Dear All
We are now well and truly into the exam season and I
am so pleased that students and staff are making so
much effort to help our girls fulfil their potential. Please
contact us if you feel there is any additional help we
can offer or if you have any concerns about your
daughter during what can be a stressful time.
We will continue to try and make FBA a fantastic place
for your daughter to study.
Best wishes
It is extremely exciting that we are beginning our work
to create a large brand new multi purpose library at
school this term. This will be almost triple the size of
the current library giving us space for many more
students. The old library will become a meeting room
and a space to celebrate the history of the school.

Building of the new LIFE Centre at the front of the
school also starts this term.
You can read of our sporting successes in this
newsletter. I want to particularly highlight our
involvement with the Australian national Futsal team
which is a partnership we hope to develop annually.
Cashless Catering in the canteen is explained in detail
by Mrs Gentle. Please check you understand how this
will benefit your daughter and how it will affect you.
Mrs Sidhu has arranged a questionnaire for parents
after every Parents’ Evening this year and I am
absolutely delighted with the results which show how
positive parents feel about the school. Thank you.

Lost Property
Please could you name your daughter’s property
including clothing and equipment as there is a growing
amount of unclaimed items in Resources. Mrs
Bayfield will be taking unclaimed items to the Veterans
of War Charity Shop in Romford after each half-term
break.

A reminder that Parents/Carers are not permitted to
drive onto the school premises during school hours
(8.30am - 3.30pm) for the safety of our students
unless there is an exceptional circumstance.
Parents/Carers are asked NOT to use the front part of
the drive as a drop off / pick up point as this not only
causes issues for other road users and vehicles that
need to enter or leave the premises, but is also a
safety concern for pedestrians which may include your
daughter.
Thank you

Cashless Catering
Coming Soon !!!
Good Bye Money !!
What is a Cashless System?
At the heart of the cashless system, there is a computer
allowing the system to recognise each individual
student, track individual balances, record spend and
receipts, on what food, on any specific date and time of
day.
How are students recognised by the system?
Don’t forget to return your consent forms to register for
the new Biometric (Thumb Print) catering system.
The system will be based on biometric finger patterns
and our supplier follows Government and BECTA
guidelines. Each student will have their finger pattern
registered which will then be translated into an
alphanumeric code, the image is then discarded, when
used this will then enter them into the system program
and identify them by a number. The system will also
allocate a unique PIN number to each user as well as
having a search facility to lookup individuals by name.
How is this used to obtain a school meal and
drinks?
No more money!
Shorter queues!
Use Parentpay to top-up
The student simply places their finger on a scanner at
the point of sale; a display will show the student’s name
and current balance held within the system. The
selected food and drink items will be entered into the
system from an itemised keyboard while the amount
spent and the new balance will show on the display.
Go Live Date 6th July 2015
How is money entered into the system?
We have been a cashless school since Sept 2013. We
are very pleased to announce that we are taking the
next step in the process with the introduction of
cashless catering this term. The system will enable us
to deliver a more efficient, faster service and to continue
to provide wholesome, healthy and enjoyable meals at
the lowest cost. Many local schools are already
operating cashless catering provision and have
identified a number of benefits outlined below.
The system will be based on biometric finger pattern
recognition. Registration of students will take place on
Th
th
30 June 2015 and 1st July 2015. On Monday 6 July
2015 the system will go live. The new system and the
current cash system will run parallel to begin with. We
will be testing the system on a small group of students
at first before rolling out to the whole school by
September 2015.

