Removal of the plant and installation of the replacement plant are included in the guarantee if we planted the tree (for the same-size tree). WE WANT YOU TO SUCCEED AND BE SATISFIED WITH OUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES. Thanks! 8 Our bulk materials are sold by the “cubic yard.” Here’s how to determine how much you need to order. Start by measuring in feet: LENGTH x WIDTH = AREA DIVIDE that by 27 This gives you the amount of material to cover the area 12” deep. DIVIDE THIS NUMBER to get to the thickness you want. Example: 540 square feet of garden space works out to 5 yards at 3” deep. (540 divided by 27 equals 20; divide by 4; equals 5). One yard covers 80 sq ft 4” deep or 100 sq ft 3” deep. You’ll need at least 3”-4” deep for bark to keep the plants protected and to keep the weeds away. You’ll need at least 2” deep of topsoil Topsoil (for lawns) and Compost and Planting Mix (for gardens) You can plant in topsoil or planting mix; compost is for mixing into existing soil. If you have an open-bed pickup truck or trailer (or friend with one that owes you a favor) we can load our materials into your truck or trailer. SUVs are not trucks. Sorry, we can’t do our bulk materials by bushel or bags. Other pre-bagged materials are available too. ***When you spread the bark, don’t let the bark touch the woody stems or tree trunks*** HARDWOOD $42/yd 3-5 yards delivered $40/yd 6+ yards delivered up $36/yd picked up CEDAR $43/yd 6+ yards delivered $45/yd 3-5 yards delivered $39/yd picked up TOPSOIL and PLANTING MIX $35/yard delivered $29/yd picked COMPOST $37/yd delivered $31/yd picked up PINE $50/yd 3-5 yards delivered $48/yd 6+ yards delivered $44/yd picked up 9 “Where are all your cats?” Is a common question of many customers (and especially kids) when they stop in. Usually you’ll find our cats somewhere in the greenhouse—in baskets on the counter, sauntering through like they own the place...or looking for food! Currently, we have two cats. COSMO is a big furry gray cat with huge eyes, furry paws, even on the bottom (so he’s rarely on the counter as he slides off easily) and a lovely attitude, especially when there are kids and straw bales involved. GRACIE is a sweet quick little tiger girl (Cosmo’s sister) who can be wild and independent or a total affection junkie, depending on her mood that day. She’s our resident counter cat, has a great purr, and appreciates any and all attention. The cats will be 9 years old this year. The cats would like to remind everyone to remember your pets (especially dogs, as the cats believe they are perfect) when you landscape (“It’s My Yard Too!”) and leave room for digging, places to explore, shrubs and trees for shade, and which plants can handle dog full-body contact (dwarf lilacs) and which could break during enthusiastic ball-chasing (laceleaf Japanese maples), so consider the canine traffic patterns and plant accordingly. The cats reminded me that catnip is expected, and appreciated, as are trees to climb and bird-attracting plants (just for watching, of course!) Your friendly, well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome here—please let us know before you take them out of the car and they must be on-leash at all times and you are responsible for any clean-up…we’ll loan you a shovel! To all our cherished nursery animals, including lots of dear kitties, a flock of ducks from the Flower Show, and of course Concolor, Phoenix, and Holly; Tulip, Thyme and Violet; we wish you all sweet rest at the Rainbow Bridge. 10 “Where do your trees come from?” is a question lots of customers ask...and if they’re looking at our shade trees or ornamental trees, the answer is usually “At our tree farm in Parma, Michigan.” (the next question is “Where is Parma?”) Our tree farm in Parma, just west of Jackson off I-94 is 56-acres of shade and ornamental trees. We bought the tree farm in 2003, and trees have been grown on this farm since the 1960s. By allowing our trees to “spend their formative years in Michigan” our trees are well-adjusted to Michigan weather and Michigan soil. Our Parma tree farm is wholesale-only, and not open to our retail customers. