HALF MOON BAY WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2012 Captain’s Notes – Terry Mayes Hello Ladies, This month has flown by with lots of golf for all. Many congratulations to Lynne Cowan with her 5 th place finish in the California Women’s State Championship held at Chardonnay Golf Club. I was remiss in failing to congratulate Bonnie Gardiner in the June newsletter as she won the Palo Alto Women’s Golf Club Championship in May. My apologies. On July 5th, Mitz Alverson made her third career ACE on the 8th hole at Santa Clara Golf Course. Great job!! On July 26th, I was fortunate enough to make my first ACE at Eagle Ridge Golf Course on the 16 th hole. On July 31st, Teri Neidigh made her third ACE at the7th hole at San Jose Country Club at the Santa Clara County Women’s Championship. On July 30 and 31st, the Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Championship was held at San Jose Country Club. Mitz Alverson did an outstanding job as the Tournament Chair and put on a fine tournament. Many of the members at Half Moon Bay that have Santa Clara County affiliations played and supported this 70th annual tournament. Incredibly, 14 members of Half Moon Bay placed or won their flights. An outstanding performance by all. The winners are listed below. There is also a copy at the end of this Newsletter for those who can’t open attachments. I hope your have your foursome all lined up. Each member can bring one guest, so each foursome will have two members and two guests. The cost per participant is $275. Checks should be made out to HMBWGC. NOTE: Signups will be done on a first come first served basis. We will be using a single registration form for your foursome. You can send different checks but if you have a specific foursome in mind, you need to send in the information and money for your foursome in the same envelope. Remember you will need the guests’ addresses, home clubs and their GHIN numbers. You will not be registered until we have all of the information and money. The guests will be sent invitations. If you don’t have a foursome, I will pair you with another member and her guest if possible. If you need a guest, contact me and I may be able to find you one. The activities will begin at 11:00 AM on Monday with our Putting Contest. A box lunch will be provided before we head to our shotgun start on the Old Course at 1:00 PM. Tuesday morning we will have breakfast at 6:45 AM with an 8:00 AM shotgun start on the Ocean Course. If you wish to stay over we have discounts this year at both the Half Moon Bay Lodge and the Ritz. The Half Moon Bay Lodge has a rate of $139/ night plus taxes. Make your reservations before Sept 10 and be sure to mention the Pumpkin Invitational when you call them at 650.726.9000. If you wish to stay at the Rtiz, they will give us a rate of $199/night plus taxes and fees. To get this rate you must book your room through Kevin Niessner. You can reach him through the golf shop or directly at 650-712-2222 As always we definitely need your support in either becoming a hole sponsor or helping us find hole sponsors. The cost to be a two-day hole sponsor is $125. If a sponsor wishes to have their own sign at the hole, the cost is $300. The benefits are advertising at the holes and recognition in our program. Not to mention good will for the club! If you would like to do this or can help us find sponsors please contact Cathy Priest at [email protected] I can’t guarantee the weather, but I will remain optimistic that we will have a repeat of two years ago! Our Nadia's Gift Shotgun was an amazing success. All in Nadia's name and full of her spirit the day was just perfect. 80 players dressed in their best "pinks" came out and spent the day hoping they would not be the person to lose the pink ball! Fun, fun, fun. Did I mention the raffle and that we raised $500. dollars more than last year for Nadia's Gift? All totaled we sent off to Nadia's cancer research foundation $3186.00. Wow! I was so proud of our club and how the whole day went. Check out the winners on Golffusion! Thank you so much to all who donated our prizes, those who came and played and to our entire club for their support. HMBWGC ROCKS! Huge thank you to Peter Van Camp for his support of our efforts and supplying us those wonderful Titlest "Velocity" golf balls. Thank you so much Peter! More big golf around the corner. September we will host some major golf competition. Right off is our "Luau Guest Day". This tournament promises to be as much fun as last year so sign up early to not miss out. Following the guest day shotgun is our club championship. We again will have three flights: championship flight (for the club champion), challenger flight (open handicaps), and our endeavor flight (all players over 60 years young). Three days of wonderful competition amongst fellow club members. Commit early and jump on in. And