I learned that we don’t have to completely drop unhealthy food.
I can still eat unhealthy food, but only in moderation. Instead of
sitting in front of my desk all day, I should go out and exercise or
walk around the room.
Jodie
This seminar had a huge impact on me; even though I’m thin, I
still need to exercise and have a balanced diet. My parents and
grandparents always say that I need to eat lots of fruit, but now I
can tell them that too much fruit is not good because they contain
fructose which the body cannot fully digest or absorb. Mixing fried
dishes with fried side dishes (e.g. fried chicken and French fries) is
not healthy and I’ve been doing this in the past years. This seminar
really changed my mindset. Thank you Ms. Elisse.
I have never read or paid much attention to the nutrition facts on
the back of the packaging since I thought it wasn’t that important
or it wouldn’t affect my body much. Now I know that I am what
I eat. I can gain more weight just by eating unhealthily. I don’t
like to drink soft drinks and I’m going to continue with that habit.
However, I drink sweet drinks a lot and now I’ll try to reduce the
amount I drink.

On 15 December 2016, Bukit Sion Blue Campus rejoiced, celebrating
the birth of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. The school choir and band worked
in collaboration with masters of ceremony Sir Marco and Livia (10.4) to
herald the theme that Salvation Is In The Son. Music and voice harmonized
together, touching the hearts of many who attended. Following the
praising of the Lord through songs sung by those on and off stage, a
sermon was brought to the students by Sir Andy. He preached that those
who wish to live like Christ will undoubtedly face suffering just as Christ
did. Many also responded in their hearts as Sir Andy prayed.
At the conclusion of the service, the students went home with a bag
full of goodies, beaming smiles on their faces as they ended the school
year. “I’m grateful that we got together, it was a wonderful way to close
off the semester!” declared Rachel Naomi (8.2). “The Christmas celebration
was a blessing to all of us,” shared Austin Bennedict, “an event which we
celebrate only once a year and for that we should be thankful.”

I used to think that to be thinner, I have to eat less food, so I would
have to decrease my lunch and dinner intakes. However, I learned
that we can stay fit not by eating less but by eating right and by
doing some exercises. I no longer have to starve myself, not eat
food until I’m full, or say that I’m not hungry even though I am.
Benedict
Today’s seminar taught me that I need to eat more vegetables
than fruit daily. At first I thought that fruit and vegetables have the
same nutrients and what not, but now I just learned that fructose
is really hard for our body to digest. So from today I have to learn
to eat more vegetables instead of fruit. I also learned that I could
decrease my calorie intake by changing the way I cook, like eating
boiled potatoes instead of fried potatoes, eating boiled chicken
instead of fried chicken. In order to decrease my body weight I also
learned the ‘go’, ‘slow’ and ‘whoa’ food. This helps me to select
foods that I will eat every day.
Regina Floretta
I thought calories were all that matters but after this seminar, I
now know that the amount of sugar foods contain is also very
important.
I don’t like vegetables, so what I think I need to do is try to find the
type of vegetables that I like. I also used to think that fruit is a good
substitute for vegetables, but after the seminar, I learned that we
cannot substitute vegetables with fruit.
Andrea
After the seminar, I realized that my eating habits were wrong and
I need to change them. I don’t usually check the labels on food
packaging, but now I will try to pay attention and check them.
Because I now realize if I keep on eating too much unhealthy food
with lots of calories, I will get fatter and fatter and eventually
become ill. So thank you Ms. Elisse because your seminar has
changed the way I think. I will be a good “SWAPPER”.
Puteri
I would like to be a “swapper”, changing my activities from sitting
to walking more and maybe instead of watching videos, I’ll exercise
a lot more and stay healthier. I’ll substitute junk food for healthier
options. Also, I’ll balance how much I eat and the things I do (how
active I am).
Himaya
Although personally I think my diet is quite healthy because of my
mom’s cooking, one thing I still need to do is to exercise more. I
don’t like exercising and actually prefer to stay in bed. Now I want
to exercise more and keep my diet balanced and healthy.
Yasmin
I learned that we should not just eat healthy food, but also do some
exercise. As an example, because my house is near my school, I can
walk or take the bike rather than go by car.

