eLearningSC PD Course Syllabus Title: Technology Bootcamp for Educators Technology Skill Level: Basic Technology Requirements: This course is designed for beginning technology users - teachers, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other school personnel – who need to master the skills and complete the portfolio requirements of Developing Level in the ePortfolio System. 1. No prior experience and knowledge of technology is needed for the course 2. Participants must have regular access to computers that are Internet enabled. 3. Course Goals This course will enable participants to: Updated 9/2012 • • • • • • • • Perform basic windows operations Manage folders and files Use Microsoft Word to create documents o Create a new Word document § Format document – margins, header/footer, font and font size § Insert a table into a document and edit as needed § Insert clipart into a document and edit as needed o Spell check/grammar check a document o Save a document o Print a document o Create a lesson plan template to use in drafting lesson plans Use Internet explorer o Search the Internet using a variety of search engines o Create and maintain an online bookmark portal so that preferred web sites are easily accessible o Enter a web site URL into the browser address window and successfully navigate to that site o Customize IE toolbars Communicate with others using email - free email or- district email such as Novell o Change the view in Outlook o Read and reply to email messages o Add file attachments to an outgoing email message o Download file attachments from an incoming email message o Create and use an address book o Use the delivery receipt and read features when sending an email Set up or continue ePortfolio assessment and portfolio building o Update membership o Take assessment o Upload artifacts Use learning courses provided and accredited by Promethean or on Atomic Learning for Smart. o To transition to their new ActivIspire o To encourage use of ActivSlate, ActiVote, or ActivExpression devices for student interaction o To use Smart 8, 9.5, or 10 more expertly Join and use online (cloud) applications to collaborate, communicate, or organize. Course Length This facilitated course is divided into 11 Modules: an Orientation and 10 content-based Modules. Each content Module includes individual work to learn concepts of assessment in the 21st Updated 9/2012 Century classroom through interactive tutorials and exercises, a facilitated online discussion, and individual work developing a final project. Course Requirements Successful completion of the course will be based on the following requirements: ● Participants must post substantively at least 3 times in each Module discussion forum; ● Participants must complete the course activities and readings in each Module; ● Participants must complete the course final project and submit it to the course facilitator; and ● Participants must complete the orientation and final course surveys. Discussion Participation Participants are required to post a minimum of three substantive posts in each discussion forum. Participants will be evaluated on the frequency and quality of their discussion board participation. Postings will be reviewed based on their relevance, demonstrated understanding of course concepts, examples cited, overall quality, degree to which they extend the discussion, and tone. These criteria are described more fully in the Discussion Board Expectations. Participants will Updated 9/2012 prepare for the next few weeks by learning about some best practices in online learning. Participants will be introduced to the workshop website, and introduce themselves to their fellow participants using the workshop discussion forum. Participants will also make sure that they are ready to take the course by downloading necessary programs and players. Module 1: The Basics of Teaching and Learning with Technology in the Classroom During this Face-to-Face (F2F) hands-on session, the participants will develop fluency in Windows XP foundational skills, become familiar with the Moodle Learning Management System, and develop an awareness of available online tutorials. Module 2: Building Capacity for Teaching and Learning with Technology – Policies, Procedures, and District Network Information In this online session you will learn about the SC Teacher Technology Proficiency Proviso 1.25 and the role the ePortfolio Assessment System plays in documenting your continuous progress in developing and mastering your technology skills. You will become familiar with the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T). You will review basic network concepts and terms within the Novell platform and develop a basic understanding of what networks are, how to log into a network, change passwords, view drives and printers, understand context and servers for their login location and logging off. Module 3: Working with Microsoft Word in the Classroom In this online session you will develop and expand your Microsoft Word skills. Module 4: Internet Skills for Terrified Teachers In this Face-to-Face (F2F) hands-on session, you will develop and expand your Internet skills to include working with a variety of search engines, an online bookmarking