together .
Old Melburnians welcomed back state star winger. Bryce

"Gympie" noted that in the Reserves Jim Carroll broke
down and it looked like the end of a playing career that
started in 1947 . He was replaced in the last term by that

Perhaps Gympie was a little overcome as, despite

they were annihilated by Monash Uni . who kicked 22 .7

BALL BRIEFS
100 GAMES AT OLD GEELONG
Old Geelong also congratulates Scott Moffatt on
today reaching his 100th game for the club, all of
them consecutive . A fine and uncommon performance
in any level of football . Moff. has played most of his
names in the Reserves (he won the Reserves Best
and Fairest in 1980) and apart from his speed as a
rover is noted for his propensity for bouncing - or
trying to bounce - the ball on the muddiest, roughest
piece of ground he can find . Thanks for a great
contribution to the club, Scotty, and all the best for
many more games to come .
100 GAMES AT BULLEEN UNITE D
All atBulleen United congratulate Maurie Walters
on reaching his century of games for the club this
% eek_ Maurie has been a club stalwart over the
eears, not only as a player, but also as club secretary
in 1982 . His determined, no nonsense approach to
football has won him senior selection on a number
of occasions this year, and it appears that only now
his career is starting to flourish! !
Once again Maurie, sincere congratulations on
this milestone, and we hope to see you around the
Brills for many years to come .
A .I .A .X . STAR'S 100TH GAME
AJ .A .X . congratulates Steven Marks on his 100th

`Chiko" joined the club in 1976 from Scotch College
and was a member of the 1976 grand final side . He
missed the 1977 and 1978 seasons but returned in
I SY79 to be a member of the Club's B Grade premiership
tc;am . Steven has been a consistent player and during
the club's 3 years in A grade won numerous club
trophies . An aggressive and courageous player, Steven
has been a credit to his club and amateur football .
50'S AT ST . JOHN'S
St . John's Old Co ll egians football club are pleased
to note the recent achievement of 50 games for 3 of
its players .
Greg "Popa" Wadeson. Since joining the club
four years ago, Greg has maintained his position as
a strong marking centre half back. In 1981 his strength
and experience in the back line won him the clubs
senior B & F . Greg has also contributed to the club
off the field by being the clubs treasurer in 1980 and
1981 . His contributions on and off the field has been
an invaluable asset to the club .
Stephen Chisholm . "Mr. Versatility" of the club,
Steve joined four years ago and has played in every
position with great determination and endeavour . A
solid contributor who's efforts not only as a rugged
player but also as a determined committeeman has
meant that the club's future has been consolidated .
Tim "A Beau" Evans . One of the founding members
of the club Tim has worked tirelessly to see that St .
John's has consolidated itself in the amateurs . A
dashing player who loves to run Tim has produced
many of his top games as a winger. Presently as a
committeeman and the President of the Social Club,
Tim has ensured that the clubs future will go from
strength to strength .

BALL BRIEFS
3 AT SKOB PLAY 50 GAME S
Congratulations go to Be rnie Snell, Ben Clark
and Dale Gibbon on playing 50 games for St . Kevin's
Old Boys . Bernie started with the club in 1980 and
since then has been a valuable member of our U/19
and senior sides. His speed and ability to instigate
many winning moves and his great accuracy when
kicking for goal (except from 10 yards out) are some
of his great attributes . A keen trainer both on the
track and in the pub, we hope Snellie you play 100
games for St . Kevin's in the future . Ben Clark has
played most of his games as a wingman for St .
Kevin's and he has shown his true class in this
position . He has great ball skill and ability to create
space for himself and is a reliable kick for goal . It is
unfortunate he barracks for Melbourne, but we don't
hold this against him . Well done Ben .
Dale (Buggins) Gibbon has been a real team player
for St . Kevin's . He has played most of his games for
our club in our club 18 or reserves side and has
always contributed greatly when in either side . An
unobtrusive player who goes about his football quietly,
he is this year enjoying one of his best seasons,
being one of our best players each week . Thanks
greatly to all three players and I apologise for not
having these milestones in the amateur footballer
earlier in the year .
50 GAMES AT UNIVERSITY BLACK S
Full back now full forward Peter Huntington played
his 50th game with University Blacks a few weeks
ago . Hunto made the change from soccer in 198 0
when he thought he would give football a try . It
wasn't a bad transition either, Hunto was ever reliable
at full back . Feeling like another change he lined up
at full forward this year and has kicked 36 goals in 6
games. Fortunately for other fullbacks, Hunto shares
his Saturdays between footy and his vetinary duties!
Congratulations on your 50th Hunto !
50 GAMES AT A .N .Z . BAN K
All at A .N .Z . would like to congratulate Peter
Seel on playing his 50th game against Brunswick on
18/6/83 . Peter who has been Vice-Captain of the
seniors and was runner up in the Best and Fairest
award in 1981 has been a great clubman since joining
the club . This year Peter is players rep . and doing a
fine job . On the field Peter is one of the best centremen
seen at the club for many years and his tireless
efforts are an inspiration to all . Congratulations and
well done . P .S . Peter we didn't forget they lost it! !
50 GAMES FOR M .H .S .O .B . UTILITY
All at Melbourne High School Old Boys join in
congratulating young Chris Karamout zas on reaching
his 50 games with the club today against St . Pius at
the school oval. Chris started with the club whilst
still at school in the U'17s on a Saturday morning
and in 1979 and 1980 amassed a total of 20 games in
our U'19 junior teams . Chris' desire for senior
competition was rewarded in 1981 when, after missing
some games through injury, was selected in our 1981
Reserve Grand Final side which met BulleenTemplestowe at Elsternwick Park . In a thriller which
M .H .S .O .B . lost by 4 points, Chris' enthusiasm and
club spirit were most admirable . His ability at marking
and thwarting opposition forward moves is tremendous
and his early season form in 1983 was enough to
gain him senior selection . Congratulations Chris o n
a fine first 50 games . Together with your taller
brother, Spiros, the Karamoutzas brothers have
become very well known figures at M .H .S .O .B . an d
we look forward to another dedicated 50 games .
