As a place to relax, ‘hang out’ and live the good life the island is unsurpassed. After you set foot on Gozo, you’ll know why you need more than just a day to savour it’s leisurely charms. The more you enjoy your visit to Gozo, the more likely you are to return, and to recommend the island to others. If you are intrigued by this beautiful island’s ability to create ‘Gozo fanatics’ like ourselves, then plan a visit. We always stay for more than just a day. It’s the secret hideaway of all Maltese. Which is why we would prefer to leave it undiscovered by you. But it’s in our nature to share the best we have with visitors. 3 Contents 23/5/07 16:15 Page 1 M M A A L L T T A A Mario Zahra Editor Welcome to the June issue of Events. As summer approaches and the climate gets warmer, the Maltese islands get busier and livelier than ever with colourful events, such as village feasts and open-air parties. This time of the year needs no introduction to tourists visiting Malta & Gozo as many keep coming over and over agian. For the young-at-heart there are two international concerts, Bryan Admas & Carreras while discos and parties are not short at this time of the year. For those that like culture & folklore there is no better season to visit a village feast, with some of them celebrating all week, with band marches, fireworks, processions and more. Watch out for the Feast of the month on the 29th June. This public holiday “St. Peter & St. Paul”, hosts a number of activities not to be missed. Upper Barrak k a Gardens This is one of two gardens, one named Upper Barrakka and the other Lower Barrakka, facing the Grand Harbour in Valletta. Both offer a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour. The Upper Barrakka Gardens offer the best view since they’re more centered and at a much higher level. The garden was the gift of an eighteenth-century knight. The Anglican Garrison Church partly intrudes upon it.The garden is built on top of a demibastion. The Grand Harbour side of the Gardens is surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. The view of the Harbour from this vantage point is magnificent and many people spend hours taking in the site. Lower Barrak k a Gardens The gardens are part of St Christopher’s Bastion and have a view of the harbour. At their center is a small Greek-style folly built in memory of Governor Sir Alexander Ball, who led the siege against the French in 1800 and subsequently became Britain’s first civil commissioner of Malta. The French during the 1798-1800 siege cultivated these gardens, like many of Valletta’s open spaces.
