From the Editor’s Desk
A warm welcome to Dear Readers!!
Toastmasters is an Ocean- an ocean of communication skills, an ocean of leadership
skills, an ocean of creative explorers.
Just as an ocean is bland and unexciting without its waves, so is a club without its
wave-riding members, the members who have fearlessly dived into the unfathomable depths and have risen up, wearing the cape of confidence and attitude, and as
these members shine they also leave their deep footprints that other can follow and
explore new beauty. With this thought Ebullience comes with a theme Waves Footprints in Ocean. It brings you the diversified footprints from the members
TM Dipti
who have tasted the happiness of embarking the wave-ridden journey.

My Toastmasters Journey….
I
can now call myself a Competent Communicator, after completing the 10 Speeches that are required to
attain this level. 15 months back when I started the Competent Communicator journey I was not sure if I would be
able to complete the required 10 speeches.
I had joined the Toastmasters largely out of compulsion
than passion. So I started the journey involuntarily. First 3
speeches of mine were not practiced. I used to prepare
them while travelling from my home to office in the bus. I
managed to complete the initial speeches by paying little
attention to the feedback being provided by experienced
speakers. However when I read the objectives of CC4, I
realized that there is something in Toastmasters, after listening to some speakers who were at the final stages of CC
journey I realized that Toastmasters can really help you to
become a better communicator.
That was a moment of change in my journey. From that
point till the time I completed my CC10, I prepared well
for my speeches and did the homework based on the objectives provided for each speech. I slowly started realizing
that I too can deliver good speeches and more than that
preparation for each speech as what topic to choose, what
to write, how to add humor, how to inculcate an effective
body language and many more really helped me to improve my overall skills.
Today, I have the confidence to talk before 100 people
without any fear and without any stammer. From a naïve
person who hardly had the courage to stand up and speak
before people, Toastmasters had made a difference not only in my attitude but to my personality as a whole. Now I
pay more attention to what I speak and how I speak. I am
able to articulate my thoughts and views in a better fashion
TM Vaidyanathan
Competent Communicator
than earlier despite the recipient are my superiors or
my juniors.
My presentation skills has improved and now I am
not only able to make better presentations but also
able to deliver them more emphatically than before. It
has not only helped me in communication but also in
organization and collaboration. Various CC roles like
Grammarian, Evaluator, and Table Topic Master each
have their own unique specialties that help you in
your overall improvement. Many of the associates
who run the Toastmaster are juniors but there is a lot
that can be learnt from them especially with respect to
Toastmasters, basically the energy and passion the
moment you enter the Toast master arena you get infected by it.
However CC is just a step in the right direction but to
become a very good communicator and orator requires lot of practice and that‘s what I am doing now.
Toastmasters teaches you how to drive a car safely
and tactfully but your practice on what you had learnt
makes you a better driver. So I end saying join Toastmasters to improve not only your communication
skills but overall you.
You can achieve more than what you have achieved
now, Toastmasters is the journey that can help you
reach there.

Practice to Expertise
I
was part of my school‘s 4x100 meters relay team. My team was selected to
represent our zone at the district level and we started practicing just two
days before the competition; we ended up being unsuccessful on the race day.
Little did I know then that the race day is no different from the practice sessions
that we do. We as a team should have started the practice much earlier and not
just two days before the race; yes, practice hard and long to the level that the perTM Srivatsan
formance comes naturally to you.
Over the years I realize that importance of practice which is scientifically explained with facts in Malcolm. C.
Gladwell‗s book Outliers where the secret of exceptionally successful personalities or teams is uncovered. The author
arrives at a number of hours of practice (> 10,000 hours of practice) that is required for any to excel at what they are
doing. Bill Gates was a prodigy child, a gifted child – This is what we say when we discuss about how he could become
the richest in the world with his computer skills.
Gladwell uncovers an aspect that Bill Gates has spent more than 10,000 hours of computer programming before he really became successful. We all know Sachin Tendulkar was a gifted child and batting came so naturally to him. The fact is
apart from his gifted skills; Sachin Tendulkar had more hours of practice behind him before he catapulted on to the big
stage. Be it computer programming or playing cricket, the 10,000 hours of practice rule applies!
Where ever we go today, we demand we get the best service that is available. We go to service our car, we want the
best mechanic to service our car; we go to a hair salon, we want the best hair-dresser to do our hair; and the list goes on.
What makes them the best and most sought after, it‘s only the hours of practice that they have put on their job and the
quality experience behind them that makes do their job better and be the preferred choice for their customers.
We nurture different ambitions - a writer, a speaker, a technologist, an athlete, a
cricket player, a photographer, a chef and so on. Spend time on the things that
you really want to do and grow your expertise. No matter if the world doesn‘t see
you as a Sachin or Bill Gates, you will have the satisfaction that you have given it
your best and you will appreciate that you were privileged to have spent on so
many hours on the things which you were passionate about.

