Assignment 1 – Create a single page
Create a New Document
In this first assignment, you will create a page and
add text and a picture. In other words – the basics of
editing.
Try to get the page to look as similar to the original as possible. You have all instructions about typefaces, sizes and measurements and a picture of the
page on page 3.
• Choose File -> New -> Document. You can also
press Command+N.
• In the Page area, choose an option from the Size
menu. You can also enter the values in the Width and Height
fields, 210 mm and 297 mm. To quickly reverse the
page size from landscape to portrait or back, click the
Orientation buttons.
• If you want multiple columns on most of your
document pages, you can have Indesign create guides to
indicate the columns for you.
Enter a value in the Columns field to indicate how
many columns you want.
To specify the amount of space between columns,
enter a value in the Gutter Width field. These values are
limited only by the page width.
• Margin Guides are blue lines that indicate the
general work space on each page. You can specify
Top and Bottom margins and Left and Right margins in all documents. Type the given values in the
fields.
• This publication will be on one page, so make sure
that the box “Facing Pages” is unchecked.
• Click the OK button to create the new document.
It will contain one page and look like this.
Document with three columns.

Save your document
With a new document open, choose File -> Save or
File-> Save As. You can also press Command+option+S
.
• Navigate to a location for the file. Save your document on the Desktop while working on it.
• Type a descriptive name consisting of up to 32 characters in the Save current document as field.
• Quickly confirm the name, location, and version of
the file, then click the Save button or press Return. The
saved document remains open on-screen so you can
continue working on it.
• Remember to save your document often while working with it. Press Option+S.
Create text boxes –
Basic layout
Now that you have your new document, you can add
the text and a picture. Start by creating all the boxes
you will need on the page, like in the picture.
This layout will make it easier to edit the page after you
have imported the text and the picture.
Box for headline
• Move the pointer over the Text tool and single-click
the mouse button.
Box for opening paragraph
• Click anywhere on the page, then drag down and to
the right. Release the mouse button to create the text
box.
Picture box
Box for caption
• Since the box is still selected, small black boxes called
handles display at the sides and corners. Move the pointer tool over one of the handles to display the Resize
pointer. Pull on a side or corner of the box to resize it.
Box for body text
• Move the pointer over the Selection tool and singleclick the mouse button. Click on the text box and drag
it in any direction to move it.

Create a picture box
To create a picture box, the procedure is quite similar
to creating a text box. Choose the Picture box tool in
the Tools palette. Click on the page where you want
the box, then drag down and to the right. Release the
mouse button to create the box.
Divide a text box
in columns
The Body Copy should be divided into three columns.
Select the box that contains the Body Copy.
In the measurement palette, you will find “Columns”.
Type 3 and press “Return” and the selected box will
be divided into three columns. You can also do this in a
palette Alternative for textframes (cmd + B).
You can change columns in the
measurements palette.
Get text –
Connect to the server
You can type inside the selected text box as you would
type in a word processor.
For this assignment, you will find the text and the
picture on our server. To open a server connection and
get the text, you do the following:
• You have to log on to the server, use the same login
name and password as you used to log on to the
computer.
• In the next window you can choose which connection you want to use, in this case, highlight the alternative “Övningar” (which is swedish for “Assignments”)
and click OK. The symbol for the server connection will
appear on your desktop.
• You now have an open connection to the server, and
you can get all the text and pictures to place in Indesign.
• Choose to open Exchange > Practise Indesign/Quark
and Assignment 1 (or 2).
... in the window you can choose which connection you want to use, in this case, highlight the
alternative “Övningar” (which is swedish for
“Assignments”) and click OK. The symbol for the
server connection will appear on your desktop.

To import a text file you must select the Text tool. Click
on the text box to select it. Choose File -> Place. You
can also press Command+D.
• In the Get Text dialog box, you can navigate to a
word processing file and select it.
Now that you have the server connection open, you
can choose Desktop -> Övningar -> Redigering A4
-> Exchange students -> Assignment1 -> madam.txt.
Highlight the text-file name, and click OK. The text will
appear in your textbox.
Too much text
in a box?
When you import a text into your document, you
often get a symbol in the lower right corner of the text
box. This indicates that the text box contains more text,
but not all of the text can be shown. You can temporarily make the textbox larger if you want to get an idea
of how much text you’re dealing with. The text will fit as
you change font and size on the text.
The little red kross shows that you have too much text in the box.
Cut, Copy and Paste
• The text file you imported contains all the text and
the Body Copy, headline and the caption are now all
in the same box. To move parts of the text to it’s own
text box, you can cut and paste.
• In the beginning of the text, you have the headline.
Highlight the headline, and choose Edit -> Cut or press
Command + X. When you cut text or an item, it is stored on the clipboard until you cut or copy something
else or you turn off your computer.
• Paste – Click in the box you made for the headline
and then choose Edit -> Paste or press Command +
V. When you paste an item, the copied item continues
to be stored on the clipboard until you cut or copy
something else or you turn off your computer.
• Remember that if text is highlighted when you begin
typing or when you import text, that text is replaced.

