Sensex slides 145 points as
geo-political worries build
MUMBAI: A build-up in tension linked to geo-political
developments gave markets
the blues on Wednesday as
the Sensex lost 145 points
at 29,643 while domestic investors sat tight ahead of
start of the corporate earnings season. Industrial output data for February and
retail inflation for March,
slated for release after the
market hours, heightened
the sense of uncertainty.
After starting higher, the
30-share Sensex slipped
into negative territory before settling down 144.87
points, or 0.49 per cent at
29,643.48.
The gauge had bounced
213 points in the previous
session. The 50-issue NSE
Nifty ended lower by 33.55
points, or 0.36 per cent, at
9,203.45 after cracking below 9,200. Sentiment soured
over rising military heat in
the Middle East and the
Korean peninsula following
last week's US strike against
Syria and sabre-rattling by
the US and North Korea,
which pushed investors to
safer assets like gold, treasuries and the yen.
The rupee weakness
against the dollar fed negative mood.
Caution also prevailed
ahead of the March quarterly earnings with IT behemoth Infosys set to unveil
its numbers tomorrow. "Rising geopolitical tensions
continued to stoke risk
aversion, with investors ap-
Rupee softens
11 paise against
US dollar
MUMBAI: The rupee shed
11 paise to 64.61 against the
US dollar in early trade on
Wednesday following fresh
demand for the American
currency from banks and importers. Moreover, the US
dollar's gains against some
currencies overseas put the
rupee on backfoot, forex
dealers said. However, a
higher opening of the domestic equity market capped
the rupee's fall. Yesterday,
the rupee had recovered
some of the lost ground and
advanced by 6 paise to end
at 64.50 against the US dollar amid mild selling of the
American currency by exporters. (PTI)
Microsoft bids
farewell to
Windows Vista
NEW YORK: Software giant Microsoft has finally
said goodbye to 10-year-old
Windows Vista operating
system that had debuted
with severe criticism.
According to a report in
Verge on Tuesday, the users of Windows Vista will
have to move to a more recent version of Windows to
remain secure.
"Codenamed Longhorn,
Windows Vista was originally supposed to revolutionise Windows with a new
file system and user interface. Microsoft's development of Longhorn spiralled
out of control, and the company was forced to reset its
plans," the report noted.
The deathknell for Vista
was blown since last year
when Firefox indicated it
would support the obsolete
OS until next September,
while Google said Gmail
would not work with it later
in 2017.
Then came a blow from
gaming titan Blizzard that
declared to "cut Vista users
off from its leading titles one
after another." (IANS)

The broader markets too
felt the heat, with BSE smallcap and mid-cap indices

Most fruitful Budget session in
legislative history: Minister
NEW DELHI: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister
H.N. Ananth Kumar on
Wednesday
said
the
Budget
session
of
Parliament that concluded
earlier during the day has
been very fruitful as both
houses passed all financial
bills before March 31.
‘This Budget session has
been very fruitful... in the
last 70 years. This is for the
first time in Indian legislative history that all financial
business of the government
has been completed before
the start of the next financial year, and that too by
following the due process of
general discussion, scrutiny
by Standing Committees,"
Ananth Kumar said.
‘A total of 24 bills were
introduced. Of these, the
Lok Sabha passed a record
23 bills, including some very
important ones, while the
Rajya Sabha passed 14 bills.
A total of 18 bills were
passed by both the
Houses,’ the Minister said.
He said the Union Budget
2017-18 has already come
into effect from April 1,
which is "unprecedented".
Earlier, the Budget used to
come into effect from July.
He said the productivity
of the Lok Sabha has been
113 per cent and the Rajya
Sabha's 92 per cent.
The Minister appreciated

