Captivating Gozo!
Small and beautiful as it is, Gozo cannot be seen in just one day.
As a place to relax, ‘hang out’ and live the good life the island
is unsurpassed. After you set foot on Gozo, you’ll know why
you need more than just a day to savour it’s leisurely charms.
The more you enjoy your visit to Gozo, the more likely you
are to return, and to recommend the island to others.
If you are intrigued by this beautiful island’s ability to
create ‘Gozo fanatics’ like ourselves, then plan a visit.
We always stay for more than just a day. It’s the secret
hideaway of all Maltese. Which is why we would prefer
to leave it undiscovered by you. But it’s in our nature to
share the best we have with visitors.

Editor
Welcome to the June issue
of Events. As summer
approaches and the climate
gets warmer, the Maltese
islands get busier and livelier
than ever with colourful events,
such as village feasts and
open-air parties. This
time of the year needs no
introduction to tourists visiting
Malta & Gozo as many keep
coming over and over agian.
For the young-at-heart there
are two international concerts,
Bryan Admas & Carreras while
discos and parties are not
short at this time of the year.
For those that like culture &
folklore there is no better
season to visit a village feast,
with some of them celebrating
all week, with band marches,
fireworks, processions and
more. Watch out for the Feast
of the month on the 29th June.
This public holiday “St. Peter &
St. Paul”, hosts a number of
activities not to be missed.

ST. JOHN’S CO-CATHEDRAL AND MUSEUM
St. John’s Co-Cathedral, formerly the Conventual Church of the
Order of St John, is historically and artistically one of the most
important monuments on the island. It was built between 1573 and
1577 to the design of Gerolamo Cassar, chief engineer of the Order.
The “Beheading of St. John”, Caravaggio’s masterpiece, hangs in the
Oratory. Inside the Cathedral is a hymn of light and colour to the
glory of the ‘Monks in Armour’ and their patron Saint John. Scenes
from the life of the Saint are depicted by the famous artist Mattia
Preti along the whole length of the ceiling. The side chapels serving
the various langue into which the Order was divided are of magnificent artistry. In the crypt there are buried the Grand Masters of
the Order who died before St. John’s was built. The museum houses a unique collection of Flemish tapestries, silver objects and church

Night Life
Paceville
St Julian’s and Paceville are Malta’s
main nightlife areas. Paceville lies
on the hill between Spinola Bay
and St George’s Bay. It is the
scene of Malta’s year-round
nightlife and offers leisure, entertainment and dining to suit all
tastes. There is plenty to choose
from: Paceville has the latest in
club DJ music, as well as piano
bars, an elegant casino and
superb restaurants. The casino is
in Villa Dragonara, once the private home of a 19th century
Maltese aristocrat.
St. Julian’s
St Julian’s is now an extension of
Sliema although it started off as a
small fishing port, based on
Spinola and Balluta Bays. Like
Sliema, it is now a major residential and tourist centre, and home
to some of Malta’s newest hotels.
St Julian’s merges with Paceville,
Malta’s main nightlife centre
where there are clubs, casinos
and numerous restaurants, cafes
and bars. Picturesque Spinola
Bay is still used by fishermen
18
16:34
whose traditional boats are
housed just below the restaurants. The bay is particularly
attractive at night and as a venue
for open-air dining.
Casino
Ever yone has to have an
evening’s flutter once in a
while. And there is no better
time than on holiday. Malta
has several excellent casinos.
Choose from an elegant colonial-style villa, an ultra modern
hotel complex, or a restored
17th centur y, harbour-side
palace. All provide great
enter tainment whether you’re
new to the tables or have
tried your luck before.

If you’re a music buff or just simply wish to have a special, musical
night out, you’ll be spoilt for
choice. The Islands not only host
several major musical festivals, but

events. (see page 12)
Folk & Band Music
Band music is one of the most
popular traditions on the
Islands. Ever y town and village
has at least one, usually two,
band clubs. Band music is taken
seriously here, and is the mainstay
of
many
open-air
events.The highlight of the year
for band music is the parish

music, you’ll find a variety of
band marches and performances throughout the year in various locations. (see page 15)

Gardens
San Anton Gardens
Definately the most popular of
all gardens in the Maltese
islands. This botanical garden
found in Attard was laid out by
Grand Master Antoine de Paule
to complement his summer
residence “San Anton Palace”,
today used as the president’s
residence. You can relax in this
garden that opens from 9am to
5pm daily and enjoy the lovely
duck ponds and fountains in the
heart of this peaceful place.
Upper Barrak k a
Gardens
This is one of two gardens, one
named Upper Barrakka and the
other Lower Barrakka, facing
the Grand Harbour in Valletta.
Both offer a panoramic view of
the Grand Harbour. The Upper
Barrakka Gardens offer the
best view since they’re more
centered and at a much higher
level. The garden was the gift of
an eighteenth-century knight.
The Anglican Garrison Church
partly intrudes upon it.The garden is built on top of a demibastion. The Grand Harbour
side of the Gardens is surrounded by a wrought-iron
fence. The view of the Harbour
from this vantage point is magnificent and many people spend
hours taking in the site.
Lower Barrak k a
Gardens
The gardens are part of St
Christopher’s Bastion and have a
view of the harbour. At their
center is a small Greek-style folly
built in memory of Governor Sir
Alexander Ball, who led the
siege against the French in 1800
and subsequently became
Britain’s first civil commissioner
of Malta. The French during the
1798-1800 siege cultivated
these gardens, like many of
Valletta’s open spaces.
Hastings Gardens
From the National Museum of
Fine Arts, it is well worth taking
a stroll through the nearby
Hastings Gardens, named after
a former Governor General,
the Marquess of Hastings
(1824-26).
A rgotti Botanical
Gardens
In 1805 the British governor
appointed a Carmelite friar,
Malta’s first professor of natural
history. He assembled the
plants in Floriana’s Mall and 50
years later they were moved to
the site of the present Argotti
Gardens, then the preserve of a
deceased knight.
Buskett Gardens
No more than 2kms from
Dingli Cliffs, sitting under the
watchful eye of Cardinal Grand
Master de Verdalle’s summer
retreat, are Buskett Gardens.
Panoplies of foliage spread their
shade over the valley floor, providing a welcome respite
against the heat of summer.
There are orange and cypress
trees, irregular cacti, leguminous
carobs, aromatic firs and the
Judas tree, which foretells
Easter with its pink blossom
(this is said to be the tree from
which Judas hung himself).
