President Mike Kidd called the meeting to order at 7:00 am.
Kidd welcomed the attendees and asked all Active and Emeritus members to stand. A quorum was
declared. Bill Saylor was appointed Parliamentarian.
Kidd displayed the Business Meeting Agenda on the screen and asked the membership if they had any
additions. Yvonne Thaxton moved and Billy Hargis seconded the motion to approve the Agenda as
displayed. Motion carried.
Kidd invited Secretary-Treasurer Mike Hulet to give the Report on the Minutes of the 101st Annual
Poultry Science Association Business Meeting. The minutes of the meeting were previously posted to the
PSA website with some copies available at the entrance to the meeting. Hargis moved and Don
McIntyre seconded the motion to approve the minutes as printed. Motion carried.
Kidd announced the names of the Election Tellers: Gretchen Nagel, Chair; Kristen Byrne, Alamanda
Calvert, Lindsay Stevenson, and Olivia Faulkner.
Kidd invited Mike Wineland to give the Report of the Nominating Committee. Wineland thanked the
members of the committee and announced the slate of candidates. Wineland moved for acceptance of
the report and the motion was seconded by Brian Fairchild. Motion carried. The nominees selected

additional nominations from the floor. Pescatore moved and Jeff Buhr seconded the motion to close
nominations and declare Todd Applegate elected First Vice-President by acclamation. Motion
carried.
Kidd introduced Mike Hulet as the nominee for Secretary-Treasurer and asked if there were additional
nominations from the floor. Hargis moved and Tara York seconded the motion to close nominations
and declare Mike Hulet elected Secretary-Treasurer by acclamation. Motion carried.
Kidd introduced David Caldwell and Mark Cook as the nominees for Second Vice-President and asked if
there were additional nominations from the floor. Mamduh Sifri moved and Buhr seconded the motion
to close nominations. Motion carried. Election ballots were collected by the Tellers.
Kidd invited Mike Hulet to give the Report of the Secretary-Treasurer. Hulet referred the members to the
printed Treasurer’s Report and the 2013 Budget, both of which were available at the entrance to the
meeting room. The audit of the PSA Finances was conducted by May, Cocagne & King, P.C. (MCK), of
Decatur, Illinois. No significant deficiencies were identified. The auditor’s letter to the Board of Directors
will be posted on the PSA website. The PSA financial position as of December 31, 2012, consisted of
total assets of $3,830,278. Asset distribution was $359,012 Cash, $2,572,546 Investments, $781,199
FASS Equity, and $117,521 Other. Program Services Revenue amounted to $121,850. Poultry Science
subscriptions totaled $299,127, with subscriptions for The Journal of Applied Poultry Science at $63,774.
Total PSA Revenue and Support in 2012 was $1,602,502, compared to Expenses of $1,156,464. This left
an overall gain in PSA Activities of $446,038 for the year. The Investment Portfolio has increased from
$1,881,778 on June 30, 2011, to over $2,500,000 on December 31, 2012. Sifri inquired as to the safety
and security of the cash and investments. Steve Koenig explained that the PSA Executive Committee
approves changes to the PSA investment accounts, the same as the Foundation Board of Trustees and the
WPSA-USA Committee do with their investments. Both the President and the Executive Director have
signatory capabilities on the investment accounts. Checking and savings funds are held in FDIC-insured
accounts and balances are maintained under the insurance limit. Hulet moved and Bill Dudley-Cash
seconded the motion to approve the Report of the Secretary-Treasurer. Motion carried.
Kidd announced that David Caldwell had been elected the new Second Vice-President.
Kidd introduced Greg Engelke and Joe Hess as the nominees for Director #1 and asked if there were
additional nominations from the floor. Greg Martin moved and Jacquie Jacob seconded the motion to
close nominations. Motion carried. Election ballots were collected by the Tellers.
Kidd invited FASS President Tony Pescatore to give the PSA FASS Representatives Report. Pescatore
reported that FASS has been able to operate within their revised budget after the departure of ASAS as a
paying client. He noted that adjustments to the budget and changes to staffing presented challenges for the
FASS Staff, but he feels FASS has turned the corner and continues to be a stable organization. They have
brought on new clients are pursuing others. The Founding Societies each approved renewing the Science
Policy Program for another five years. FAIR2012 was completed and copies of the report available on the
FASS website. He reported that James Tyus, Tennessee State University, is completing his year as the
Congressional Science Fellow, and Chasity Cox, Virginia Tech, has been selected for 2013-2014. Cox
makes the third consecutive PSA student member selected for the position. Mike Lacy credited Pescatore
and John Carey, FASS Treasurer, for their work in light of the ASAS decision and for mediating a very
difficult situation. Lacy moved and Engelke seconded the motion to approve the Report of the PSA
FASS Representatives. Motion carried.
Kidd announced that Joe Hess had been elected as Director #1.

