Coconut Oil (CVCO) from the Philippines 1 2 COCONUT PRODUCTS The coconut palm is one of the oldest trees on the planet and has existed since the age of the dinosaurs. Coconut flourishes in tropical climates from Southeast Asia to Polynesia, India, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, the Caribbean, southern California and South Florida. Nearly one third of the world’s population depends on coconut to some degree for their food and their economy. With trees that bloom up to thirteen times a year, fruit is constantly being formed thus yielding continuous harvests year-round. The coconut provides a nutritious source of meat, juice, milk, and oil that has fed and nourished populations around the world for generations. Among these cultures the coconut has a long and respected history. Revered as the most useful tree on earth, the coconut palm has generously provided civilizations with all their needs to survive. Its roots, fronds and trunk are used for shelter, light, furniture, and household utensils. But its most sacred part is its fruit, the coconut. A hard outer green shell protects its precious nut-like seed that is covered in a hairy brown husk. This husk provides fuel for cooking, fiber for clothing and rope, which is stronger than hemp. Within this seed lies the true essence of the coconut palm - its water, meat and oil - its life giving force. During the months that this seed matures, it goes through two major stages: • first the young coconut, with its soft, jelly-like meat and sweet revitalizing water that quenches thirst and provides energy. • the second and most potent stage produces the mature nut. After harvesting the nut and removing the water, workers shell them by hand. The inner skin, a thin brown layer, is then cut away leaving pure thick, white coconut meat. The milk and cream are used for the ubiquitous curry sauces and desserts, and the oil is used for cooking, body massage, to nourish the skin, nails and hair and applied topically on wounds to speed up healing. Unlike other oils and fats, coconut oil contains a large amount of the fatty acid known as lauric acid, which is the predominant fatty acid found in mother’s milk. The lauric acid strengthens the immune system and protects against viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Considered one of the most treasured foods of all time, coconut products including coconut flesh, coconut water, coconut oil, and coconut cream each deliver superb health benefits. 3 ORGANIC CENTRIFUGED VIRGIN COCONUT OIL Tradin Organic has been working since 2006 with a young company in the Philippines that focuses entirely on producing organic CVCO of the highest quality. To finance the young company’s learning curve and growth, Tradin Organic prepays its repeated orders. In early 2013, the young company and a cooperative of its farmers acquired the Fairtrade certification, which is why they now pay prices for coconuts under the Fairtrade International standard, established under the concept of ‘Cost of Sustainable Production’. The factory owners in turn share this funding by supporting financial needs of farmers in their network through advance payment for their produce. Since the start of its operations, the factory bought coconuts at prices intended to support sustainable coconut farming. INNOVATION IN OIL PROCESSING The factory contains dehusked coconuts from farm to factory in drums - this method of handling, transporting and staging the precious nuts protects and preserves their quality as freshly harvested until being processed within 48 hours from harvest, and reduces losses to an absolute minimum. Through persistent effort on innovation and continual improvement, the factory’s coconut milk expeller achieves an extraction rate of 72%, the highest rate in the industry. The line of centrifuges achieves an oil extraction rate of at least 10%, which is amongst the highest for fresh and wet VCO extraction methods. The VCO vacuum drier employs a vthermal-gradient stirring mechanism which avoids the use of mechanical components that could introduce contaminants into the oil. 4 PROCESSING ORGANIC CENTRIFUGED VIRGIN COCONUT OIL Selection of coconuts based on quality.