Bukit Sion’s ambitious Business Studies trio (Vania, Tiffany and
Melvania) turned some heads competing in the UPH Business School
Talent Exploration on 16-17 November 2016. They created their own
business idea, made a research paper and proposal, underwent rigorous
observations and finally presented it to the judges for questioning. “All
of our templates and fonts were messed up since we had to use the
committee’s computer for our presentation,” Vania (12 IPS) said. “I was nervous as I watched the girls answer the questions that were
bombarding them. But, thank God, they could answer the questions
boldly and fluently,” Ms. Anik commented. Congratulations on achieving
second place in such a prestigious competition, girls!
As we launch ourselves back into our school and work
routines, let’s take a moment to reflect on what will
actually make this year a happy one. The beginning of a new
year comes with a sense of excitement, ambition and striving to
replace ill-fortune with positive ideals. Haven’t we all made at
least one new year’s resolution before? Live more healthily … be
more financially wise … try a new hobby… But what can change
2017 permanently, and even our lives eternally?
ROARRR!!! The Lions have once again proven their ability to reign in
basketball. Recently at the SMAK 4 Khatulistiwa Cup, they successfully took
home the championship crown after their triumph over Tunas Bangsa in the
final game. The absence of their star players, Jason Lie and James Huang
(DBL All Stars), didn’t knock down the team’s spirit and determination to
win the title. The players’ brilliant teamwork made Bukit Sion once again
unbeatable on the court.
In addition, the Middle School team also showed an outstanding
performance. The Lion Cubs succeeded in making all of us proud, taking
another championship title after destroying Ipeka Tomang by 42-12 in the
final game of ‘Flash SMPK7 Penabur Cup’ on 26 November 2016. “It was a
pleasure to play with my teammates for the whole 3 years. Even some of us
will be separated this year. We gained experiences from all the tournaments
that we have been through,” said Hansen, the team’s captain. To God be the
glory, great things He hath done!
In a society bombarded by social media, let’s return to God’s pure
wisdom: “For I know the plans that I have for you” (Jer 29:11).
How refreshing! The Master Architect has already designed plans
for each and every one of us to prosper - so what must we do
to access these ‘blue prints’? David begins the book of Psalms
by claiming that the most successful person is the one who
meditates on His word day and night (Psa 1:1-3). Who doesn’t
want to be successful? The gospel of Matthew also reminds us
to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these
things will be added to [us].” These verses are like chicken soup
for the hungry soul, so why is it that our new year’s resolutions so
often fizzle out just like the sparklers we waved in the air at the
new year’s eve countdown?
Are our actions too often dictated or distracted by our senses
(sight, hearing, etc)? Let’s not forget that the apostle Paul could
only see God’s glorious plan for his life once he was made physically
blind. What about our anxieties, fears and disappointments? Here
is where must remember that if we live by the leading of the Holy

Bukit Sion has yet again seized another victory, dispatching our finest soldiers into
the battlefield, ready to shine for the One who gave us our abilities. Our brave warriors:
Audi (8.4), Flavia (8.1), Nicholas (7.3) & last but not least, Vania (7.3).
The Regional finals were held at the Puri campus on 14 September 2016, with Audi,
Nicholas and Vania spelling their way to the Grand Final. Nicholas and Vania won first
and third place respectively, giving them a first-time opportunity to represent the Puri
district at Britama Arena, Kelapa Gading, in the EF National Spelling Bee.
Nicholas made it to the semi-finals, conquering words such as ‘adjudicate’,
‘garrulous’ and ‘hoi polloi’. Though the journey ended there, his enthusiasm didn’t. “It
was a great experience overall,” Audi, our regional finalist, said. “It was neck and neck
right to the end,” exclaimed Ms Hannah, “all students performed commendably and
should be proud of their achievements.”
Acoustic Band competition
By Nicholas (8.1)
On 11 November 2016, Bukit Sion Middle School
acoustic band competed for the first time in Ipeka Puri’s
SKIPI Jam: Band Acoustic competition. After rehearsing their
timing, tone and dynamics tirelessly for several weeks, they
managed to secure 3rd place overall!
Many thanks to Mr. Sam for assisting with the preparation
of 2 songs specifically arranged for the competition. Michael
(9.2), the pianist for the band, stated, “I am very thankful
to God for giving me the opportunity to join this SKIPI
competition. I am so proud of my teammates!!” Look out,
budding musicians, for your next chance to join the fun!