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Trees always grow better when planted in similar soils and climate conditions. Michigan-grown trees have shorter commutes than other trees! Spend your Michigan-earned dollars on locally grown trees. Many of our trees and shrubs have spent their whole lives in Michigan! ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM! Michigan STATE grown trees and shrubs! 13 GROUND OUT STUMPS do not equal “ready to plant” areas! We can’t plant over a stump. My guys are incredible, but not super-human… WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? There are LOTS of roots that remain after a tree stump has been ground out, and as those roots decompose, they release a methane gas...and new tree roots HATE methane gas, to the point it can kill your new tree. HOW CLOSE CAN YOU PLANT? Depending on the size of the stump removed, your new tree will need to be at least 8ft to 10ft away from the stump. WHAT IF THAT’S THE ONLY PLACE? So please know that we all understand the concept of “the perfect place for a tree” and the situations of small yards and fewer places to plant...really we do! So PLEASE TELL US! if there is a stump involved—even from a year ago or more. Again, my superhero planting guys can’t plant over stumps, can’t remove them, and have to bring the tree back until the stump is removed...and this frustrates you, frustrates them, and slows down everything! AND WHILE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT OF PLANTING TREES… Please know the more flexible you can be with when we plant, the faster your tree can be planted. Average time is at least one week, and can be up to three weeks during peak times. Bad weather changes planting schedules too. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PLANT A TREE? Will that 2" ginkgo tree fit in my minivan? How about that 5ft spruce in my SUV? What about the 6ft Japanese Maple? Can it go on TOP of my car like my Local delivery charges range from $50 to $120, based on the largest tree purchased. The delivery charge is a single charge. Christmas tree did? Nope. Our rule is “if it takes a MACHINE to Planting charges are $40 per caliper inch for single-stem trees; $10 per foot for multi-stem trees and evergreens. lift it, it takes an open-bed PICK-UP or TRAILER to take it away.” Root balls are heavy! Check these approximate weights… 2” caliper tree 350+ lbs 2.5” caliper tree 450+ lbs 3” caliper tree 700+ lbs 5ft evergreen 300+ lbs We can just deliver, which is placing the tree in your driveway. We can also deliver and take it to the hole you have dug, for an extra $20 per tree. ANYTHING ELSE? State law requires that WE call MissDig for underground utility marking. This takes 3-5 business days. We are not responsible for irrigation system damage; however, irrigation insurance is $10 per tree. Please mark the tree planting spot with our flag as soon as possible after purchasing, let us know if there are gates, low hanging wires, narrow driveways, wild dogs in the backyard, alligators in the pond, or anything else that might make planting more challenging. WE WILL CALL YOU TO CONFIRM THE DAY BEFORE WE COME TO PLANT. 14 EVERGREENS Arborvitae ........... thuga Cypress .................. chamaecyparis Hemlock ............... tsuga Juniper .................. juniperus Pine ....................... pinus Spruce ................... picea SHRUBS Arborvitae ............ thuga Barberry................ berbis Bayberry ............... myrica Boxwood ............... buxus Buckthorn............. rhamnus Burning bush ....... euonymus Butterfly bush ...... buddleia Cotoneaster .......... cotoneaster Cypress................... chamaecyparis Deutzia.................. deutzia Dogwood .............. cornus Elderberry ............. sambucus Forsythia ............... forsythia Fothergilla ............ fothergilla Hemlock ............... tsuga Heptacodium ...... seven son flower Holly ....................... ilex Hydrangea ........... hydrangea Juniper ................... juniperus Kerria ..................... kerria Leptodermis ......... leptodermis Lilac ........................ syringe Mockorange ......... philadelphus Ninebark .............. physocarpus Pieris....................... pieris Potentilla .............. potentilla Rose ........................ rosa Rose of Sharon .... hibiscus Smokebush........... cotinus Spirea..................... spiraea St johns wort ........ hypericum Sumac.................... rhus Summersweet...... clethra Sweetspire ............ itea Viburnum ............. viburnum Willow .................... salix Witchhazel ........... hamamelis Yew ........................ taxus Weigela ................. weigela TREES Bald Cypress ........ taxodium Beech .................... fagus Birch ...................... betula Blackgum ............ nyssa Cherry ................... prunus Coffeetree ............ gymnocladus Crabapple............ malus Dogwood ............. cornus Elm ......................... ulmus Ginkgo .................. ginkgo Hackberry ............ celtis Hawthorn ............ crataegus Honeylocust ......... gleditsia Hornbeam ........... carpinus Horsechestnut ..... aesculus Katsura ................. cercidiphyllus Lilac ....................... syringe Linden ................... tilia Maple .................... acer Ninebark .............. physocarpus Oak........................ quercus Pear ....................... pyrus Redbud ................. cercis Redwood .............. metasequoia Rose of Sharon .... hibiscus Serviceberry......... amelanchier Smokebush .......... cotinus Sweetgum ............ liquidambar Sycamore ............. platanus Tulip tree .............. liriodendron Willow ................... salix Witchhazel ........... hamamelis Yellowwood ......... cladastrus Zelkova................. zelkova 15 Aesculus x carnea ‘Fort McNair’ FT MCNAIR RED HORSECHESTNUT Acer fremanii ‘Autumn Blaze’ AUTUMN BLAZE MAPLE rapid growing pyramidal deciduous tree; height 40ft to 60ft; spread 15ft to 25ft; likes sun; good fall colors; widely used as street and yard tree. $150/caliper inch sizes available: medium growing rounded deciduous tree; height 30ft to 40ft; spread 30ft to 40ft; likes sun; pink/yellow flowers in spring. Think of them as the “official” name, and the common name as more of a “nickname.” There are many nicknames, but only one official name. Happily, our perennials are grouped by color, rather than by name at the nursery! So don’t fear the botanical names! Divide the names into 2 and 3-letter groups, and give pronunciation a try! PT SUN X SHADE -- Everything is growing, but there’s no where to grow, so their roots start spiraling around in circles. This is known as “root bound” or “root lock.” The only way to correct this is to rip and tear the roots before you plant the plant, which shocks the plant (understandably), and causes unhappy plants. Veronica 'Pink Bomb' Pink Bomb Speedwell Color: densely pink Blooms: summer Height: 12"-15" SUN 1 gal $ 10 2 gal $ X PT SUN X SHADE -- Veronica 'Royal Candles' Royal Candles Speedwell Color: violet blue Blooms: summer Height: 15"-18" 1 gal $ 10 2 gal $ SUN About three years ago, we started using a spray on the inside of our pots, called MicroKote. It’s a blend of iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc and calcium, which are all nutrients plants need for growth and development. X PT SUN X SHADE -- Veronica spicata 'Red Fox' Red Fox Speedwell Color: pink-red Blooms: summer Height: 12"-15" 1 gal $ 10 2 gal $ SUN The plants develop a fibrous root structure, they don’t let their roots circle around; the roots grow toward the edges of the plant (where the nutrients are—smart roots!) and are healthier overall. X PT SUN X SHADE -- Vinca minor 'bowles' Groundcover Myrtle Please bring our pots back so we can recycle and reuse them! Color: periwinkle blooms; evergreen Blooms: early summer Height: 4” SUN 1 gal $ 10 2 gal $ However, we only want our own pots back. This helps with standardization and streamlining of our potting, helps with storage, etc. PT SUN X SHADE X Check with schools and garden clubs to donate other pots. Thanks! 