-- BUYS, BOYCE -The family groups represented in this collection may not be complete, because information was entered bit by bit as I found it
or happened upon it; I have not done any systematic research on these families. Because they do not compose whole family
genealogies, these listings are arranged differently from most genealogical records or histories. Each listing is a family group,
and is arranged and filed alphabetically under the name of the head of the family.
Names are generally in alphabetical order (disregarding spelling variations and middle names), then in approx. chronological
order. The first sorting is by surname (mixing together any and all spelling variations), then by given name, then by approximate birthdate (when known) in approximate chronological order. For easier reference, surnames in headings are grouped together under the most common spelling usage that evolved in this geographical location, regardless of individualistic
spellings in the records themselves. Cross references are used in most cases where surname spellings substantially vary.
Within the quoted records, the individual spellings have been (mostly) retained because they sometimes provide clues (although in general—but with exceptions—they seem to largely reflect the record keeper's particular orthography and not always, at this early period, any special family preference). Those interested can see the variety and evolvement of a particular
name’s spelling and the interesting and sometimes amusing attempts at phonetic reproduction. Keep in mind that before
names and spellings were standardized, records reflected the individualistic whim of the particular recorder (often two different spellings of the same name within the same document). In addition, all records were handwritten, and sometimes deciphering a handwritten name in early records can be quite challenging! So expect to search under all possibilities of spelling
(for both surnames and given names).
Given names are grouped together without regard for middle initials or middle names. Because middle names and/or initials
are sometimes used, sometimes not used in various records, it seemed simplest to arrange entries as if the middle names or
initials did not exist. Usually all variations of a given name are grouped together as though spelled one way: Jan, Johannes,
John, etc. are all grouped as one (but also look under the other forms).
Sources and references are included with each "family" grouping, but may or may not include sources that are cited (or are
obvious, such as baptismal records, etc.) within the narrative or listing itself.
As with any compiled genealogical record, researchers should regard this information as leads and clues, and should verify all
data with independent research.

Jan Corneliszen Buys, aka Jan Damen, was the nephew as well as the adopted son of Jan Jansen Damen.
Ida/Eybe Lubbertse of Fort Orange was the sister of Tryntje Lubberts who m. Hendrick Jansen Oosteroom.
In the Brooklyn Ref Ch record of their (2) marriagem they were: Jan Corneliszen Buys, widower of Ybe Lubberts, to
Femmetie Jans, widow of Teunis Nysse, with certificate “from Breuckelen.”
Femmetje Jans, also known as Phebe Faelix, came from Charleston, England. She was the daughter of John Seals, who
married Maria Roberts, or Robertson. John Seals was an Englishman from Devonshire (the name being written Jan Celes on
Dutch Colonial records), who came from New England as early as 1638 to New Amsterdam, on which date he was a planter
on Manhattan Island.
Jan Cornelissen Buys received a grant of land in or near Pembrepogh (Jersey City/Bayonne) in December 1654. Indians
raided, burned the bouweries, and killed and captured many of the inhabitants on the west side of the Hudson on 15 Sep
1655.
On 1 May 1656 before the Court of Schepens and Burgomasters of New Amsterdam, “Jan Corns Buys, alias Jan Damen,
and Lubber Gysbertsen widow, request permission to tap, as they have been driven from their houses by the last trouble with
the Indians.” The petitioners' request was granted. (The two were Lubbert Gysbertszen [Van Blarcom’s] widow and son-inlaw.)
Jan Cornelis was living in Midwout in 1663. He was known as "Jan the Soldier."
On 8 June 1667, Jan Cornelise Buys, widower of Femmentien Jans, deceased, declares the surviving children of
Femmenetje Jans by Teunis Niessen deceased, to be Eelsyen Tuenes, Femmetien, Jan, Denies, and Corneles Tuenesen. (Flatbush Town Records, Liber D, p. 101).
On 24 April 1668 Declaration of Jan Cornelesen Buys, widower of Eeybe Lubbers, deceased, by whom he had issue: Corneles, Handerickyen, Tryntyen, Jan, Diefverien, Nelien. (Flatbush Town Records, Liber D., p. 128)
On 19 Aug 1675, Jan Cornelise Dame was listed in the Assessment Roll of the Real and Personal Property in Boswyck. He
owned 1 poll, 4 horses, 6 cows, 1 ditto of 3 years, 2 ditto of 2 yrs., 3 ditto of 1 yr., 16 sheep, 8 hogs, 28 morgens of land and
valley, with a total value of £180.2
In their joint will, Jan Buys and Willemtie Tyssen of Breucklyn in Kings County dated 29 Nov 1686; probated 28 Jan
1689/90. Half of whole estate to children procured by Eybe Lubberse, Femmetie Janse and Willemtie Thyssen, and children
procured by Roeloff Willemse, in equal shares. Children of Willemtie Thyssen, Machtiltie and Willem Roelofse. Hillitie and
Thys Buys, children of the testator, To William Roeloffse 100 gilders wampum. Residue of whole estate to children of testators. Witnesses: Jeronimus Rapale, Hendrick Sleght. (recorded Liber I of Conveyances, p. 203)

According to family tradition, about the time of the Rev. War John seems to have gone to Ossabaw Is. GA and worked as a
plantation manager. Lena is supposed to have died and is buried there. After Lena's death, about 1779, he is supposed to have
returned to Hunterdon Co., NJ, where he left the children with his sisters. He went off working and returned from time to
time. He married Elizabeth Gordon and his son, Henry (my ancestor) married Elizabeth's sister: Margaret Gordon. They were
the daughters of Samuel Gordon and Mary Craig. Henry married Margaret: 24 Dec. 1800, prob. just before the family moved
to Sodus, Wayne Co., NY. Henry Buys died 27 Feb 1866 in Erie Co., PA. He is buried in McClellan's Corners Cem., Erie Co.,
PA: gravestone: Henry Buys, d. Feb. 27, 1866 ae 88 years old.1

They had major difficulties during the Revolution, when they were accused, tried, and convicted of certain felonies, of aiding robbers, and of receiving stolen goods.