revolution
By Ms Hannah
Spirit, feelings and emotions won’t rule our mind; we will know
true peace (Matt 6:30-32). Moreover, we will come to know the
steps established for our lives before time began (Psa 37:23). At
Bukit Sion, we learn that sons of men can become sons of God.
That means we will also be given the faith of Christ necessary to
live as He did, doing the Father’s will. Doesn’t this sound like a
beautiful and revolutionary purpose for this year, and those to
come? We can be assured that this is possible because the Father
in Heaven proclaimed it Himself. John 15:16 says “You did not
choose Me but I chose you”. We can rest in this, and receive
the faith of Christ Himself as a gift (Eph 2:8) to enable us to live
righteously.
Have a revolution of faith. Focus on what God has planned for
our lives. A son of God is not designed to determine their own
path, just like a cat does not possess the DNA to fly. What’s your
new year’s revolution? “We are His workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we
would walk in them” (Eph 2:10).

We have to change our diet to a healthier one, for example, cereal
to oatmeal. I used to eat oatmeal in the morning and at night,
and I didn’t really like it, not knowing its benefits, but now I do. It
reduces the fat intake and cleanses my intestines. From now on, I
will consume healthier food.
appy new year, one and all!
The Cambridge dictionary defines a resolution as “a promise to
oneself to do or not to do something”; whereas it dictates that a
revolution is “a very important change in the way that people do
things”. It even offers the synonym ‘metamorphosis’. The latter
is more powerful and even infers that the change is visible to
others. Now to answer the question of how we can stick with such
a fundamental change…
Kelly
I rarely eat vegetables, but from now on I will try to consume more
vegetables. I know this is not easy, but it is for my own good. I can
probably eat vegetables with the addition of my favorite food (e.g.
salmon) so that the vegetables will still taste good.

Christmas Celebration
Mr. Dennis – English
Grades 1-3 Celebrate the Real Reason for the CHRISTmas Season
By Sir Dave
By Ms. Herlin
“Yay! It’s Christmas! We really like
it!,” gleefully shouted the little
ones. All Bukit Sion Kindergarten
and Kawanan Domba Kecil students were excited
to celebrate Christmas with their teachers, friends,
and parents. They were so enthused to render their
best performances after they had practiced for quite
some time. And they did it superbly! They didn’t hesitate
to do the movements, the dancing, ballet movements,
singing, playing of the angklung, as well as showcasing
the tambourine dance.
“Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh…..” Hold
on a second, we don’t have any snow here. Well it doesn’t mean we are
not allowed to sing ‘Jingle Bells’ and enjoy Christmas! Yes, it was such a
blast when Bukit Sion Elementary School celebrated Christmas. On that
special occasion, the students did not merely perform on the stage, but
they also learnt that Christmas is not all about receiving gifts under the
Christmas tree.
But rather, it’s about sharing the love of Christ with others. And
sharing is not just about giving gifts, but paying attention to the people
around us and spending time with them. These are some ways to share
the love and joy of Christmas day. As Christians, we desire to be kind
people who care for one another and who are willing to make others
feel loved and accepted. Let’s continue to spread the warmth of love and
kindness this New Year!
We’re proud of you heaps! Do keep the spirit of Christmas
alive, not only on Christmas, but every single day.

