The mezzanine level (the roof of the new dining hall) Below are some words, phrases and names that might be incorporated: KEY FOUNDING JESUITS: Ignatius of Loyola (born Íñigo López de Loyola) founded the Jesuits. Francis Xavier, a college roommate of Ignatius Loyola, was the first Jesuit to go out to people of non-European culture. Ignatius told him to “Go forth and set the world on fire!” Francis Xavier is the patron of Xavier University. Diego Laínez was known as a great theologian and was elected the second superior general of the Jesuits (after Ignatius Loyola). Peter Faber, a college roommate of Ignatius Loyola, known to be one of the finest guides for those making the Spiritual Exercises. OTHER IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN OUR HERITAGE: Pedro Arrupé is considered the founder of the modern, post-Vatican II Jesuits . It is during his time as Superior General of the Jesuits that the phrases “Men & Women for Others” and “Service of Faith and Promotion of Justice” were coined. Bishop Edward Fenwick founded the Athenaeum of Ohio in 1831. In 1840 his successor Bishop John Baptist Purcell asked the Jesuits to take it over, and they renamed it St. Xavier College. This is the origin of today’s Xavier University. Francis J. Finn, S.J. recommended that our mascot be “the Musketeers.” Finn believed the “All for One and One for All” motto attached to the legendary characters should symbolize the Xavier spirit. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J. invigorated Jesuit colleges’ and universities’ emphasis on social justice and care for the poor. Jeronímo Nadal, S.J. is considered to be one of the three central figures in the founding and early development of the Jesuits. Among his credits was the responsibility to explain the new founding documents (Constitutions) that would guide the order. Juan de Polanco, S.J. was Ignatius Loyola’s secretary and assisted him in writing the founding documents (Constitutions) of the newly formed Jesuit order. IMPORTANT PLACES AND DATES: the Basque territory of NE Spain: homeland of Ignatius of Loyola Navarre: home territory of Francis Xavier 1534: year that the layman Ignatius of Loyola and his early companions took religious vows in Paris [as yet they had no idea of forming a religious order]. 1540: year that Pope Paul III formally established the “Society of Jesus,” the Jesuits, as a Catholic religious order. 1831: the year Xavier University was founded IMPORTANT IGNATIAN VALUES: Magis: Latin for “the more,” striving for generous excellence Cura Personalis: Latin for “care of the individual person” Finding God in All Things Men and Women for and with Others Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (or A.M.D.G.) Motto of the Jesuits: "For the greater glory of God" Vidit Mirabilia Magna: a phrase from the psalms applied to Francis Xavier which translates “he has seen great wonders.”