Kidd invited Tom Porter to give the Report of the Poultry Science Editor-in-Chief. He reported that
Poultry Science continues to grow. The number of submissions have more than doubled in the last seven
years and continues to increase. In addition, the number of submissions per month have increased by 50%
in the past three years, while the number of pages published have increased by more than 50% in the past
eight years. The acceptance rate has decreased to 47%, and the average time in review prior to final
decision has decreased to less than 30 days in the past three years. He reported that the 2-year Impact
Factor decreased slightly in 2012, but remained comparable to the previous seven years. The 5-year
Impact Factor is 2.066; ranking #7 out of 54 Animal, Dairy and Animal Science journals. Porter
thanked the FASS Staff, Section Editors, Associate Editors, and the ad hoc Reviewers. Paul Siegel and
Juliet Roberts are outgoing Section Editors. Henry Classen moved and Lacy seconded the motion to
approve the Report of the Poultry Science Editor-in-Chief. Motion carried.
Kidd introduced Sergio Fernandez and José Sorbara as the nominees for Director #2 and asked if there
were additional nominations from the floor. Saylor moved and Porter seconded the motion to close
nominations. Motion carried. Election ballots were collected by the Tellers.
Kidd invited Jesse Grimes to give the Report of The Journal of Applied Poultry Research Editor-in-Chief.
The number of manuscripts submitted increased slightly for 2012, while the number of articles and pages
published increased substantially in 2012 compared to 2011. The number of papers accepted for
publication increased from 86 to 99 from 2011 to 2012. However, the acceptance ratio has decreased from
64% to 61%. A large number of international manuscripts continue to be received. The average review
days has improved, although it is higher than for most years. The average total time in production per
paper has decreased and is only slightly higher than previous years. Most manuscripts are reviewed and
decided upon in less than 60 days. The single year and 5-year Impact Factors have increased from 2007.
Grimes thanked the Reviewers, Subject Editors and the FASS Staff for their work. The outgoing Subject
Editors were recognized: Mark Jackson, Jacquie Jacob, Ken Koelkebeck, and Doug Smith. McIntyre
moved and Mike Wineland seconded the motion to approve the Report of The Journal of Applied
Poultry Research Editor-in-Chief. Motion carried.
Kidd announced that Sergio Fernandez had been elected as Director #2.
Kidd reported that Janet Remus will be rotating off the Nominating Committee and opened the floor for
nominations to the Nominating Committee. Mike Lilburn nominated Greg Engelke; Tony Pescatore
nominated Jacquie Jacob; Henry Classen nominated Karen Schwean-Lardner; and Nick Zimmermann
nominated Brigit McCrea. Pescatore moved and Saylor seconded the motion to close nominations.
Motion carried. Election ballots were collected by the Tellers.
Kidd invited E. David Peebles to give the Report of the Resolutions Committee:
Resolution 1: Recognition of President: WHEREAS, President Michael T. Kidd, University of
Arkansas, of the Poultry Science Association has contributed excellent leadership to the
continuing success of the Association through his conscientious positive attitude, outreach to the
membership, diligent attention to the financial security of the Poultry Science Association, and
tireless efforts and service during this year (2012-2013), therefore, BE IT RESOLVED that the
membership of the Association extends its sincere gratitude to their colleague, Michael T.
Kidd.