6
Change fonts
When you have imported your text file, the typeface
will be Courier. To change this into the typefaces that
are specified for this assignment, highlight the text that
you want to change.
• Since you have put the text in separate boxes you
can select the box and choose Edit -> Select All to
highlight all. In the Measurement palette you can now
choose the typeface you want for your text.
Change fonts: Highlight the text and choose the font you want
in the Measurements palette.
• By pressing the menu button on the right of the
typeface name, you will get a list of the fonts installed
on your computer.
Add a picture to your
document
To import a picture to your document, you select the
picture box and choose File -> Get Picture. You will
find the picture in the same folder as the text you
imported, Desktop -> Övningar -> Exchange students
-> Indesign/Quark -> madampic.tif. Browse the picture
and click “Open”.
Resize a picture
If your picture does not fit in the picture box, you can
adjust this by pressing Shift – Option – Command and
“E”. This will fit your picture proportionally into the box.
To enlarge or reduce the picture, you can use the
Measurements palette and change the picture size in
percent. Make sure you change the picture proportionally!
Resize the picture in the Measurements palette.

Format Paragraphs
Paragraph Attributes include indents, leading, space
between paragraphs, alignment, hyphenation, and keep
together options. All these controls are available in the
Formats tab of the Paragraph Attributes dialog box. The
most commonly used controls – alignment and leading
– are also available in the Measurements palette.
To apply Paragraph Attributes, select the Selection tool,
then click in a paragraph to select it or highlight a range
of paragraphs to select them all.
• Move the mouse over the Text tool and single-click
to select it. You must select the Text tool to format text.
Click in a text box containing text, then either click in a
paragraph or click and drag to highlight several paragraphs.
• Choose Style -> Formats to open the Formats tab of
the Paragraph Attributes dialog box.
Indent
To indent a paragraph from the left margin, type a value
in the Left Indent field. To indent a paragraph from the
right margin, type a value in the Right Indent field.
You can change the indents in the measurements palette.
To indent only the first line of a paragraph, type a value
in the First Line field; in professional publishing, use this
method in place of a tab to offset paragraphs.
Leading
Leading controls the amount of space between lines
in paragraphs; leading is measured from baseline to
baseline (from the bottom of a line to the bottom of
the line above it).
The default, Auto, places 20% of the font size between
lines. You can type a specific value, such as 14 points, in
the Leading field.
Since leading is a significant factor in readability, leading
is usually adjusted in relation to point size and column
width, with larger text in wider columns requiring more
space between lines. Leading – space between lines.
KG • MKV • 2010
You can change the leading in the measurements palette.
8
Space Before and
Space After
The Space Before and Space After fields control the
amount of space between paragraphs.
For example, when you have subheadings in a text,
rather than using the Return-key to add a blank row,
use space before and after.
Since the subheading is supposed to be placed closer
to the following text and not “hang” between two passages, it’s easier to adjust by placing an amount of points
before and after. How many points you should use
depends on the linespacing.
You can change space before and space after
in the measurements palette.
Type values in the fields to specify a space before and
after paragraphs. 2 pt
Alignment
To specify how the text aligns with the left and right
margins, choose an option from the Alignment menu:
Left, Centered, Right, Justified, or Forced. (The difference
between Justified and Forced is that Forced always
justifies the last line of a paragraph.)
You can change the alignment in the
measurements palette.

Assignment 2 – Facing pages
Facing pages
Your next project will be to work with a spread – facing
pages. When you create your new document, choose
File -> New Document to start a new docu- ment. In
the New Document dialog box, check Facing Pages.
Specify whatever page, column, and margin dimensions
you want, then click OK.
If you checked Facing Pages, you can specify different
Inside margins (space from the binding) and Outside
margins (space from the edge of the page).
If you create an automatic text box (a container for
text), it will also contain the number of columns you
specify.
Facing pages (uppslag in swedish)
Master pages –
Automatic page numbers
The ability to base document pages on master pages is
one of Indesigns most powerful features. One key component of most master pages is a text box that contains
the automatic page number character.
Page numbers are important navigational aids in multipage documents. They’re generally placed near the
outside margin, either at the top or bottom of a page,
so that readers can easily see them as they flip through
pages.
• Choose View -> Show Document Layout to display
the Document Layout palette.
Master pages (mallsida in swedish)
• Double-click the A-Master A master page icon to display this master page. You may want to choose View ->
Fit in Window to completely display both the left-hand
and right-hand pages.
• Use the Rectangle Text Box tool to create two text
boxes: one in the lower-left corner of the left-hand
page component of A-Master A and one in the lowerright corner of the right-hand page of A- Master A.
You create automatic page numbers in the master pages.
• If it’s not selected, choose the Content tool. Click on
one of the text boxes you just created. You may want
to zoom in to perform this task. Choose Text -> Insert
Special caracter -> Marks and Automatic Page number.