Facebook adds
group payments
to Messenger
NEW YORK: Facebook
has rolled out group payments feature within its
Messenger app, allowing
users to pay either everyone
in the group or individual
members.
According to a report in
Tech Crunch on Tuesday,
users can also request payments from the group right
within their chat.
Users can enter the
amount they want to request from each person or
the total amount to be divided evenly by the group
members. They can also
mention in a note about
what the money is for.
"A message will appear
in the group chat to show
who has paid. Those details
are available by viewing the
Request Details in fullscreen, too," the report
noted.
This is a free service and
does not require a password. Available on Android
and desktop as of now, the
group payments is live in
the US since Tuesday.
"Payments is an area of
Facebook's business that
hasn't received as much focus over the years, despite
the social network's potential to collect and store payment data for its sizable user
base," the report stated.
Facebook had introduced person-to-person
payments within Messenger in early 2015. Now the
decision to expand the feature to group payments coincides the time when
Facebook is rumoured to be
preparing the launch of a
digital payments business
in India within its other
messaging app, WhatsApp.

NEW DELHI: The recent four-match Test series between
India and Australia has drawn a record number of eyeballs. As India consolidated their position as the No. 1
Test team having defeating Australia 2-1 during the series that concluded last month, Star Sports delivered
record viewership numbers. "The #TestofTheBest campaign for the India-Australia Test series delivered on its
promise becoming the highest rated Test series in the
history of BARC," a statement from Star Sports said.
The Test series delivered a total of 1.1 billion gross impressions with the third Test match itself recording 383
million viewership. Year 2017 for cricket started with a
bang as the ODI series between India and England became the highest rated bilateral ODI series in the last

McLaren’s Alonso to miss
Monaco for Indy 500
LONDON: McLaren's former two-time world champion
Fernando Alonso will miss next month's Formula One
Monaco Grand Prix to race for them in the Indianapolis
500, the British-based team said on Wednesday. The
two showpiece races take place on May 28 and McLaren
-- whose fortunes have plummeted in F1 -- "will enter a
single car in the 101st Indianapolis 500," said a team
statement. McLaren did not say who will take the Spaniard's place for the Monaco race, one of the highlights
of the grand prix calendar. However, his absence sparked
speculation that his position could be filled in Monte
Carlo by Britain's Jenson Button, another ex-Formula
One world champion, who remains under contract in an
ambassadorial role with McLaren. (AFP)
Pandya, Rana power Mumbai
to victory over Hyderabad
MUMBAI: Young guns Krunal Pandya and Nitish Rana
played contrasting knocks
as Mumbai Indians eased
past defending champions
Sunrisers Hyderabad by
four wickets in an Indian
Premier League encounter,
here on Wednesday.
After younger brother
Hardik Pandya's pyrotechnics against KKR, it was
elder brother Krunal's turn
to play a lovely cameo as
his 37 off 20 balls was
largely instrumental in
Mumbai Indians knocking
off a tricky target of 159 in
overs.
Young Delhi left-hander
Nitish Rana once again
proved his worth as he anchored the chase with an
invaluable 45 off 36 balls
with the help of three
boundaries and two sixes.
But it was the elder Pandya, who made a mockery
of a target that could have
been troublesome when
Mumbai Indians were reduced to 111 for 4 in the 14th
over.
Along with Rana, Krunal
added 38 runs in 3.3 overs
and Rana's contribution
was a single. Krunal hit three
fours and three huge sixes - one each of Nehra, Ben
Cutting and Rashid Khan.
It was the second victory
in three matches for Mumbai Indians while Sunrisers
tasted their first defeat in the
10th edition of the league.
The target was an easy
one but Mumbai did face
some challenge and it was
young Rashid Khan (1/19 in
taking 3/24 in 4 overs.
The visitors innings saw
a slump once Warner got
dismissed by Harbhajan in
the 11th over as wickets fell
regularly thereafter with
only Ben Cutting (20), from
the rest, reaching double
figures.
Warner and Dhawan
made a cautious start and
then accelerated during the
later stages.
The first two overs from
Harbhajan and Malinga
yielded just four runs before
Sunrisers captain Warner
struck the off-spinner for a
couple fours on the off-side.
The Powerplay overs
produced 34 runs and that
too after the Sunrisers skipper hit Malinga behind the
wicket for two fours on either side. (PTI)