56 STEP ONE: HOW DEEP? Dig the hole no deeper than the root ball and at least 4” - 8” wider than the root ball. As you dig, watch the layers of soil you encounter, noting changes in color or texture. If you have 1” or less “topsoil” (darker color than the soil deeper down) plant the tree so that 3”-4” of the root ball is ABOVE the ground. When in doubt, PLANT HIGH! STEP TWO: HOW WIDE? Use your shovel as a tape measure. Lay the shovel across the top of the root ball; remember the spot on the shovel and measure the hole as you go. Do the same thing for the depth by holding the shovel next to the root ball; note the top and subtract 3” - 4”. STEP THREE: INTO THE HOLE! If this is a large tree, GET HELP! One person to hold the “head” (top) of the tree while the other person rolls the tree into the hole. When the root ball enters the hole, push up on the head so the root ball doesn’t go into the hole sideways. Don’t forget to untie the top branches of the tall trees first!! STEP FOUR: STRAIGHTEN AND BACKFILL Tie some ribbon on the best side before it goes into the hole. If you need to rotate, grab the wire or rope on the root ball and turn carefully. Once the tree is straight, use the existing soil to back fill the hole. fill it up half way; add water; then mix topsoil, compost, peat or pine bark with the remaining soil in the upper 4” - 6” of the hole. DO NOT REMOVE THE WIRE BASKET OR BIODEGRADABLE TWINE OR BURLAP FROM THE ROOT BALL!! Remove any nylon twine from around the trunk. STEP FIVE: BUILD A WATERING RING Build a ridge 4”-6” out and around the edge of the root ball, at the same level or slightly higher than the tree. Tamp the soil firm and smooth. STEP SIX: WATER WATER WATER!! The easiest way to water your new tree is buy a GATOR BAG! They zip on your tree, hold 20 gallons of water, and slowly water the tree right where it needs it! Fill the GATOR BAG twice a week and your tree will love you! Otherwise, use our secret code is 20-20-2: 20% hose volume, for 20 minutes, 2 times a week for the first growing season and during dry periods. If it gets really hot and dry, water 3 times a week. YOUR LAWN SPRINKLERS WILL NOT SUPPLY ENOUGH WATER FOR TREES OR SHRUBS! 57 If you need to block neighbors, streets, buildings, etc...consider what time of year the view bothers you the most, how tall the plant has to eventually be; and how much room you have for the plant’s mature size. Sun exposure (hours and intensity) and wind exposure (direction and blocking) are important in plant selection. Pick the right plant and plant it in the right place and it will thrive. Consider your house color, existing plants and favorite colors. Every plant has good and bad attributes, and we’ll do our best to find great matches to your requests! There are SO MANY new plants and they can be wonderful...or not! Give us a chance to research the plant, and we’ll find it, or find something similar that might even be better! We can refer you to companies who will build your new walkways and patios AND then help you choose plants that will complement and enhance your gardens! If you give us a range of how much you can spend on your planting project, we’ll do our best to make it happen. Be realistic; remember how much new appliances can cost; and look at your plants as an investment. Ours are better. We grew most of them ourselves, or know the grower who did. And the person selling you the plant wasn’t selling plumbing fixtures last week either! 58 Neighbor issues, both good and bad, have given us a lot of sales over the years. From neighbor kids bouncing on trampolines to naked neighbor children running around the backyard (true stories, both), to ugly cars, buildings, parking lots, etc., there’s a lot of need for privacy these days. So don’t build a wall...PLANT ONE! There’s always arborvitae, those tall, thin, popular (zzz…) evergreens...but there are lots of other choices too! SERVICEBERRY or REDBUD will grow to 20ft x 10ft, and have lovely flowers, seasonal coverage, and great fall colors. Shade tolerant too! AMUR MAPLE forms a 15ft x 15ft clump of dense branches, with excellent fall color, and while