On Sep 3 and 17, 2016, Bukit Sion students from Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6
participated in the annual International Competitions and Assessments
for Schools (ICAS) for English, Science, Mathematics and Digital
Technologies.
ICAS are designed to assess students’ academic ability, and are
independent evaluations of students’ skills and knowledge in core
learning areas and provide insights into students’ understanding for each
subject. The skills and understandings tested are important indicators of
success in school and beyond.
The efforts of the students, who had undergone training with their
respective trainers since July, paid off and they achieved excellent results
across all subjects.
Here are the results:
Kindergarten is a great time to introduce kids to the magic of science!
Around this age, children are typically capable of physically engaging with
objects on their own, and having gained some facility with language, they
begin to describe and discuss their experiences.
Doing science experiments is a great way to get your kids excited
about learning. Cool science experiments spark curiosity and inspire kids
to want to learn more. So this was what PTA did first this year. They created
memories of fun and meaningful educational science activities on Science
Day for the children to enjoy.
First, the children were tasked to create a tornado in a bottle. They filled
the plastic bottle with water until it reached around three quarters full. They
then added a few drops of dish washing liquid and sprinkled in a few pinches
of glitter and some water beads (this makes the tornado easier to see). Next,
the cap was put on and closed tightly and the bottle was quickly spun for a
few seconds. Finally, when the bottle stopped spinning, the children peered
inside to see if they can see a mini tornado forming in the water. The children
eventually succeeded in creating a tornado after attempting to get it right a
few times.
Secondly, the kindergarteners made kinetic sand, a kind of sand that
is super squishy, mold-able, and lots of fun to play with it. They mixed
fine sand and cornstarch in a bowl, then slowly added a few drops of dish
washing liquid and water. This mixture was thoroughly stirred and let dry for
1-2 hours. Eventually, the kids learned that dish soap is what gives the sand

a kinetic-like quality. To cap this activity, a cup of kinetic sand was given to
each child for him/her to bring home.
Overall, the children greatly enjoyed the wide array of interesting
science experiments. It also got them thinking outside of the box and
leaves them questioning how things work and why. Apparently, children
absolutely love science!
I learned that, if I want to know how students
are thinking, I need to make the process visible.
This is done by questioning, documenting, and
using thinking routines, and by developing
a “culture” of thinking, which is achieved by
setting expectations and fostering the language
of thinking.
Ms. Hannah – English
• Students’ understanding is shown not when
they answer a question but ask a new one.
• Playing games isn’t necessarily learning; it
could just be memorizing stuff.
• Making headlines is a technique we can use
to check if students get the gist of a reading.
Mr. Emmanuel – Mathematics
• There are various ways to make thinking
visible in class. These help us significantly in
determining critical thinking moments of our
students.
• Learning should not be equated with scores.
• Interactive learning is better than rote /
worksheet type.
• Helping the kids to think means I, being the
teacher, must be able to encourage them to
participate in the thinking process. If they fail
to think, they fail to learn.
Mr. Jefri – Mathematics
• Tingkatan berpikir itu kompleks, tidak
berfokus pada tingkatan berpikir melainkan
pada pemahaman dalam pembelajaran.
• Berpikir adalah bersifat “kerja” bukanlah
emosional, konseptual, dan asosiatif.
• “Routines” akan membantu kita dalam
mengembangkan cara berpikir siswa di
dalam kelas.
• Training hari ini membantu saya dalam
mengembangkan konsep berpikir dan
implementasinya terhadap pembelajaran
di kelas.
Ms. Caecilia – Mathematics
• Latihan soal dan bermain games belum tentu
belajar atau berpikir.
• Kita berpikir pada saat kita bisa melihat pola,
membuat kesimpulan dan menyusun
argumen.
Mr. Albertinus – Mathematics
• Menilai siswa bukan hanya melalui nilai