Brief Scores
Hyderabad: 158/8 (Warner
49, Dhawan 48, Bumrah 324, Harbhajan 2-23)
Mumbai Indians: 159/6
(Rana 45, Patel 39, Bhuvneshwar 3-21)
4 overs) who bowled an immaculate line on a placid
track. His googly fooled an
experienced campaigner like
MI skipper Rohit Sharma.
He bowled 12 dots and
conceded a single six in his
four over spell in-front of a
capacity crowd.
Credit should be given to
Rana for hitting Mustafizur
Rahaman behind the square
for a six and also effortlessly
lofted Deepak Hooda's
friendly off-break into cowcorner stand.
Earlier, Harbhajan Singh
and young fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah put brakes on
Sunrisers Hyderabad restricting them to 158 for 8
after a solid opening start
against Mumbai Indians in
an IPL encounter, here on
Wednesday.
Warner blasted his way
to 49 off 34 balls, with the
help of two sixes and seven
fours, while his opening
partner Dhawan made 48 in
43 balls as the two left-handers put on 81 for the first
wicket in just over 10 overs.
Harbhajan, who opened
the bowling had fantastic
figures of 2/23 in four overs
while Bumrah was once
again brilliant at the death

KOLKATA: Two-time
champions Kolkata Knight
Riders would be wary of a
transformed and formidable
Kings XI Punjab in their Indian Premier League face-off
at the Eden Gardens here on
Thursday.
The Purple Brigade,
champions in 2012 and 2014,
may boast of a 13-6 win-loss
record against the perennial
bridesmaid but the scenario
looks different, especially in
the context of an injured
Chris Lynn, the leading rungetter of the season.
The Aussie had become
IPL's latest batting sensation after his 41-ball 93 not
out in a record 184-run
opening stand with Gautam
Gambhir (76 from 48)
handed Gujarat Lions a 10wicket rout in the opening
match. But Lynn aggravated
an old injury in his left
shoulder against Mumbai
Indians where KKR suffered
a four-wicket loss.
Lynn had undergone surgery on the same shoulder
in 2014 and the injury returned to haunt him, throwing his IPL campaign in disarray even as an official
word was still awaited.
While Lynn looks doubtful, KKR will be boasted by
the return of star India pacer Umesh Yadav. (PTI)

Saurav Ganguly
NEW DELHI: Former India
captain Sourav Ganguly on
Wednesday said Mahendra
Singh Dhoni is a "champion
ODI player" but doubted if
he is still that good in the
shortest format.
"I am not too sure if
Dhoni is a good T20 player.
He is a champion ODI player
but when it comes to T20
cricket, in 10 years, he has
got one fifty and that's not
the best record," Ganguly
told India Today.
Ganguly's scathing comments came on the back
Dhoni's ever-falling run in
the shortest format of the
game.
Dhoni, who has been relived of captaincy duties by
Rising Pune Supergiant and
is playing for the first time
as a player in the Indian Premier League, hasn't performed as per the expectations in the ongoing league.
With scores of 12 not out,
5 and 11 in the three IPL 10
games he has played so far
for the Rising Pune Supergiant, the 35-year-old cricketer, regarded as India's most
successful skipper across all
formats, has failed to live up
to the expectations of his
fans.
Ganguly, however, said
Dhoni is too good an ODI
player to be ignored from
India's Champions Trophy
squad.
"I will pick Dhoni for the
Champions Trophy but he
has to score runs," Ganguly
said.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke also feels
it is high time for Dhoni to
explode with the bat. (PTI)