ast week, I was driving with
my family in the Padi area in
Chennai. Songs of A.R. Rahman were

relatively new to me. I had asked directions from a relative who asked me to
come through the main road to reach
his house. However, I thought I will use
my (―so called‖) intuitions and take one
of the cross roads to get to my destination faster. I drove my car into one of
those narrow streets which was just 15
feet wide. Half way into that street, I
found a water tanker filling water on
the black water tank erected in the
street. People surrounded the tanker
like bees in a bee hive. There was absolutely no space for me to overtake the
water tank. I thought I would take reverse and get to my destination
through the main road. To my surprise,
a few cars followed me into the street
and were right behind me. My car was
pretty much jammed in between, with
water tanker on the front and with
loads of trucks and cars behind me. I
had to wait for nearly 15 mins for the
water tanker to finish its job and leave
the street. I had to pay a price for taking
a short cut on that day. I reached my
destination 30 minutes late.

Best Of Best – An Interview with the Besties
BEST TOASTMASTER
1) How would you explain TITMAS club to someone who doesn’t know
about it?
TITMAS Club is a
A place for you to learn the art of communication and leadership skills.
A place which will transform you to a better professional, a better human.
A place not just for people lagging behind in public speaking, but a scope to
improvise even for a proficient speaker
A stage where you can commit mistakes and learn.
A place where you make lot of friends.
Just become a member and I am sure you will feel the change.
2) Being awarded as Best TM means
you are already a competent speaker &
leader. What according to you are the
qualities new members can imbibe
from TMs journey?
We members of TITMAS by listening to
other speeches improve our observation and listening skills, by preparing
speech scripts we learn written skills,
through mentors and evaluators we
learn to accept feedback in positive way
and improvise in forth coming speeches, by taking up roles in session we
learn managing and leadership skills,
by mentoring and evaluating we learn
to observe and give feedback, by delivering the speech we learn to overcome
stage fear, improvise our delivery, body
language, eye contact, confidence, vocal
variety, grammar ,time management
etc.
4. What has been your most successful experience in speech making &
what according to you one should
keep in mind before scripting any
speech?
For my CC6 speech which demands
vocal variety, I choose Bermuda triangle, I transformed the training room
to a flight and I stepped into the shoes
of Air Hostess and was narrating the
mystery of Bermuda triangle when
the flight was about to cross it. The
speech really came out well and I had
a chance to identify my imagination
skills. I am a person who is poor in memorizing and delivering it, hence I take
enough time to choose topics which are close to my heart and deliver it with
confidence. My suggestions for fellow toastmasters would be, choose a topic you
are passionate about and no matter you forget the script in middle of your
speech delivery, you still will have points to speak. You will feel more confident
during your speech delivery because you are going to speak something which
you are passionate about..
TM Pavithra

3) Describe your journey in the
club ?
I became a member of TITMAS in
July 2012, and my first speech delivery was on 13th July 2012 at Sholinganallur TCS Campus. I served as
SAA of the club during the period
Jan 2013 - June 2013, As an VP-E from
July 2013 to Dec 2013.At each step, at
each role, at each session, at each contest, I learned to become more responsible. If I had to explain my entire TITMAS journey a page is not
enough, probably a book would suit.
TITMAS has given a lot to me and it
is time that I do something for this
club. Learning and Improving are the
treasures I acquired at each step and
the journey continues..
I choose Bermuda
triangle, I transformed the training
room to a flight and I
stepped into the
shoes of an air hostess ……..

5) Recently you completed ACB, how complex was this
advance level journey?
I choose storytelling and professional speaker manual for
my ACB journey. Storytelling made me think in terms of a
child and I started delivering speeches assuming that listeners are children. Professional speaker manual was really challenging, each speech required a minimum of 15-20
minutes, and each project demanded a different delivery
from motivational to sales training speech, from keynote
address to professional seminar and I should say professional speaker manual made me realize my leadership
skills and transformed me to a better, confident and a professional speaker.
6) What are the qualifying criteria you think is necessary
before choosing any advance level topics?

