AS 91103 – L2 Workbook Create a crafted and controlled visual and verbal text (4 credits) Student (full name): What do I have to do? 1. Create several static images that contain developed and sustained ideas. 2. Draw inspiration from either a theme or text(s) studied in class this year. How do I know if I’ve been successful or not? • I have completed at least three static images that complement each other (i.e. developed ideas in a triptych). How do I DEVELOP ideas in static images? STEP 1: Start with ONE main theme e.g. the horrors of war. Select some quotes that show a progression of ideas; for example: Main Theme - Sense of Loss because of War 1. “What passing bells for those who die as cattle?” Create an image to show the idea of inhumane slaughter of soldiers and/or someone paying their respects. 2. “Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes shall shine the holy gimmer of goodbyes”. Create an image to show the idea sad loss of friends. 3. “And each slow dusk a drawing down of blinds”. Create an image to show the idea of a sense of loss for family at home. STEP 2: think about SYMBOLS that can represent your progression of ideas; for example: 1. Church bells, cattle skulls, conveyor belt, grieving soldier, bloody knives… 2. Tears, pic of soldiers reflected in eye… 3. Stages of blinds being drawn, skull behind the blinds. STEP 3: introduce at least one MOTIF i.e. a recurring symbol that links all three images together; for example: sand (in the desert and in an hourglass) and skulls. EXEMPLAR #1 EXEMPLAR #2 As you work away on your static images, you’ll find that you constantly have to solve problems. One problem here was getting the idea of pain in the second image. The student added flames, but that wasn’t enough. She then added a head of someone screaming in pain, twisted it around, and then copy-pasted it. This worked well because it moved away from a literal interpretation of the quote to more of a SYMBOLIC or SURREAL interpretation. The second major problem was arranging the layout of the three images in the triptych to fit on one page (there was too much white space). Then there was the problem of linking all the images together to show a progression of ideas. This student solved the first problem by adding a huge scared-looking eye for a background. She then ingeniously made up a phrase for the background image that also happened to link up each panel of the triptych. Now it’s your turn! Plan your static image on this page, then Photoshop to make your images. What is the name of your text? What is the main theme of you text? What are your three quotes that show a progression of ideas? Quote 1: What type of image are you going to create? What ideas will it show? What SYMBOLS are you going to use to represent these ideas? Quote 2: What type of image are you going to create? What ideas will it show? What SYMBOLS are you going to use to represent these ideas? Quote 3: What type of image are you going to create? What ideas will it show? What SYMBOLS are you going to use to represent these ideas? What Motif(s) will you use? What will you put in the background to bind all three images together? Use this space to plan you static images. MEMO: all three images have to fit on one page.