Business Operations for the Poultry Science Association, Jon A. Cole, has contributed excellent
support to the success of the Association through his tireless efforts in membership services and
support to the office of Director of Business Operations and has exemplified the spirit of
professionalism and teamwork necessary to coordinate programming directives among other
societies within the Headquarters Complex. Others who have been key contributors to organizing

Kidd invited Mike Smith to give the Report of the Constitution Committee. Smith explained the proposals
being balloted upon, noting that they were published in the Spring Newsletter. The first proposal amends
the Constitution to allow for electronic balloting of the Board of Directors. The second proposal amends
the By-Laws and establishes terms for the PSA Foundation Board of Trustees. Koenig shared a letter
from Ed Buss, who could not attend, but urged the membership to approve the change to electronic
voting. Ballots were collected by the Tellers.
President Kidd relinquished control of the meeting to First Vice-President Mike Smith. Smith invited
Kidd to give the Report of the Board of Directors.
Kidd thanked the attendees for their support and reported that as of the end of day yesterday, a total of
926 people had registered for the meeting; a much larger group than anticipated. Kidd noted that over
25% of the attendees are from outside the U.S. and Canada, and that the Board is working to build a
strong relationship with Latin American colleagues. He noted that the Board of Directors is committed to
continuing the trend of a number of strong symposia at the meeting, as well as seeking industry guidance
on possible collaborations for future symposia. The changes for this meeting have proven to be positive
so far and Kidd encouraged the membership to continue to provide suggestions and ideas to improve the
meeting for the benefit of the members. Kidd concluded his report by thanking the members for their
support throughout the year, and Koenig and Cole for their work. Wineland moved and Buhr seconded
the motion to approve the Report of the Board of Directors. Motion carried.
First Vice-President Smith returned control of the meeting back to President Kidd.
Kidd invited Bill Saylor to give the Report of the PSA Foundation. Saylor reported that Novus
International has made a $100,000 donation to the Foundation in honor of Drew Giesen to establish the
Andrew F. Giesen III Memorial Graduate Fellowship. Novus has also solicited donations to the fund from
employees and colleagues. The silent auction is set up across from the registration area. Retiring Trustees
Sarge Bilgili, Paul Patterson, and Tara York were presented plaques in recognition of their service on the
Foundation Board. Saylor moved and Jacob seconded the motion to approve the Report of the PSA
Foundation. Motion carried.
Kidd invited James Tyus, Congressional Science Fellow, to report on his activities in Washington, DC.
Tyus reported that he had an opportunity to work briefly on the Farm Bill, and noted that his time in
Washington has been a unique experience. He thanked PSA for their support of the program and
encouraged the membership to continue to provide funding. Hess moved and Buhr seconded the
motion to approve the Report of the Congressional Science Fellow. Motion carried.
Kidd invited Gretchen Nagel to give the PSA Hatchery Report. Nagel reported that the Hatchery has
gained 156 new members since last year’s Annual Meeting. She pointed out that there are 141 total
student presentations at this meeting. She thanked the Board for the $5,000 budget to support activities,
including a student mixer at IPE. The Hatchery is working to develop a new mentorship program between
professional members and student members which will begin at next year’s meeting. Don Conner moved
and Porter seconded the motion to approve the PSA Hatchery Report. Motion carried.
Kidd noted that, in the interest of time, the report of the Strategic Plan Evaluation Committee will be
posted online for the members to review.
Kidd reported that the proposal to the Constitution allowing for electronic voting, as well as the proposal
to the By-Laws establishing terms for the Foundation Trustees, both passed by the required margin.

Kidd invited Birger Svihus, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, to extend an invitation to the PSA
membership to attend the European Poultry Conference in Stavanger, Norway, June 23-27, 2014.
President Kidd recognized Jeff Buhr for organizing the scientific program and presented him with a
plaque in appreciation of his work. Kidd invited the retiring Board of Directors to come forward to
receive their recognition plaques. Plaques were presented to Bob Buresh, Tara York, and Gretchen Nagel.
Mike Wineland was also recognized for his term as Past-President.
Kidd invited Mike Smith to the podium and proceeded to “Pass the Gavel” to the newly elected PSA
President. Smith presented Kidd with an engraved Presidential gavel and plaque and thanked him for his
service to PSA.
There being no further business, it was moved by Hargis and seconded by Sifri to adjourn the
meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:24 am.
