Activity Series: Check single replacement reactions only!!
• Compare the element with what it is trying to replace
in the compound.
• If the element is more reactive (higher on the list)
than what it is trying to replace, the reaction will
occur.
• If the element is less reactive (lower down on the list)
than what it is trying to replace, the reaction will not
occur.

Special Decomposition Reactions
Type I.
Examples:
Hydroxide Decomposition
Mg(OH)2 --> MgO + H2 O
2 NaOH --> Na2 O + H2 O
Description: metal hydroxide decomposes into the
metal oxide and water
Type II.
Chlorate Decomposition
Examples: 2 Al(ClO3 )3 --> 2 AlCl3 + 9 O2
2 KClO3 --> 2 KCl + 3 O2
Description: metal chlorate decomposes into the
metal chloride and oxygen
Type III. Carbonate Decomposition
Examples: Li2 CO3 --> Li2 O + CO2
CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
Description: metal carbonate decomposes into the
metal oxide and carbon dioxide
