Description: Tent of Miracles is a colorful, carnavalesque celebration of AfroBrazilian culture, but also a strong satire on racial attitudes in Brazil and
among westerners.

The amulet of ogum - A Film by Nelson Pereira dos Santos:

Location: FILM AUDITORIUM, Rice Media Center

Description: A blind singer entertains a gang of thieves with a tale: a boy
from the country comes to the big city and becomes a powerful gangster, using
the powers of Candomblé. An extraordinary mix of magical realism and genre
material. Amulet of Ogum must be seen as a forerunner of modern gangster
films and as one of the few films to attempt a political and populist cinema.
This film screening is in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
Tickets for "The Amulet of Ogum" are $6.00 general admission and $5.00
student/staff member.

Description: The film interweaves five short stories from the pen of protomagic realist writer Joao Guimaraes Rosa, each one about the relationship of
the everyday to a world of the impossible. Featuring a musical score by Milton
Nascimento. This film screening is in partnership with the Museum of Fine

Prison Memories – A film by Nelson Pereira dos Santos:
Department: Rice Media Center and Brazilian Consulate in Houston.
Location: FILM AUDITORIUM, Rice Media Center

Description: In 1936, during the reign of the dictator Getulio Vargas, a writer
(Carlos Vereza) is taken into custody and held without explanation. He moves
from an ordinary jail cell to a correctional facility and finally to a penal
colony. But, miraculously, his imprisonment turns into a kind of liberation, as
he becomes a more committed human being.

Description: In this talk, Dr. Brennan examines the ways in which art
museums can function as numinous sites of aesthetic contemplation within
modern and postmodern culture. Dr. Brennan will examine James Johnson
Sweeney's engagement with the Italian modernist artist Alberto Burri,
focusing on the ways in which Sweeney's critical discourses and his museum
installations presented Burri's artworks in paradoxical terms.