tool, and more. Module 5: Using Word to Create Your Lesson Plans Updated 9/2012 In this online session you will create your lesson plan template using Microsoft Word. Then you will take at least one lesson plan that you have in another format (hard copy only or in a different lesson plan style) and put it into your new lesson plan template. Module 6: Managing Email In and Out of the Classroom In this session you will use two Microsoft in Education tutorial packets to extend your skills in using Microsoft Outlook as a communication tool in your teaching and learning practice. Module 7: Wikis and Web 2.0 In this session you will join a wiki site and add some features to your pages; you will join Google and produce and share a document; and you will experience a real time collaboration tool. Module 8: Working with White Boards In this Face-to-Face session you will either view tutorials in Atomic Learning or on the software web site and make a basic Flipchart or Notebook or download content related lessons from the provider’s site. Module 9: Avatars, Videos and Podcasts In this session you will join voki.com, create a talking avatar, and upload it. You will use Audacity to record, save an mp3 file and use Buzzsprout to make a personal podcast. Module 10: Updating Your Online Professional ePortfolio In this Face-to-Face (F2F) session, you will put the finishing touches to your ePortfolio Developing Level artifacts and upload them into your ePortfolio. You will also complete the ePortfolio Developing Level final assessment. Orientation Module- Complete the Orientation course. Make sure that you upload your orientation completion certificate in the orientation assignment block. Total Points Possible = 50 Orientation Module contains the following sections: o Getting Started o eLearningSC Policy and Procedures o eLearningSC PD Websites o Completing Assignments o Checking Your Progress o Academic Integrity o Acceptable Use Policy o Communication and Netiquette o Technical Requirements o BB Collaborate 2. One curriculum-specific lesson created with the ISTE Lesson Plan Template Total Points Possible = 43 All portfolio documents must include two or more of the following Student-Centered 21st Century Learning student activities aligned to ISTE NETS-Students standards: • Find instructional resources on the Internet to implement in your curriculum (e.g., find and adapt lesson resources at Thinkfinity.org, SC Streamline, or SC Discus.org) • Create scaffolding for student projects (e.g., teachers provide students with writing prompts or project templates) • Have students write papers and reports on computers or “smart keyboards” such as AlphaSmarts (e.g., require that all student papers must be word-processed) • Facilitate group discussions and lessons (e.g., teachers use interactive whiteboards, LCD projectors, student response systems, ietherpad.com) • Facilitate students using technology for assessment (e.g., teachers use online quizzes and diagnostic tools, graph and analyze progress with class using Excel) • Deliver presentations with graphics and sound (e.g., teachers use software such as PowerPoint, Photo Story, or audio production software) • Lead students in brainstorming and sharing ideas (e.g., teachers use word processing programs or software such as Inspiration, use Intel Visual Ranking website) • Represent information visually (e.g., teachers create graphs in Excel or with a graphing calculator to visually represent chemical interactions, or probeware) • Interactively communicate with parents and students (e.g., teachers initiate and respond to e-mail, conduct on-line surveys, interact through website or wiki) Updated 9/2012 3. Email Artifact Total Points Possible = 25 Post a copy of an email message that you composed and sent to another individual. The time/date stamp that the email was sent must be included in the header of the email. Signature: Includes the sender’s name and pertinent contact information. 4. Delicious Account Requirements Total Points Possible = 25 Creation of an individual online social bookmarking account having a minimum of 3 categories, and a minimum of 5 web sites in each category. Account has a minimum of 3 categories Each category has a minimum of 5 web sites Each web site has a short annotation giving the viewer a general idea of what the web site is about Provide url for instructor to view account or share in Delicious 5. Flipchart/Notebook Total Points Possible = 25 Creation of a flipchart or Notebook of at least 3 pages which contains a minimum of 5 of the following items: Title Clip-art Video Audio Photo Table Background Timer Spotlight Revealer Font colors Font styles Provide notes Banner SRS 6. Wiki Total Points Possible = 25 Create an individual online wiki site. Participate in the class wiki which includes following links, editing pages, adding a page, and adding content to at least 2 other pages. 7. Avatars Total Points Possible = 25 Create an avatar on an online site and upload it to the teacher’s web page or wiki page. This requires adding embed code given by the site to the html of the teacher page. 8. Forum Participation Total Possible Points = 44 Eleven Forums—minimum of 1 post (3 points) and 1 reply (1 point) to the correct week’s forum.
