Would YOU like to
start school at

Do you like mornings? Many teenagers don’t! This is why …
BEFORE YOU READ:
What time do you get up?
What time does your school start?
BEEP! BEEP!
It’s 7.30am. Chris, 13,
looks at the alarm clock*.
He goes back to sleep.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
It’s 8.00am. Chris wakes
up and goes back to sleep.
“CHRIS!!” It’s his mum.
“It’s 8.30!” Chris gets up.
“I hate mornings!” he says.
Many teenagers don’t like
mornings! Scientists at
Oxford University, England,
have some new information.
“Teenagers aren’t lazy,*” says
Professor Russell Foster.
“They have a different body
clock*”. Teenagers are two hours
behind adults* – so, when it is
nine o’clock, a teenager’s body
thinks it is seven o’clock!
One head teacher* in
Newcastle, England, has an
idea. He thinks pupils learn
better in the afternoon. He wants
his school to start at eleven o’clock
in the morning, not at nine o’clock.
So, pupils at this school can have a lie-in*!
