It took discussions with Mr. Rogers to help us come to terms with the word choice. I am proud of the respect in which they have entered this project and hope that their efforts to make the world a better place are appreciated by all. ) PLACE: Maycomb, Alabama SCENES ACT I *Spiritual: Over My Head Wade in the Water Intermission 2 Nicolet Theatre ACT II *Spirituals: Amazing Grace Swing Low Sweet Chariot Hold On CREW Costume Team .................................Morgan Kramer, Jennie Babisch, Audrey Boos, Miki Chen, Emma Lloyd, Gabby Maholick, Alayna Mayer, Libby Noll, Mikayla Penn, Hannah Silverstein Makeup and Hair Team..................................Amanda Gullickson, Lili du Plessis*, Kallia Kaiser, Claire Konnor, Leora Lindenbaum, Anna Sanders, Melissa Stevens, Chloe Worlton, Signe Wright* Props Team.......................................Maya Ben-Yitschak, Abby Goldstein, Gabby Morice, Emma Nischke, Grace Yoder Assistant Light Operator.....................................................................................................Jack Folstein Assistant Sound Operator......................................................................................................Sofie Pfaffl Set Construction ................................ Michelle Pavlov, Emilie Haworth *indicates member of International Thespian Society D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S For 18 years, I have read To Kill a Mockingbird two times a day, sometimes three, with my sophomore English classes, and I loved every minute of it! If you do the math, that is about 36 times, give or take a time or two. My copy of the book was broken in half with loose pages here and there; some passages were underlined and highlighted so many times that they were difficult to read. The margins were filled with stars or comments of how they struck my mind at the time of reading them. Reading that copy of the book, was like having coffee with an old friend: it had been through a lot with me and reminded me of what I truly valued and cared about in life. The thought of doing the production came to me as I was gardening last spring. The idea truly came out of the blue since I was only pulling weeds and pondering the past school year. Suddenly, the thought sprung up, “To Kill a Mockingbird! That’s it! That is our next show!” Maybe it was the violence black men faced that has led to the slogan, “Black lives matter” that produced the thought or maybe it was Harper Lee’s new book, Go Set a Watchman that was being published that planted the seed, but something said this was a show we must do. There are so many valuable lessons in the book: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. “People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.” “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” To Kill A Mockingbird 3 D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S c o n t. “Atticus, he was real nice.” “Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.” To name a few. It is my hope that the cast and crew learned some of these lessons during our rehearsal process and that the audience leaves with a clearer vision of what is important in life. Pick up the book again or for the first time! I promise you, when you put it down, you will be inspired. Enjoy the show!
