The Tides March 2010 Issue # 6/3 of Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church ( Events & activities of our church family FROM THE PASTOR’S GARDEN Are we ready for spring? We had a real winter this year, one that reminded many of us of the winters we grew up in up north. Well, not quite that cold, and not that much snow, but it was a winter here in Texas that has us really ready for spring. Growing up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. I lived through many long cold winters like they had this year. I remember my dad telling us five kids when it was time to take down the storm windows and put up the screens. Our home was a big old two story house with about one thousand windows. It was an all family job for a whole Saturday every spring. And we did it again in the fall. Moving from season to season involves real change for many people around the world. Our church is also changing seasons this year. Just as we are ready to welcome a fresh new spring, we are getting ready to welcome a fresh new pastor. It isn’t an annual occurrence but it is a change from the old to the new. Winter is sometimes called, “old man winter” and that fits me as I near 72. Spring brings new life and that is good for gardens and churches too. Maybe pastors are a little like windows. They let in the light, connect the inside to the outside, keep out hard weather and let in fresh breezes. Windows needed changing from one season to another but the house is the same from season to season. Actually, the house of the Lord has much that is the same, but it should also grow. Yes it should have the security of a well built house but it is also a living body that is meant to grow into maturity. I know you are ready to welcome spring with open arms and I encourage you to warmly welcome your new pastor and a new season for your church this month. This spring of 2010 will be a great time to remember that it is Christ who is the head of His Church, and this church ! Sincerely, 6035 South Fry Road Katy, TX 77450 Our Worship What is Maundy Thursday? Maundy Thursday, also known as ―Holy Thursday‖ is one day before Good Friday (the Thursday before Easter). Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper. Two important events are the focus of Maundy Thursday. First, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples and thereby instituted the Lord’s Supper, also called Communion (Luke 22:19-20). Some Christian churches observe a special Communion service on Maundy Thursday in memory of Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples. Second, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service, thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one another in humility (John 13:3-17). Some Christian churches observe a foot-washing ceremony on Maundy Thursday to commemorate Jesus’ washing the feet of the disciples. The word ―Maundy‖ is derived from the Latin word for ―command.‖ The ―Maundy‖ in Maundy Thursday refers to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another. The Bible neither commands nor forbids the observance of Maundy Thursday. It is a good thing to remember the Last Supper and Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. It is a good thing to remember the Lord’s example of humility. HOMEBOUND COMMUNION If you are unable to attend worship on the first Sunday of the month and receive communion due to illness or other hardships, please contact the church office and allow us to bring communion to you. Through prayerful consideration by the committee and the nominee, all involved in the search know that this is the right choice for our church. They hope that the entire congregation will be as excited to embrace the nominee as our new pastor and welcome him/her and their family into our church as we have so many others. WANDERERS CLASS SERVICE PROJECT How many times have you passed an intersection and seen someone in need on the corner asking for a handout? Or been walking down the street and seen someone sitting destitute on the curb, or asleep in an alley? You want to help, but what do you do? The Wanderers Class, realizing we are God’s hands and feet here on earth, decided to put our faith into practice. Organized by our class Service Leadership Team—Sue Merrick, Stephanie Hruzek, and Theresa Wilson, we assembled 24 bags for the needy or homeless. Toyota, Ford , and GM could learn a thing or two from our assembly line technique! Thanks especially to Sue for all the shopping and organization. The bags included nonperishable food items, bottled water, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, socks and other necessary items a person on the street might need. These will be carried in our vehicles to be handed out next time we encounter one of God’s less fortunate children. Also realizing we are called to be joyful when we are about the Lord’s work, we have had several fellowship events, the latest being our Super Bowl party. Organized by our Cruise Director Julie (Chief Fun Officer [CFO] Sue Roe) we had a great time at the Alexan Apartments courtesy of John Gould. Tom Wilson was the big winner of the evening, with the Saints winning the game and having a surprise birthday cake delivered by Theresa! Our next gathering will be a St. Patrick’s Day party. We encourage all the other classes and groups of GLPC to start their own service projects and fellowship events, to grow as God’s family and have a good time doing it! 6 Issue # 6/3 Session News SESSION MEMBERS NAME Carol Bahret Betsy Drinkard Carol Greene Chris Loeffler Dixie McCary Lyn Miller Bob Myers Jean Ann Naumann Tom Roe David Shafer Susan Sweeney Jay Swoboda Jim Thompson` Dick Westfahl ` Dave Young COMMITTEE CHAIR Personnel Administration Congregational Care New Members Children’s Ministry Worship Mission Student Ministry Christian Growth Property Clerk of Session Evangelism Finance Facilities Planning & Research E-MAIL [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] (Left to right) Front Row– Carol Bahret, Dixie McCary, Susan Sweeney, Jean Ann Naumann, Lyn Miller, Carol Greene Second Row—Tom Roe, Rev.