then lastly we'll have our Annual Meeting Shotgun when we will play the ABCD tournament which was rained out in April. Such a fabulous tournament, we just had to fit it in somehow. A very full September to say the least. Rest up from summer vacations and plan on being very busy in September at the Moon. See you there! Marilyn Dickman Half Moon Bay Women’s Golf Club Newsletter – August 2012 Page 3 HALF MOON BAY WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2012 Team Play – Mitz Alverson Get your games in! Just to remind our team players, you have two months left to complete your 12 game credits for eligibility for Team Play in 2013. Most of you are right on pace now. The club championship will count as 3 games, of course. This requirement applies to everyone, including over 70's and Board members. Our Valley Team scored 1 win, 1 tie, and 1 loss to finish the month with a tenuous hold on First Place-just one point ahead of powerhouse Palo Alto Hills. Our members out scrambling for Valley points in July: Ginia Andersen, Fran Dogen, Danuta Eustice, Lynn Flick, Nancy Humpal, Sally Lau, Kathy Lee, Maya Leonard, Martha McLaughlin, Kay Sabin, Co-Capt Chris Thoel, Pam Tompkins, Captain Ilene Turtletaub, and Sylvia Yarian. Danuta seems to be our July MVP, winning all three matches big. Everyone wants to be Danuta's partner now. 2012 league play is nearly over. Just two August matches remaining for Valley, plus one Winter League rain make-up at Green Hills on September 20. Valley League finishes with a "Fun Day," on Monday, August 27. Clubs are mixed into 2-best ball teams for this social event. Everyone who played in the Valley League this season is eligible to play. And, our Golden Gate League Championship Team will meet the other league champions at the Central Bay League Championship at Callippe Preserve on October 15. We hold the trophy for this play-off for 2011, and will do our best to bring it back with us. Membership – Kay Sabin Please change the address of Barbara Verderame to: 206 Mendocino Way Redwood City, Ca 94065 ***MEMBERSHIP ALERT ALERT ALERT*** Attached is the membership renewal for 2013. If you know of anyone who is interested in joining our club please let me know and I will send a new member form. Thanks and happy summer. Kay Rules – Teri Neidigh With the Club Championship coming up soon, there are a few rules to keep in mind which could be costly to you. There is a 2 stroke penalty if you violate these rules and they also require you to rectify Half Moon Bay Women’s Golf Club Newsletter – August 2012 Page 4 HALF MOON BAY WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2012 your mistake before teeing off on the next hole, or in the case of the last hole, leaving the green. If not rectified, you will be disqualified. 11-4b: playing from outside the teeing ground, 2 stroke penalty, you must replay from within the teeing ground, if you don’t rectify before teeing off on the next tee or the if it is the last hole of the round you leave the putting green without declaring your intent to correct the mistake, you are DQ’d. 11-5: playing from the wrong teeing ground, the same provisions as in 11-4b above apply. 15-3b: playing a wrong ball: if you make a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball you incur a 2 stroke penalty, you must correct your mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the rules. If you fail to correct your mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or in the case of the last hole of the round, fail to declare your intent to correct the mistake before leaving the putting green, you are DQ’d. 20-7c: playing from a wrong place: you make a stroke from a wrong place, you incur a 2 stroke penalty, you must play out the hole from the wrong place without correcting your error, provided you have not committed a serious breach, i.e. gained a significant advantage. If you believe you may have committed a serious breach, announce you intend to play a second ball per Rule 3-3, return to the area that is in compliance with the rule and complete the hole. You must advise the Committee of your actions before signing and returning your scorecard. Failure to advise the Committee you played a second ball under Rule 3-3 will result in a disqualification. The Committee will review the circumstances and determine if a significant advantage was gained. If they determine no significant advantage was gained, you will incur a 2 stoke penalty. Common theme: Failure to correct before teeing off on the next hole, or in the case of the last hole, leaving the green without announcing your intention to correct the error, will result in disqualification…..Mark you ball so you don’t accidentally confuse it with your fellow competitors and if in doubt, announce your intention to identify your ball to your marker, mark the balls position and examine to determine if it is your ball.
