Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly, tells the true
story of the unseen, segregated group of Negro women
hired to build airplanes. When it was realized in 1943
that World War Two “was going to be won in the air,”
Langley Aeronautics Center, needing many new
employees, sought and recruited from Negro colleges and
high schools, these mathematics teachers and students
who performed demanding, precise work which assured
the safety of both pilots and planes. Relying on slide
rules and calculators, they WERE the computers, known
as “Langley’s West Computers.” It was the beginning of
decades of aeronautics and space exploration which
continue today as NASA.
Conclave by Robert Harris is a crime novel that is also a
psychological and political thriller filled with plot twists,
revelations and high politicking. It’s an ecclesiastical
version of House of Cards!
The Spy by Paulo Coelho is told in Mata Hari’s voice
and is the unforgettable story of a woman who dared to
defy convention and who paid the ultimate price. This
concise work brings to life one of history's most
enigmatic women.
America’s First Daughter by Stephanie Dray is a
well-researched and very readable historical novel. This
literary journey takes us from Monticello to
revolutionary Paris to the Jefferson White House. Filled
with historical details and family secrets, it is the untold
story of Jefferson's eldest daughter, Martha "Patsy"
Jefferson Randolph--a woman who kept the secrets of
our most enigmatic founding father and helped shape an
American legacy.
The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by
Rinker Buck is an epic account of traveling the 2,000miles of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way—in a
covered wagon with a team of mules. It is a must-read
for those Sunnyside Residents going on the American
Queen Columbia and Snake River Cruise in July. And if
you aren’t going – it is a great way to experience history
and travel the trail.
A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline, author
of the bestseller Orphan Train, is an atmospheric novel
of friendship, passion, and art, inspired by Andrew
Wyeth’s mysterious and iconic painting Christina’s
World.
The Girl Before by JP Finder is an instant best-seller
and is soon to be released as a major motion picture. A
novel of psychological suspense that is also a cleverly
constructed thriller. It is being hailed as this year’s Girl
on the Train. Read it before it comes out on film!
The Eiland Center Library welcomes new Committee
Members: Gina Holden, Barbara Hogan and Joan Engel.
Leaving our group after many years of dedicated service
are Margaret Hottel, Jean Bohl and Dot Spicer. Thanks
to all of you for your commitment.
Pat Harkins
Victoria, by Daisy Goodwin, covers the sheltered, yet
interesting, life of this woman who was Queen of
England from 1837 to 1901. She married her first cousin
Prince Albert, and together they had nine children, who
grew up to marry royalty throughout Europe. Prince
Albert died in 1961 and Victoria mourned all the rest of
her life.
Courage to Soar, a biography of Simone Biles, by
Michelle Burford, is about a tiny, but muscular
African-American girl who, with the help of the Lord, as
well as foster parents, grandparents, trainers who cared,
and a trampoline in the back yard, won the gymnastics
gold medal in the 2016 Olympics. It’s an inspiring story.
LARGE PRINT
Someone to Love, is by Mary Balogh, who writes with
warmth and wit about a grown-up orphan (Anna) who
loses her last monthly stipend from her recently-deceased
anonymous father (the Duke of Riverdale). A solicitor
explains “at tedious length and with pompous verbosity”
to Avery Archer, the young, care-free Duke of Netherby,
that since Harry (son of the orphan’s father) is only 21,
he (Avery), as the girl’s cousin, is to be appointed her
co-guardian along with Lady Camille Westcott, who is
Avery’s aunt. Got that? Don’t worry; the genealogy chart
explains it all.
My Valentine, by Tracie Peterson, and Little Shoes and
Mistletoe by Sally Laity are two novellas in one volume.
Both fall in the category of “Christian Fiction,” and both
are written in the familiar language of their faith. The
first story discusses Judaism and Christianity; the second
emphasizes their common mission of caring for the poor.
Driving the plot of each is the romance of a young couple
who combine courtship with theology.