Juventus stun lacklustre Barcelona 3-0
Champions League first-leg quarter-final
Juventus players celebrate their win over Barcelona at the end of Champions League
first-leg quarterfinal match at the Juventus Stadium in Turin on Tuesday. (PTI)
TURIN (ITALY): Argentina
forward Paulo Dybala
scored a delightful first-half
double to eclipse his illustrious compatriot Lionel
Messi as Juventus recorded
a stunning 3-0 win over
Barcelona in the first leg of
their Champions League
quarter-final.
Dybala netted twice before the midway point in the
first half and Giorgio Chiellini added the third goal early
in the second half in Turin
to leave Juve in control of
the tie ahead of next
Wednesday's return at the
Camp Nou.
Having made history
when they overturned a 4-0
first-leg deficit against Paris
Saint-Germain in the last 16
by winning the return 6-1,
Barcelona will need another
stunning comeback if they
are to reach the last four.
Juventus last met the
Spanish giants when they
lost 3-1 in the 2015 final, but
here they ran Luis Enrique's
men ragged and nullified the
visitors' front three of
Messi, Neymar and Luis
Suarez.
A Sami Khedira effort in
the opening minutes went
well over, but it was a sign
of things to come in a great
opening half for the hosts
that saw 23-year-old Dybala
sparkle.
Juve's seventh-minute
opener was a work of simplicity finished off by a Dybala master stroke.
Juan Cuadrado was the
provider on the right flank,
setting up Dybala who
turned 12 yards out and
curled a left- footed shot inside the far post, beyond the
outstretched hand of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Barca continued to press
but could not get the away
goal that would have improved their chances ahead
of the second leg. (AFP)
MCC amends laws to protect wicketkeepers
LONDON: With an aim to protect wicketkeepers from
freak injuries, the Marylebone Cricket Club has ratified
the use of tethers to limit the distance that that bails can
travel when the wicket is broken.
Mark Boucher had suffered such a freak injury when
he was struck by the bails in the left eye during the opening match of South Africa's 2012 tour of England. He had
undergone a long surgery but eventually had to retire.
Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim's career also
ended after he had a similar injury during an Asia Cup
encounter against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2000. It was a
ball from Anil Kumble that struck the batsman on the boot
and rose to hit Karim on the right eye.
Responding to these incidents, MCC has decided to
alterate Law 8.3, following an approach from two companies - one from South Africa and the other from the UK -

Caribbean Premier League
to return to United States
INDIANAPOLIS: The Hero Caribbean Premier League
(CPL) on Wednesday confirmed that the biggest party
in sport will return to the US after the ICC approved the
staging of Twenty20 fixtures in 2017. The Hero CPL has
gained approval from the ICC to stage the event, who
are the approving authority whilst USACA's membership of the ICC remains suspended. The fixtures will be
played in Central Broward Stadium, Lauderhill (Florida)
once more. In all, six matches were staged in 2016 which
generated $12,583,246 into the local Florida economy.
The Hero CPL invested $1,668,151 with the combined
visitor spend of $4,751,872 being the highest in this year's
tournament overall. (UNI)

who have submitted designs for mechanisms that tether
the bails to the stumps, without limiting their ability to be
dislodged.
Law 8.3.4 now reads: "Devices aimed at protecting
player safety by limiting the distance that a bail can travel
off the stumps will be allowed, subject to the approval of
the Governing Body for the match and the ground authority."
The UK version, designed by Gus Kennedy, a
former Oxford and Cambridge MCCU wicketkeeper, comprises of two holes, drilled down into the off and leg
stumps, and a tiny, lightweight ball, attached to a piece of
cotton. The ensemble rests on a platform, so that there is
no weight pulling on the bail, which is then able to travel
no further than three inches when the stumps are put
down. (PTI)

Sindhu advances to
second round of
Singapore Open
SINGAPORE: Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu and
ace male shuttler Kidambi
Srikanth registered contrasting victories in their respective events to make it
to the second round of Singapore Open Superseries,
here on Wednesday.
Sindhu staved off a stiff
challenge from 2016 All

Okuhara of Japan to make a
positive start to her campaign, while Srikanth blew
away Kenta Nishimato of
Japan in straight games in
his opening duel.
Sindhu,
who
had
clinched her maiden India
Open Super Series title earlier this month, fought back
from a game down to eke out
a 10-21 21-15 22-20 win in the
opening round of a women's
singles match that lasted an
hour and two minutes.
The fifth seeded Indian
will next face Indonesian Fitriani Fitriani.
Srikanth, on the other
hand, crushed Nishimoto
21-12 21- 11 in the men's singles first round later in the
day.
Srikanth will play Ihsan
Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia in his next match.
Earlier in the day, runners-up at Syed Modi Grand
Prix Gold in January, B Sai
Praneeth also dished out a
gritty performance to prevail
17-21 21-7 21-19 over Denmark's Emil Holst. The Indian will clash with China's
