Welcome to my class. We will be covering and building on many skills in third grade. Below I’ve provided the syllabus that we will be following. I’ve tried to make it detailed and user friendly, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you! Mrs. Loewe School phone number: (830) 914-1065 Email: [email protected] Conference time: 1:10-1:50 (please schedule ahead) Grading Policy: Grades are weighted at 40% for daily grades and 60% for major grades. If a student fails a test, there will be an opportunity for re-teaching and a re-test will be given after the re-teach. The student will re-test on a weighted scale to earn a maximum of 90%. Late Work: After an absence, students have as many days as they were absent to make up the work without penalty. An assignment turned in late will be noted in the communication folder. Two days late will result in a ten percent deduction to the assignment’s grade. After that, a zero may be recorded in the grade book. Third Grade Behavior Expectations: Listen to instructions. Enter and exit prepared (with materials and work). Always try your best! Respect yourself and others (this includes keeping hands, feet, and objects to yourself). No excuses (take responsibility). 3rd Grade ELAR Syllabus Grading Period 1st 9 Weeks Content Vowel sounds and consonants Homophones/Homographs Fictional story elements (characters, setting, problem, solution, climax) Making predictions Context clues Theme Character change Dictionary skills Differentiating different fictional genres Projects Fiction book story wheel/book report Write a twisted fairytale 2nd 9 Weeks 3rd 9 Weeks Identify narrator Common prefixes and suffixes Synonyms/Antonyms Biography/Autobiography Cause/Effect Drawing conclusions/Making inferences Drama/Reader’s Theater Poetry and poetic elements Author’s Purpose Contractions Nouns/Verbs/Adjectives Subject/Predicates to form complete sentences Formulate sentences into a paragraph The writing process Editing marks Poetry and poetic elements Making predictions Common prefixes/suffixes Expository text and text/graphic features Homophones/Homographs Synonyms/Antonyms Author’s Purpose Dictionary Skills Drawing conclusions/Making inferences Main idea/Supporting details Cause/Effect Personal narrative Verbs Commas Procedural text Author’s purpose Synonyms/Antonyms Homographs/Homophones Persuasive text Palindromes Idioms Common prefixes/suffixes Literary nonfiction Review fictional story Community helper research paper Persuasive letter 4th 9 Weeks structure Fact/Opinion Cause/Effect Dictionary skills Pronouns Apostrophes Commas Dialogue Review fictional story structure and elements Review nonfiction story structure and elements Review author’s purpose Review poetry Review text and graphic features Review all figurative language Fact/Opinion Cause/Effect Dictionary skills Synonyms/Antonyms Common prefixes/suffixes Novel study Friendly letter STAAR Tests