Grades 4-6 Commemorate Christ’s Birth
Every year, the Joyous Christmas Celebration is always eagerly
awaited by children. This school year, Grades 4-6 celebrated Christmas
last 13 December at the auditorium at 12:30 to 14:00 pm. The Christmas
program was dominated by the drama, which talks about forgiveness
and being forgiven, a theme gleaned from Matthew 18:33-35.
The talented cast of the drama, which comprised of seven sixth
graders, brought life to the characters they played. Complementing the
drama were various performances such as: choir, ensemble, and modern
dances. The profound message of the central theme, ‘Salvation in the Son
(1 John 5:11-12)’ was beautifully shared by Ibu Endang to place emphasis
on the redemptive power of Christ’s birth.
Hopefully, this message will be lived out by the students in their
everyday life – thus making every day as magical as Christmas
Today I learned that learning isn’t just about
teaching students as much as we can or getting
them to answer correctly. Teaching and learning
is rather a way of provoking thoughts or
questions in students, which means facilitating
students to express their inner thoughts and
making sure they understand a lot of things
from others’ perspectives.
Ms. Anik – Social Studies
Berpikir adalah proses mencari ide-ide baru,
mengkoneksikannya dengan hal-hal yang
sudah diketahui sebelumnya dan juga dengan
hal-hal yang terjadi disekitar kita agar dapat
memunculkan suatu konsep/pengertian yang
baru untuk menjawab permasalahan yang ada,
dengan didasari alasan dan bukti yang relevan
dan nyata.
(Teacher quotes)
Mr. Ferry – ICT
Berpikir bukan hanya sekedar berhitung,
menentukan pilihan atau jawaban yang benar.
Berpikir haruslah bisa membuat kita untuk
menganalisis, mengkategorikan setiap analisis
dan menentukan konklusi/solusi yang tepat.
Lin Fang Lao Shi – Mandarin
Saya belajar untuk bertanya dan membuat
pertanyaan yang lebih mendalam dengan
menunjukkan ketertarikan dan kesenangan
saya sendiri terhadap pelajaran tersebut.
Terlebih lagi, sebagai guru, saya perlu fokus
mendengarkan dan memperhatikan siswa saat
bertanya sebab mendengarkan bukan hanya
berarti tidak berbicara.
Ms. Kate – Chemistry
• There is no learning if students are not
guided to think.
• As the teacher, I should be the model as a
thinker and learner.
Mr. Raditya – Biology
It is important for students not only to gain
knowledge but also to develop their thinking
skills.
Mr. Arman – Physics
• I was reminded of the importance of
“listening” and “questioning”.
• Different classroom contexts demand
different approaches/routines.
Ms. Raya – Physics
I was reminded about allowing students to
evaluate and take ownership of their own
thinking. However, as a teacher, I need to
provide them with enough challenging
opportunities to let my students think, share
their thoughts, and even provide correction or
improvement to their learning.
Mr. Elijah – Biology
• Learning requires a significant investment of
time.
• Both students and teachers bear responsibility
in nurturing learning routines and engaging
into positive learning experiences.
Ms. Vera – English
It’s important to connect the lesson from one
topic to another for the students to develop
a thorough thinking skill. Scores don’t always
determine their thinking skills and abilities;
there should be interactions to develop their
thinking skills.
Ms. Novie – English
Sometimes teachers forget that students do
not follow the process that teachers went
through in preparing the lesson. Therefore,
it is important for teachers to go through the
process of thinking with the students and not
just jump to the conclusion.
Mr. Ari – Sociology and History
Berpikir adalah suatu proses menguraikan
kompleksitas,
memecahkan
masalah,
menyederhanakan sebuat masalah sehingga
mudah dipahami.
Ms. Mariati – English
Giving lectures (teaching) and giving
assignments do not necessarily make
students think. Teachers need to use
various ‘routines’ to get students to think,
as opposed to just “follow instructions.”
Ms. Eileen – Biology
Today, I learned about the different
‘routines’ we can use in class (CSI (Color,
Symbol, Image), CEC (Connect-ExtendChallenge), Red Light, Yellow Light, and
What Makes You Say That?) and how we
use them to stimulate the students’ minds
to think and to develop critical thinking and
thus, learning.
Mr. Handy – Art & Design
Saya belajar mengenai strategi untuk
membudayakan cara belajar yang mampu
mengembangkan kemampuan siswa untuk
menggali ide-ide, gagasan, dan analisis
siswa terhadap topik-topik pembelajaran
yang ada. Siswa akan menjadi siswa yang
kritis.
Ms. Rosy – Arts and Craft
Hari ini saya belajar untuk menjadikan apa
yang dipikiran guru maupun siswa menjadi
nyata dan pentingnya untuk memberikan
kesempatan kepada para siswa untuk
berpikir, baik secara individu maupun
kelompok. Selain itu, mengajarkan siswa
untuk saling berinteraksi pun sangatlah
krusial karena interaksi diperlukan untuk
bertumbuh dan berkembang.
Ms. Ribka – ICT
Berpikir bukan hanya mengingat informasi.
Mr. Manat – Social Studies
Berpikir
sangatlah
penting
dalam
pembelajaran untuk mencapai pengertian.
Berpikir harus dibiasakan sehingga tercipta
suatu budaya berpikir dalam memecahkan
masalah. Karena pemecahan masalah
dengan emosi tanpa berpikir dapat
mengakibatkan munculnya masalah baru
yang lebih rumit. Budayakanlah berpikir
untuk setiap hal.
Mr. Marco – Religion
Learning is a result of our thinking.