isn’t as well-known as others, is a great hedge choice. AMERICAN CRANBERRY BUSH is an excellent choice for smaller spaces, since it matures at 8ft—15ft tall and 8ft-12ft wide, and has birdattracting fruit and great fall colors. AMERICAN FILBERT is also a great choice for a thick hedge. It will grow 10ft-15ft tall and 8ft-12ft wide, flowers, small edible nuts, and is very tolerant of clay soils. And your neighbors won’t know what it is! So before you chose the big green wall of (zzz…) arborvitae, take a look at a few of these more interesting alternatives. Add in a few grasses, some fun perennials, and you’ll look at a garden, not a fence, not your neighbors...maybe you can even get them to pay for some of the plants? 59 BUTTERFLY ATTRACTORS SHRUBS HUMMINGBIRD ATTRACTORS Perennials Summersweet Rose of Sharon Mock orange Potentilla Spirea Lilac Viburnum Weigela Ninebard Butterfly Bush Hydrangea Columbine Dianthus Coneflower Daylily Gayfeather Bee Balm Cat mint Phlox Sage Black Eyed Susan Hyssop Crocosimia Daisy Lavender Stokes Aster Sedum Speedwell PERENNIALS Hardy Hibiscus Yarrow Columbine Butterfly Weed Aster Astilbe Coreopsis Coneflower Dianthus Blanket Flower Hardy Geranium Gayfeather Bee Balm Catmint Sage Phlox Pincushion Flower Black Eyed Susan Hyssop Crocosimia Daisy Lavender Stokes Aster Sedum Swamp milkweed SHRUBS & TREES Butterfly Bush Rose of Sharon Crabapple Lilac Weigela Hydrangea Summersweet 60 PLANTS WITH GOOD FRAGRANCE FALL COLOR FOR TREES & SHRUBS TREES RED Spruce Pine Horsechestnut Katsura Witch Hazel Linden Magnolia Crabapple Cherry Tree Lilac Red maple Serviceberry Sweetspire Sumac Viburnum YELLOW Hornbeam Horsechestnut Birch Ginkgo Locust Tulip Tree Redwood Sycamore Redbud Witch Hazel Cherry Lilac Bald Cypress SHRUBS Butterfly Bush Summersweet Sweetspire Juniper Mockorange Roses Elderberry Lilac Viburnum BURGUNDY PERENNIALS Katsura Blackgum Elm Zelkova Japanese Maple Dogwood Hawthorn Pear Forsythia Fothergilla Hydrangea Ninebark Dwarf Lilac Hyssop Bugbane Dianthus Lavender Peony Sage Bee Balm Hosta 61 DEER RESISTANT PLANTS perennial Anise hyssop perennial Baptisia perennial Bleeding heart perennial Catmint perennial Coreopsis perennial Daffodil perennial Ferns (most) perennial Ginger perennial Grasses (most) perennial Iris perennial Lavender perennial Ligularia perennial Lungwort perennial Pachysandra perennial Peony perennial Poppy perennial Sage (most) perennial Sweet Woodruff shrub Barberry shrub Bayberry shrub Boxwood shrub Butterfly Bush shrub Daphne shrub Junipers (most) shrub Mahonia shrub Potentilla shrub Summersweet shrub Viburnum (no scent) tree Katsura tree River birch tree Spruce (most) Shrubs Perennials: Balloon flower Bellflower Blanket Flower Clematis Daisy Geranium Hosta Ivy Penstemon Phlox Turtlehead Arborvitae Blueberry Burning Bush Holly (evergreen) Hydrangea (oakleaf) Hydrangea (climbing) Hydrangea (shade loving) Rhododendron Roses Sandcherry Yews Trees: Apple (all) Bald Cypress Cherry (fruiting) Dogwood Hemlock Larch Linden Pear (all) Redbud Sweetgum 62 LESS DEER RESISTANT PLANTS perennial Aster (most) perennial Black-eyed Susan perennial Butterfly weed perennial Cimicifuga perennial Columbine perennial Coral Bells perennial Delphinium perennial Eupatorium perennial Foam Flower perennial geranium (perennial) perennial Liatris perennial Lobelia perennial Monarda perennial Veronica shrub Beautyberry shrub Beautybush shrub Cotoneaster shrub Cypress (chamaecyparis) shrub Deutzia shrub Elderberry shrub Forsythia shrub Fothergilla shrub Itea shrub Kerria shrub Lilac shrub Michigan Holly shrub Mockorange shrub Mugo pine shrub Red twig dogwood shrub Rose of Sharon shrub Smokebush shrub Spirea (most) shrub St Johns Wort shrub Viburnum (cranberry bush) shrub Viburnum (fragrant) shrub Weigela shrub Witch Hazel tree Beech tree Cherry Trees (no fruit) tree Dawn Redwood tree Hawthorn tree Honeylocust tree Horsechestnut tree Kousa Dogwood tree Magnolia tree Serviceberry tree Tulip tree tree White Pine Black Walnut trees produce a substance called “juglone” in their roots and leaves, which is toxic to many other plants.