Choose the manuals which you are passionate about. If
you love telling stories to your kid, choose story telling

W
inning a club level contest and participating in an area level was a gratifying, enjoyable & a great learning
experience. Though I did not win at the Area level, but I did not lose either. Rather I learned more in a
month than I ever could have dreamed. At the contest, I delivered stories from my life, shared the stage with eight
amazing people and made friendships not only with them but many other TMs from different clubs that I will always
relish. This contest not only helped me to improve my speech, but more importantly I heard some really inspiring stories and some great speeches which had remarkable takeaways.
Some important Do‘s and Don‘ts that I would like to share are:
1) Delivery (i.e. body gestures, eye contact, effective vocal varieties & correct pauses) of a speech is as important as
the content of a speech. This is something my speech lacked and probably got hurt because of it.
2) Choose topics (personal experience, success or failure stories) that are close to your heart and has an inspiring
takeaways.
3) Try to uncover humor in your speeches. It reduces boredom and brings out a sense of optimism in your speech.
I totally agree that the most critical discriminator between those who win and those who do not is preparation. Last
but not the least, by competing in the speech contests you will challenge yourself, you will grow, you will incorporate
everything you learnt during usual TMs sessions and you will realize many amazing things about yourself that you
were once ignorant.
The contest result might turn out negative but I can bet you will be a winner! Yes!! I am now a more energized and confident TM than ever before.
M
y contest experience..
Hmmmm...
For the record, this is my first International Speech and TT contest. Before I
went to the Area contest, I knew 2 things.
First - Toastmasters are very good speakers.
Second - A good speech by a good orator has the power to change and inspire the world.
TM Karthikeyan
Runner up Club Speech Contest
But after competing at the contest, I discovered that "I" can be a good speaker as well and
"I" can inspire minds of few people with my speech if not the world. That‘s what competing with a fierce band of orators at a Toastmasters speech contest can do to you.
Its helps to discover your true potential.

Leadership Skill : To Praise
A
successful relationship is the key
to success. We are not God
and we don't reach heights
by ourselves. And one of
the important ways to grow
successful in any relationship is to be life-giving to
others. Every individual
TM Dipti
we meet, we either give
life to or take life from them. There are 2 kinds of people
one who encourages us and when we are with them we
feel determined and strong. Second ones are the others
with them we feel shattered and torn down.
Is there someone you know who is joyful? Hard-working?
Honest? Then let them know how much you appreciate
that in them. You can do it with a word, or a card, or a
phone call.
Example: “Denver your hard
work had really set a good example for others and I want
you to know how much I appreciate that in you.”
Successful people are people who have mastered the art
of developing and honing others up.
Example: “Sue you have a
brilliant ability to communicate the vision and mission
about the project and that
helps all of the rest of us out in
our roles and tasks. Thanks for
that. It is greatly acknowledged by everyone”
One of the ways we develop people is to praise them.
Praising people holds a power in itself. When you praise
someone, things change in your relationship. Remember a
time when someone appreciated you for something what
you have done? It was great, wasn‘t it?
You probably tend to like that person more after they
praise you. I am not asking to praise people for the sake of
praising. I am talking about honestly picking the positive
attributes, traits and action of others around you,
acknowledge them and appreciate them. Don't lie to people. If they have done something wrong, correct it, but
when they do something right, Praise It!
Acknowledge and Appreciate— Mantra to be a good
Leader
May be it you personal life or professional life make it as a
goal to praise at least three people a day. Or perhaps you
can try to praise everyone you come in contact with. It
will take pain and effort, but it is possible, and things become easier and life becomes smoother with just few
words of appreciation and praise. First for others, then for
you!
Benefits when you praise people:
Growth of your relationship
Growth of your leadership skills
Growth of your power to influence others
Determined loyalty from the person you praise.

reer. But what does enhance mean? It is growing
from a solider to a commander in army, a clerk to a manager in a bank and from a teacher to a principal in a
school. At the end of the day, it is the course of a journey
we embark upon to transform our self from being led to
leading others. But it is easier said than done. After all it
is not as simple as changing the order of the words. The
skill set completely differs.
A leader needs to have skills like decision making, communicating, convincing etc. Unfortunately we don`t have
any class room teaching which helps us to hone these
skills. In our schools we were taught languages but not
communication. So we are in need of a school which
teaches these skills. Regrettably we don`t have any school
of that sort.

If you ask Google this question, it says "Toastmasters International" within microseconds. So Toastmasters is one
of its kind which provides a platform to learn, improve
and master communication and leadership skills.
The tiny tot went: "When I eat I mess up."
The elder replied: "O, that makes two of us."
The Club provides each and every member an opportunity to stand up, open up their thoughts. It is a place where
we are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them.
To put it in a different manner it is a school which is going to teach the things which most of us missed during
our initial schooling. It`s a school which makes to learn a
lot rather than making us to memorize. So all those who
wish to climb the career ladder and have success
throughout the tenure join toastmasters to improve your
own skills, to have a better career. Importantly, skills cannot be cultivated overnight.
So what are you waiting for?

