The participants in this writing portfolio assessment are students of the Freshman English for
Non-English Majors (FENM) Program at Tunghai University.
本寫作歷程檔案評量之對象為東海大學共同必修大一英文課程的學生。
III. Objectives 目標:
目標

The students will be able to acquire the format of an English résumé and autobiography and develop
the ability to write their own résumés and autobiographies in English step by step by first working
on individual components in a résumé and autobiography and finally putting them together to form a
complete and well- structured résumé and autobiography.
學生藉由先以階段方式撰寫履歷及自傳中個別部分,再將其整合成架構完善之成品,來學習英文履歷
的格式及培養他們以循序漸進的方式來撰寫英文履歷及自傳的能力。

The students will be able to develop and consolidate their ability to construct a well-structured
paragraph by first listing a particular main idea and supporting details, including facts, personal
experiences, examples, or explanations relevant to the main idea, in separate sentences, then
organizing the individual sentences into a logical order to complete the paragraph that contains the
topic sentence, which is the statement presenting the main idea of the paragraph, followed by the
supporting details.
學生藉由先將特定主題及其相關細節,包括相關的事實、個人經驗、舉例、或說明,以各別文句方式
條列陳述,然後再將這些個別文句依表達段落主題的主題句為首,相關細節為後的邏輯順序,依序組
成完整段落,來培養及加強他們架構完整段落的能力。
IV. Rationale 基本理念:
基本理念
The design of these writing assignments provides the students with the format of and the individual
components in an English résumé and autobiography so that it can reduce their potential anxiety in
and struggle for generating and organizing ideas by themselves. In addition, it allows them to focus
on stating the topic sentence for each paragraph, providing relevant details, and organizing the
individual sentences into a logical order to complete the paragraph.
此寫作作業設計提供學生英文履歷及自傳的格式及其各別部分,因而可以減輕學生因必須自己創作及
架構文思而可能面對的焦慮與掙扎;同時,學生得以著重於段落主題句的撰寫,提供相關細節,及將
個別文句依邏輯順序組成完整段落。

for a few years and you think that you have gained enough experience for a more challenging job.
Therefore, you are planning to apply for new jobs. All of your friends think very highly of your
talents, academic background, professional knowledge, and work experience. Therefore, all you
have to do now is to put together a well-written résumé and autobiography, and then you will
definitely get the job you wish for.
你是一個 30 歲向上有為的青年,你在現職已任職數年,你認為你已累積相當的經驗來面對更具挑戰性
的工作,因而你打算換工作。你的朋友都非常肯定你的才華、學識、專業素養、工作經驗,因此目前
你所要做的就是撰寫一份完善的履歷與自傳,那你必然能找到一份你想要的工作。
Stage 1 第一階段:

1. Go over carefully the sample résumé and autobiography provided. Check at least five words
you do not know and look them up for their Chinese meanings.

2. Find out and write down the main components in the sample résumé and the main topics of the
paragraphs in the sample autobiography.

3. State in 2-3 separate sentences to describe yourself for each topic covered in the autobiography.

Requirements 基本要求:

1.
Prepare an A4 20-pocket clear folder or a bigger one to collect all the writing assignments.
準備一個至少 20 頁容量的 A4 透明袋資料夾,裝放所有的寫作作業。
2.
Turn in the assignments on time according to the schedule table.
按作業繳交時間表,準時繳交作業。
3.
Be creative and imaginative when writing the parts that have not taken place in your real life, e.g.,
highest degree, professional experience, future career expectations, etc.
盡量發揮個人創意與想像力來描述你實際生活尚未發生部分,例如:最高學歷、工作經驗、未來職業
生涯展望等。
4.
Do your own assignments; strictly forbid copying others’ assignments.
自己的作業自己做;嚴禁抄襲他人的作業。
5.
The final copies of the completed résumé and autobiography must be typed on a computer and
printed out.
最終整合完成的履歷及自傳版本必須以電腦打字印製。
VIII.

Grading Criteria and Policy 評分準則
評分準則:
準則
The total score of the grade for each writing assignment is 100 points. Points will be lost for
grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation mistakes; lack of clarity in meaning and organization;
or not having enough words.
每一個作業成績的總分是 100 分,文法、字彙、拼字、標點符號錯誤,文句詞意、組織架構不清,或
字數遠少於最低要求,都將斟酌扣分。
2.
If you are not satisfied with your grade of any assignment, you can revise it more than once based on
the comments and suggestions you receive from the teacher. The highest grade of the revised
copies of the assignment will be chosen. All the revised assignments will be due in week 16.
如果對任何作業成績不滿意的話,可以依據老師給的評語及建議,多次加以修改,而該次作業成績則
取修改作業中的最高一次成績,所有修改的作業必須在第十六週繳交完畢。
3.
For each late assignment, you will lose 10 points a day for the grade of that assignment.
to hand it in a week later, your grade for that assignment will be 0.
If you fail
作業遲交者,每遲交一天,該次作業成績扣 10 分,繳交日期過後一週仍未補交者,該次作業成績則以
0 分計算。
4.
If you copy someone else’s assignment, your grade for that assignment will be 0.

