New clock brings old memories
Southwick Community School students with Deputy Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Barry Curran and Deputy Mayoress Carol Curran.
A new clock remembering the sacrifices of the First World War has
brought old memories back to some of the family members of
those who lost their lives in the attack.
The 16ft tall clock is at the Wheatsheaf junction in Monkwearmouth
and close to where bombs were dropped in a Zeppelin raid that
killed 16 people on 1 April 1916. The total death toll was 22 as
more died from their injuries in the following days.
The clock and installation has been paid for with a £16,000 grant
from Sunderland City Council's North Area Committee.
It includes an interpretation panel outlining details of the Zeppelin
raid. It replaces the former concrete clock that was beyond repair
and removed as part of the remodelling of the Wheatsheaf junction.
A short ceremony in November last year was led by Sunderland's
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Barry Curran, and a two minute silence
was observed.
He said: "Every year we remember the thousands of people who
made the ultimate sacrifice as they performed their duties during
the First World War, and in subsequent conflicts.
"I was touched that families of those who lost their lives shared
Roker Pier
Another bid for further Heritage Lottery
funding has been submitted. If successful it will
be used to restore the lighthouse allowing the
facility, along with the pier tunnel, to be
opened up as a visitor attraction.
Restoration works to the pier were completed
in 2014. The pier deck was fully resurfaced and
repairs to the structure, below the waterline,
were carried out. These works will ensure that
the 111 year old structure continues to stand
despite the battering of the North Sea.
their stories and memories of the attacks. We were able to confirm
that their family members were commemorated on the plaque."
In total, as more people succumbed to their injuries, the raid
claimed 22 deaths and 128 people were injured.
Among the deaths, were a tram inspector, and a man who was
winding up the clock on the Wheatsheaf Corporation Transport
Tower.
Councillor Denny Wilson, Chair of the North Area Committee, said:
"This clock is commemorating an evening when war came to
Sunderland and a deadly load of bombs were dropped through
Millfield, Deptford and here in Monkwearmouth at the railway
station and in North Bridge Street. Lest we forget."
If you have anything you would like to share about your memories
of the Zeppelin raid, please send them to Martin Routledge, Keeper
of History, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Borough Road,
Sunderland, SR1 1PP or telephone 0191 561 8609.
Memories received will be used in an exhibition at the Sunderland
Museum & Winter Gardens in June.

Pier View
parking at Roker
Following concerns from local
residents, an area at Pier View
has been improved.
The area suffered from
inconsiderate parking and
damage to the grass.
Funding was provided by the

the area and to provide two
parking bays next to the
volunteer lifeboat building for the
use of volunteers only.
Councillor Julia Jackson, St Peter’s

Seafront
developments

£540,000 from the Coastal
Communities Fund to continue
seafront regeneration.The
successful bid ‘Sunderland - A
City by the Sea’ was lodged by a

partnership with local
businesses in Roker and
Seaburn. The money will
help further develop the
programme of events and
attractions along the seafront,
improve the business and
physical infrastructure and create
38 new jobs.
The regeneration work has
created interest from the private
sector and the redevelopment of
the former seating shelter/toilet
block is now underway and will
see it transformed into a new
restaurant and bar.
A joint venture company formed
between the council, developers
Igloo and contractors Carillion,
will bring forward development
proposals for the Ocean Park
area of the Seaburn. These
proposals will include new
housing and leisure facilities.
Roker Pool
North Area Committee has
allocated funding to develop the
former Roker paddling pool for
sport and physical activities.

Southwick Neighbourhood Youth Project (SNYP)
has been helping to improve the environment
and their local area, thanks to funding from the
LEAF fund.
Young people planted over 420 trees in the
quarries from the Woodland Trust that included
a mixture of oak, hazel, silver birch, blackthorn,
hawthorn and rowan. They also supported litter
picking projects down at the riverside and built
habitat homes and placed them in the local
environment for our local wildlife.
The project is ongoing and more work with the
local environment will continue in spring of 2015.
Other work is continuing across the North to
improve the local environment, including:
• Approx 3000 daffodil bulbs have been planted
at Johnstone Villas, on the old allotment site
• Plans are in place to remove shrubs near the
half-way house pub
• Work has been carried out at
Tyzacks/Edgeworth Crescent in Roker to help
reduce anti-social behaviour
• Benches have been repainted on the
Sculpture trail near the National Glass Centre
and in Thompson Park
• Landscaping work has been carried out on the
Sculpture trail to remove shrubs and trees
• Community payback scheme have been
involved in a project to remove shrubs at the
rear of the Seaburn Centre.

Hylton Castle developments
Following a successful Round 1 bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, work is underway to prepare
the plans required to submit a second round bid for approximately £3million.
The Round 2 submission will go forward in August 2015 with a decision in late November. If the
bid is successful it will enable the castle to be brought back in to use and safeguard its long term
future with development works planned to take place during 2016-17.
Sunderland City Council, police, youth services and English Heritage are working together to
reduce anti-social behaviour at Hylton Castle. Planned work will include increased police patrols,
an XL youth village on Friday and Saturday nights and a deep clean of the area with help from
volunteers. Local residents can report issues by calling 0191 553 1998

Hilton Hotel
Artist impression of the new hotel.
Sunderland’s brand-new Hilton Hotel moved a step closer with the start of work on the site next to the
Stadium of Light in December.
The 141-bed hotel, is set to open in spring 2016 and is part of the world famous Hilton group. It will
have a feature bar and destination restaurant, meeting spaces and private dining areas.
During construction it is expected the hotel will create up to 180 jobs and once completed, the hotel
will create over 100 direct full and part-time jobs.
Cllr Harry Trueman, Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “It’s great to see this project
getting started, it is a fantastic development for Sunderland. The city welcomes hundreds of thousands
of visitors every year, to a wide range of major events, and new high-quality hotel provision like this will
hopefully encourage more of those visitors to stay in Sunderland, providing an additional boost to the
local economy.
The hotel development is being built by north-east based Tolent Construction Limited. Its chairman,
John Wood said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work on this very prestigious
development, which will add to the ever increasing profile of Sunderland and the region.
“Our own locally-based workforce will be employed on the project and wherever possible we will
resource local suppliers and subcontractors to ensure that we reinvest in the local economy."
