M EMBERS M AKING P ROGRESS …. C.A.P. Program Coordinator, Calogero Argento, would like to thank his staff for their efforts in working with C.A.P. members in passing their classes. There was a significant increase (19%) in the percent of C.A.P. students who passed all of their classes in cycle 2 compared to cycle 1. Forty-one in total passed all of their classes for the first half of the school year. P ROGRAM S POTLIGHT — CALOGERO Calogero Argento has been with the Central Queens Y since 2010, when he became a Counselor Advocate for the A.C.E. Program (Achieving and Creating Excellence) at Martin Van Buren High School. Mr. Argento, a Queens native—and a huge Mets fan, attended undergrad at Queens College where he studied psychology as his major. He also earned his Masters of Science in Education at Queens College and holds a School Counselor certification from New York State. "I especially enjoy working with high school students because we can have meaningful conversations," says Calogero. "I can set creative goals with them and we can work toward realistic outcomes." I MPORTANT Girl Talk— a girls only discussion group. Meets every Tuesday during 9th period. Ping Pong Thursdays— Takes place after school in room 153C (C.A.P. Office) Relationship Group— meets every Wednesday during 3rd period. Think You Can Dance? — meets every Wednesday from 4:00-5:00 pm Creative Writing Group— share your creative side through poetry, short stories and other writing forms. Meet in John Bowne main lobby at 12 pm. ARGENTO CAP Programs. With the previous success of both programs Calogero says he has “big shoes to fill,” but that “it makes the job easier when you enjoy what you’re doing.” “One important lesson I learned in life is that you don’t leave a place any less, but rather greater than you found it,” he says. It’s a personal oath he took along with him from Townsend Harris (his high school alma mater), and one that he vows to follow.
