Cell Parts Analogy Project
Introduction: An analogy is a comparison between two things that are similar. You will come up with an
analogy for a cell and its parts. Some groups have compared a cell to fast food restaurants like Taco Bell,
some to cities and one even to an airport. You can use any analogy you want but you need to find a way
to compare each part of the cell to a part of whatever you are using as an analogy. One example would be
that the walls of a Taco Bell are a lot like cell walls because they provide support and structure, while the
doors and windows are like the cell membrane because they control who and what can move in and out
of the Taco Bell just like the membrane of a cell controls what can come in and out of the cell.
Your first job is to name your analogy (Taco Bell, city, school, human body, Hershey park, stadium, etc.)
and describe what in your analogy is like each of the cell parts listed below and compare their functions.
You must pick 9 out the 12 below!! Use your foldable to help you with the functions if you can’t
remember.
The cell is like a(n):
Cell Part
1. Cell membrane
2. Cell wall
3. Chromosome
4. Cytoplasm
5. Endoplasmic
reticulum
6. Golgi body
7. Lysosome
8. Mitochondria
9. Nucleus
10. Ribosomes
11. Vacuole
12. Chloroplast
Analogous Part
Reason for Analogy (why are they similar in function?)
EX: The cell membrane and the ______________ both allow
things/people to enter/exit the cell and __________________
Part 2: Draw the Cell and Your Analogy
Make sure you read over all of these instructions BEFORE starting on your drawings.
1. You and your partner will be given a white piece of 11x18 construction paper on which to make a
drawing of a cell and your analogy topic. Your drawing must take up the entire paper, be hand
drawn, and it must be colored with colored pencils only!! (it is OK to draw lightly in pencil first if
you like).
2. Divide the 11x18 piece of construction paper in half. On one half you will draw a picture of a cell
(see example below).
a. The cell drawing must include all 11 cell parts/organelles listed in Part 1. Because some of the
cell parts on the list are only found in plant cells or animal cells you will be drawing a general
cell, not specifically a plant or animal cell.
b. You need to label the parts of the cell on your drawing. Make sure labels are neat, accurate
and easy to read.
3. On the other half of the construction paper you will draw a picture of your analogy.
a. The analogy drawing must include all 9 analogies you came up with for the 9 cell
parts/organelles listed in Part 1.
b. You need to label the parts of the analogy on your drawing. Make sure labels are neat,
accurate and easy to read.
4. In the middle of the construction paper you will create a key to go with your two drawings. In
the key you will show what in the analogy drawing represents each cell part/organelle (see
example below).