And the elder added: "O, I do the same."
On the tot told him: "I sob a lot."
"O, not only you," answered gramps to the tot.
"And what's totally bad," the tiny tot told,
"I think mom and dad don't love me at all."
While grandpa simply, pitiably smiled,
then said: "O, I understand, my child."

Son: "I was the only one who could answer a question."
Not only did the thieves clean out the

Mother: "Oh, really? What was the question?"
Son: "Who threw the eraser at the principal?"
Just as the robbers got to the pair, one

Experience - The Chair
T
he word ―THE CHAIR‖ sounds very powerful, so were the ROLE and the
RESPONSIBILITIES.
Yes The Chair..
It was really exciting, interesting and surprising experience to play THE ROLE in the
International Speech and TT Contest. I share my experience on different aspects of
responsibilities I came across.
TM Prabhakar
The Chair– Intentional Speech and TT
Contest Club Level
On Planning:
Different people, different personalities, different moods and different schedules –
Uniting all under one roof for the event were really enterprising and challenging. Thus began the uphill process of planning.
On breakdowns and break trough's:
On Participants
Topics selected for International Speeches were awesome
and so as it for TT as well. Everyone had a nice time, enjoying the speeches.
Last minute dropouts were the key breakdown. However a breakthrough was made by having proper alternate
plans. As all were expected moves.
On Volunteers:
The first action item in the to-do list of the chair was
booking the conference room. It was done on priority.
On last moment, we found out that the room what we
booked was not the room we had planned for the event.
We had not cross checked on the venue. It was another
breakdown. It made the situation panicky. With the help
of volunteers, I made alternate arrangements to divert
the overwhelming, enthusiastic crowd to the new room.
All the heads had turned up. The hall was filled with
Toastmasters and Guests. Thus achieved our another
breakthrough
On being A CHAIR:
I got helping hand from many Toastmasters who were
working with me in parallel to make the event a success.
There was not even a single moment that I felt I was
alone. I always saw great minds working with me on their
best to make the event a success.
It was a great honor to be the chair for the International
Speech and Table Topics contest.
Being a chair had made me to organize a successful international event, believe in people, improve as an individual, never lose hope in spite of the tough situations and
motivate others by inspiring them.
On Judges:
Appointing judges was handed over to an efficient TM,
who did his best to pick the Chief Judge and got handful
of proficient judges for the event.
Having judges not knowing to the crowd was a challenge. But worked out and practiced well in such a way
that most of them could not make out who the judges
were.
On last moment, we found out that the
room what we booked was not the
room we had planned for the
event……..

and induced the thirst to know more. Be it making the flyers, maintaining the website,
editing the newsletter, keeping the club active on social networking site, I enjoyed every bits and pieces of the PR activity. This role has helped to research me and re introduced me as a person whom I was never before. My sincere gratitude to the club for

VICE PRESIDENT EDUCATION
Within small span of time I contested for Vice President Membership. I was very
fortunate for not being elected at that moment because I was unaware of the nuances of roles and responsibilities of a
Club Officer. At the same time I was unfortunate for missing the designation of Vice President. Next 6 months passed
as 6 minutes and I got another chance. This time I have contested with full preparation, half knowledge and no plan. I
had given nomination for position of 3 roles and prepared campaign speech for VP Membership.
Truly talking I was aloof of the order the election is conducted. My thought was if I miss VP Membership, I can go and
try for VP Education. As the contest for President the one with highest role finished the call for second highest role VPE
was made and I was one of the nominees. I had to deliver my campaign speech for VPE but I had prepared for VPM,
that moment I managed and gave impromptu campaign speech for the role of VPE. To my surprise I was elected as the
Vice President Education of TITMAS Club
The management work as VPE started right from my campaign speech and is still continuing with my role and will
continue further. It taught me people management, work management, stress management most importantly time
management.

PRESIDENT
In this brief but eventful passage of learning and growing as a president of this
club, I had the luxury of being part of some wonderful team work by our dedicated Excomm team and fellow members in organizing the momentous second
anniversary celebration, speech contest, special events like CC1 marathon and
those wonderful sessions week after week.
I am sure this experience would help me improve myself and help others to
grow. I always believe that each one of us is a leader but not until we practice it
in the real world!! Toastmasters provide every bit of opportunity to groom the
leader in you and the Spirit of leadership is best felt when you serve as a club
officer in a Toastmaster club.