Enter the same character in the other text box.
Use the Style menu to format the symbol the way you
want your page numbers to appear across document
pages.
• Double-click on one of the document page icons in
the Document Layout palette to display the page. The
correct page number is displayed in the text box you
placed on A-Master A.
• Important: When you import text and pictures and
do your layout, you shall work on pages 2 and 3, and
noton the Master page.
Style Sheets
Why Style Sheets?
Once you’ve gone through the Style sheets a few times
to format text the way you want it, you’ll start to find
the process a little tedious. If you’re using the same
formatting over and over, you can save the attributes as
a style sheet, then apply it to highlighted text with one
click.
The Style Sheets gives you the opportunities to add
linespacing, indent, space before and after, and adjustment. Style sheets are a must in long documents with
repetitive formatting.
• Choose Style Sheets to open a dialog box that lists all
the style sheets created for the active document.
• Choose New -> Style Sheet. Click the ”New”-button
to display a menu. The Edit Style Sheet dialog box
opens containing controls for setting up the style sheet,
specifying paragraph attributes, and specifying character
attributes.
Stylesheets (styckeformat in swedish)
• Name the Style Sheet: Type a descriptive name in the
“Name”-field. Start with the style sheet for the Body
copy, and name it ”Body Copy character”. Add a Keyboard Equivalent if you want one.
• Confirm Formatting: Choose the settings for your
text, the Font, the size and the color. Now you can add
linespacing, indent, space before and after, and adjustment.
• Save the Style sheet: When you’re finished creating
the style sheet, click OK to return to the Style Sheets
dialog box. To save the style sheet with the document,
click Save.

Apply a Style Sheet
Indesign provides a Style Sheets palette that lets you
apply paragraph style sheets and character style sheets
with a click of the mouse.
• Choose Edit -> Style Sheets. In the list at the top of
the dialog box, scroll to the style sheet you want to
modify. Click to select that style sheet, then click Edit.
The Style Sheets palette lists all the style sheets saved
with the document, and it displays each style’s keyboard
shortcut as a reminder.
• If you’re editing a paragraph style sheet, click the
Formats, Tabs, and Rules tabs, then change any of those
settings. To change the character formatting, click the
Edit button in the Character Attributes area, change any
of the settings, then click OK. You can also edit the style
sheet name and short- cut. When you’re finished, click
OK to go back to the Style Sheets dialog box.
When you select text, the palette also shows which
style sheets are applied to the text. If there’s a plus (+)
sign next to a style sheet, it indicates that formatting in
the selected text is different from the style sheet.
• If you’re editing a character style sheet, change any of
the settings. While you’re editing a style sheet, you can
change its name and shortcut. You can edit the style
sheet name and shortcut as well. When you’re finished,
click OK to go back to the Style Sheets dialog box.
• Using the Content tool, highlight several words within
a paragraph. Choose View -> Show Style Sheets to
open the Style Sheets palette.
• Using the Content tool, click in a paragraph to select
it. You can also select multiple paragraphs by highlighting
any portion of them. To select all the text in a box or
story, click the mouse five times, choose Edit -> Select
All, or press Command+A.
• When you’re finished editing style sheets, click OK to
save your changes with the Style Sheets dialog box.
• Click on a paragraph style sheet to apply it to highlighted text. If a keyboard command displays next to the
paragraph style sheet, you can also press it to apply the
style sheet.
• When you apply a style sheet, text may not change
entirely because Indesign retains any formatting already
applied. In this case, you’ll see a + sign next to the style
sheet name. (The + sign also displays if you change
formatting after applying a style sheet.) To format text
precisely as the style sheet specifies, press Option while
you click the style sheet. Reapplying a paragraph style
sheet in this manner removes all character style sheets
applied within the paragraph.
Modify a Style Sheet
An advantage of formatting text with style sheets is that
you can change all the formatting by simply changing
the style sheet.
For example, if all the body text in the document is in
Minion, but you want it to be in Times, you can edit the
style sheets used to format the body text. When you
edit a style sheet, Indesign automatically reformats text
to which that style sheet is applied.