5.
You have to do and turn in all of the seven writing assignments, and the final grade for the writing
portfolio is the average of the top six grades of the assignments.
七次寫作作業都必須做完繳交,而寫作歷程檔案的總成績則取最高六次成績的總平均。
6.
If you turn in all the assignments on time, you will get 5 extra points for semester writing grade.
每次作業都準時繳交者,學期寫作總成績加 5 分。

Sample Autobiography
My name is Li-Ming Chang, a 30-year-old male professional.
I was born the youngest child in a
happy family on August 10, 1986 in Taichung city. My father is an honest and successful businessman
and my dear mother is a loving and caring housewife. I have two brothers and one sister, and I am the
only person who is still single in my family. In general, I am a very enthusiastic, optimistic, and
somewhat competitive person who takes the initiative to seek new information and knowledge in the
world as well as to enjoy life. Even though I have been a quite lucky person, I have had my highs and
lows along my life journey. However, whatever happens, I will try to look on the bright side giving my
best shot and see how it comes off.
Speaking of my educational background, I graduated from Tunghai University with a degree of
Bachelor of Management in International Trade in May 2007. I had a lot of wonderful memories of my
undergraduate life. The beautiful campus, friendly teachers and classmates, and many useful and
interesting classes will always be there in my mind. Since I have been interested in language learning
and also because I majored in International Trade, I took quite a few foreign language courses, including
English, Spanish, and French, and I even won the first place of the English News Broadcasting Contest in
my junior year. When I completed the compulsory military service in May 2009, I had already received
several admissions to graduate studies in the United States. At last I chose the master’s program in
International Business at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). I joined the program in
August 2009 and graduated in May 2011. I made the most of the two years of my stay in the States.
Apart from my schoolwork, I tried to blend in with the new environment and welcome the American
culture with open arms. Although I was quite homesick the first two months, I got over it pretty soon
and started enjoying the two of the best years in my life. When I graduated from UCLA with a degree
of Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in International Business in May 2011, I had made
friends with people from many different countries, including Japan, Korea, France, Mexico, China, and,
of course, the U.S. Thanks to all these friends, my English, Spanish, and French improved drastically.
I am very lucky and glad that I had the chance to study in the States because my academic background
and foreign language skills have been great assets to my professional career development.
Now I would like to talk about the lighter side of my life, that is, my interests and hobbies. “To
live a long and healthy life” has been one of my goals for my life. Therefore, I have tried to cultivate a
variety of good interests and hobbies; at least I think they are good. Besides language learning
mentioned previously, I enjoy reading, listening to music, travel, and exercise. I do almost all kinds of
reading in Chinese and in English--both for fun and for education, including novels, magazines,
newspapers, academic journals, textbooks, and even comic books. I listen to music very often; I
particularly love jazz and country music. On long holidays, I sometimes go on trips either in Taiwan or
abroad. I have been to many places in Taiwan and visited several foreign countries, including Japan,
Korea, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Mostly, I spend my free time doing exercise and playing sports,
including hiking, playing tennis, dancing, swimming, and working out. In fact, doing exercise and

playing sports has become an indispensable part of my life. It not simply makes my life interesting;
more importantly, it also keeps me physically fit and mentally sound.
Turning to my professional background, I will first present my skills and language ability and then
briefly describe my professional experience. Thanks to my academic training, I had a solid foundation
in various computer related skills, including word-processing, computer graphics, webpage making, and
data management and analysis. Specifically, I am conversant with computer soft packages such as
Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and SAS and SPSS. In addition, I am confident in my
academic writing in Chinese and English. As pointed out earlier, I am quite strong in several foreign
languages, including English, Spanish, and French. In fact, I am also fluent in Taiwanese and Hakka.
Now I will talk about my first job as part-time receptionist at Evergreen Hotel in Taichung during my
junior and senior years. I think I got the job mostly because I did quite impressively in the English
interview. Since I had to go to school during the daytime, I basically covered the evening hours till
midnight. I was mainly responsible for guest check-in, check-out, and reservations and dealt with guest
enquiries face-to-face and over the phone. Therefore, I had frequent, close contacts with all kinds of
Chinese and foreign guests, which helped me greatly with my people and language skills. I was far
more a sophisticated person with polished language skills when I quitted the job at the end of my
undergraduate life. I got my second job as full-time Import/Export Business Consultant at the World
Trade Center, Taichung in August 2001, soon after I returned to Taiwan from the U.S. I believe that my
M.B.A. degree from UCLA and my foreign language skills really helped me land the job. My job duty
primarily included assisting clients to resolve their problems with import and export processes and
paperwork as well as dealing with their other enquiries face-to-face and over the phone. I stayed in this
position for almost two years before I decided to personally get involved in the import and export
business. Therefore, I quitted my second job in May 2013 and took on my current position as Export
Sales Manager at Oriental Empire, Ltd. in August 2013. Our company mainly exports heavy-duty
stainless mechanical tools and their parts. I have gained a great deal of experience of export sales
management and client development. Most of our clients are distributed in Asia, North America, and
West Europe, and our company seems to be quite content with the current business transactions. In
addition, I also work with our Managing Director to offer training programs to our staff members,
including sales training and product technical training.
Finally, I would like to state my future career expectations. After almost five years of full-time
professional experience in the import and export business, I have acquired the skills and awareness
necessary to make an effective contribution to a well-established company and help it continually
improving and growing. I am strongly interested in a managing position in import and/or export sales
and eager to take on a stimulating and challenging career within this highly competitive field. To
accomplish another goal of mine for my life--“To strive for excellence,” I am ready to take whatever
comes my way and make the most of it.

them based on the comments and suggestions you have received previously and complete the final copies
of your résumé and your autobiography.