By ParentPay. ParentPay offers parents the
freedom to top-up their child’s account at any
time quickly and easily with a debit or credit
card. An electronic record of the payments can
be viewed online at any time.
PayPoint at local stores. For parents who are
unable to use their online Parentpay account
they can top up their child’s account in local
PayPoint stores. Those parents choosing the
PayPoint method will receive a payment card
through the post. Payments made by this
method can also be viewed online by logging
onto ParentPay. Cash will not be accepted at
school, at the till or in the Finance Office.
MAY 2015
How will students be able to check what their
current balance is?
There is a display at the till and Parentpay will keep
track of balances going up or down and can be viewed
each time a parent logs on.
Can all the money be spent on one day?
No, a daily spend limit will be set for all students and no
food above that limit can be bought. On written request
from parents, we can adjust this maximum spend figure
for individual students.
What if the student does not hold a sufficient
balance one day to pay for a school dinner?
As before, no student is refused a school dinner. The
school will allow for the student a ‘loan’ credit for one
day. However, as before, we would expect value to be
loaded by the next day.
What about students entitled to a free school
meals?
The system works exactly the same for all students
whether they pay or have a free school meal. All
students have their own account to use in exactly the
same way. The amount allocated for the free school
meal will be entered into the system by the software
daily and will only be accessible at dinner break. Any
underspend or missed dinner will not be added to the
next day’s balance.
You can add extra value to a Free School Meal account
in the same way as usual (ParentPay) to enable a
greater daily spend than the allowance. As the
allowance can only be spent on a school dinner, extra
value added can also be used for break time snacks
and drinks.
Data Handling
Certain data will be held on the system to enable
accurate operation. This will include name, form, photo,
account balance and meal entitlement. This data will
be handled under the guidelines of the Data Protection
Act and only used by parties directly involved with the
implementation of the system.
Main Benefits
•
Convenient way of paying for school meals. No
more looking for change every morning.
•
Alleviates many of the associated problems
with the use of cash in schools ie loss, theft and
bullying
•
Specific food allergy ingredients can be barred
automatically
•
Healthy eating is encouraged
•
Queuing times are reduced through increased
speed of service
•
Automatic free meal allocation with the student
remaining anonymous
•
Detailed reports to analyse all aspects of the
use of the system
•
Having control of student accounts teaches
important life skills
•
A more efficient delivery of service helps the
caterer to provide wholesome, healthy and
enjoyable school meals
•
Discourages school dinner money being spent
on less healthy options at the local shops
before or after school
If you have any queries or concerns please contact Mrs
Gentle on 01708 447368 ext 247 in the Finance Office.

Staff and students enjoyed a bake sale in The Lodge on
Wednesday 20th May to raise money for Nepal. We
have a connection with the earthquake disaster,
through Stand-by-me, in that we sponsor a young girl
called Eliza Thapa in Nepal. She is missing since the
first Gorkha earthquake and we are all hoping that she
can be found. She went home for Easter from her
school run by Stand-by-me in Hetauda to the remote
area of Khairang and unfortunately her village was
damaged by the earthquake, as it was in the
Kathmandu valley.
Staff and students managed to raise
a fantastic £145.57 in one lunchtime
and this money will be donated to
Stand-by-me to help with the relief
for the Nepal earthquake. Well done
to everyone who took part and the
Charity Committee who made and
iced 100 cupcakes to sell. Thanks
also go to staff who donated their
time and cakes to sell.
Fundraising update
We have received a certificate from Saint Francis
Hospice, congratulating The Francis Bardsley Academy
for Girls for their fundraising achievements. Since 1994
we have steadily raised money for the Hospice and this
week we have reached a staggering total of
£12,887.63. This was largely added to in 1997 and then
from 2000 onwards the total has continued to grow.
Recently the total was boosted by the MATCH project
and every year we are raising significant amounts. Well
done to the staff and students for reaching this amazing
total.

PSA News
The Farm
Following another successful Quiz Night, the PSA have
been able to buy and install blinds in the Dance Studio
to cover the mirrors during dance assessments and
assemblies. We are looking to provide the Dance
Studio with a graffiti mural on the back wall to brighten
up the space during the summer holidays – watch this
space!
The farm has been very busy during the past few
weeks. We have welcomed 150 students from Hylands
and Squirrels Primary Schools to visit the farm and
learn about animal groups and habitats. Our students
demonstrated how to care for animals and acted as
Farm Ambassadors as they accompanied the guests
around the Farm. There have been many requests
from other schools to visit in the autumn when our new
building is completed.

Farm on the move
The farm will have a fabulous new home in the autumn
with a new building and more space. Our animals have
moved to Lambourne End Farm whilst the work is being
completed and the farm and lodge students will take up
th
their temporary residence in the 6 Form block. During
the break the students will still be able to care for the
bunnies and guinea pigs as they will remain until the
summer holidays. Lorna Childs 9B, Emily Green 9B
