Who We Are
Community Sailing of Colorado – CSC – is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization created in 1994 to provide public
access to sailing instruction in Colorado. We do this
by providing sailing programs for all, including adults,
youth, and individuals with physical and mental
disabilities. Our passion is to share the joy of sailing
through hands-on skill building and empowerment
across the Front Range communities.

knowledge on how to be safe on the water. Rent, Race & Rally Nights on
Thursdays at Cherry Creek Reservoir are a special rental opportunity
for our community interested in racing. $20 per person will cover
the cost of boat rental, race participation, and even a post-race BBQ!

ADAPTIVE SAILING PROGRAM
Our Adaptive Sailing Program was created to empower those community members
living with physical or mental disabilities. We partner with various organizations
such as Craig Hospital, Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center, National Sports
Center for the Disabled, and many others to offer specialized outings adapted
to fit their specific needs. We use specialized equipment, including RS Venture Keels,
Access 303 Dinghies and a portable adaptive lift. Sailors of all experience levels
can enjoy the kind of therapeutic recreation sailing offers with its inherent feelings
of independence and freedom. It is our hope that the ease of sailing can bring on
new confidence, joy, and feelings of autonomy with what is possible using the right
tools and approach.
OUTREACH
As our outreach programs expand, we look to involve organizations in our
community who collaborate with the underserved populations in the Denver and
Boulder metro areas. We hope that creating partnerships to host events catered to the
specific needs of a group will help to cultivate an even greater sense of unity. If you
know of an organization or community group who could benefit from a low to no
cost, therapeutic, team-building, recreation experience, please let us know! We are
very excited to give back to members of the community who serve others for the
greater good.

programs. Our Spirit of Sailing Gala is supported by community leaders, local
business owners, and our extended sailing family.
END OF SEASON FUNDRAISER
Our final party of the season is typically held in early September. This event brings
our entire sailing community together for a fun afternoon at our Sailing Center at
Cherry Creek. We host a BBQ, conduct family fun races, and let people go for a sail.
A lively raffle helps raise about $3,000 for our Junior Racing Program.
MOVIE NIGHT
This annual winter event is held at a large theater near downtown Denver. We have
screened such films as Morning Light and Captain Ron along with documentaries
including One Simple Question and Maiden Voyage. We always try to make the event
interactive by video conferencing with a member of the cast or film crew after the
movie. This interaction makes the event a lot of fun.
US SAILING TRAININGS
As a US Sailing Accredited Community Sailing Center, we host annual trainings
like the US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 course to certify new instructors. This 4-day
intensive course is the initial step for new instructors to begin their teaching careers.
We soon hope to host US Powerboating Courses as well to encourage new boaters to
learn the right way and stay safe while having fun on the water.

Scholarships
ROY BURLEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
In 2014, we all lost a great friend and a part of our sailing community after a
long, courageous battle with cancer. Roy loved sailing and enjoyed all aspects
of the sport. Because he was beneficiary of similar programs as a junior
sailor, he felt compelled to donate to programs that impact future youth.
Although he is missed very much, Roy’s memory will live on in the Roy Burley
Scholarship Fund. By sharing his love of sailing, we are creating opportunities for
those who need it most. The scholarships are funded by individual donations that are
solicited during the Annual Gala Fundraiser as well as through year-round donations.
Sliding-scale and full scholarships are awarded to children annually, thanks to our
generous donors.
“As a teacher on a limited budget for summer camp experience for our son, we are very appreciative of CSC’s scholarship support. Thank you! ” — CSC PARENT
From 2015-2016, we impacted 110 young sailors through this scholarship program
and since its inception, we have had over 1,000 scholarship recipients in total.
Sharing sailing with those who never thought they would ever learn to sail makes
our community stronger by instilling youth with the confidence and experiences
that sailing inherently teaches.

Ways to Get Involved
VOLUNTEER
Volunteering with others who share a passion for sailing creates an incredible sense
of community and camaraderie. There are many ways to get involved: lend a hand
with an adaptive outing, help us run races or set up the BBQ on Thursday nights,
or be an extra support person for a Free Sail Night. If you have any other ideas or
helpful skills you’d like to share, please let us know! We will be holding volunteer
training days to familiarize our volunteers, while increasing comfort and confidence
in the various tasks you might be interested in doing with us.
CORPORATE GIVING
If you don’t have a ton of time to help out because you’re so busy with work, there’s a
chance you might still be able to assist us through corporate giving. Many businesses
or organizations have corporate programs that benefit nonprofits through charitable
donations. Speak with your HR representative to find out if there is anything your
employer offers in this regard. We will be thrilled to provide all of the information
needed to help with this process. Corporate Giving is what made half of our Free
Adaptive Sail Nights possible this season!
GO SAILING
Yes, go sailing and even bring a friend! It sounds simple enough, right, and yet in
reality this is one of the easiest ways to get the word out about our organization. Free
Sail Nights are a great opportunity to introduce sailing to a friend, neighbor, coworker,
or family member. If you already know how to sail and you want to take it to the next
level, join us for Thursday Rent, Race & Rally Nights. Know someone who used to
race somewhere else and moved here but hasn’t picked it back up? These nights are a
perfect opportunity to get them reconnected with sailing here in Colorado.

Community Sailing of Colorado was established in 1994 on Standley Lake, in a
suburb of Denver. The organization was created by Steven Frank, who recognized
a need for a well-structured program to educate youth in the Denver area through
sailing and water activities.
Today, CSC hosts sailing camps and classes for all ages across the Front Range from
April through October. Throughout the summer, CSC offers weeklong Learn to Sail,
Intermediate, and Advanced Sailing Camps, along with Little Puffs Camps for first
time sailors, allowing youngsters to develop sailing skills in fun and challenging ways.
Camps are conducted at the Boulder and Cherry Creek Reservoirs.
Since its inception, CSC has shared the joy of sailing with over 12,000 students with
many of them receiving scholarships to participate in our programs. We pride
ourselves on the countless number of community outreach events we hold each year.
These opportunities allow us to partner with community organizations and share the
joy of sailing with those who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
In 2011, CSC purchased two Access 303 Wide-Seater Dinghies, boats specially
designed for adaptive sailing. This launched our Adaptive Sailing Program for
individuals with physical and mental disabilities and set our organization along the
path of developing this program to reach everyone in our community. Our Adaptive
Sailing Program has grown throughout the years to reach over 1,000 people in
Colorado and beyond. This is due to our many community partnerships serving
individuals with disabilities. Our mission challenges us to “Make Sailing in Colorado
Accessible to All. Teach Skills, Build Confidence & Have Fun.”
