How do we spell success?

How do we spell success?
ANNUAL REPORT 2013
How do you spell success? The Lawrence Schools Foundation and Lawrence Education
Achievement Partners “spell” it by supporting and enhancing public education in
Lawrence, Kansas. In 2013, the Foundation and LEAP continued to leverage your
support in many ways. We provided thousands of dollars in innovative teaching grants
and recognized four exemplary educators, two of whom were surprised with gifts of
$10,000 and $5,000. We administered more than $75,000 in student scholarships and
continued making our $100,000 annual investment in the early childhood education
program for at-risk preschoolers. We provided more than $1.5 million of in-kind support
across the district. Looking toward the future, our board of trustees has identified career training as a point
of emphasis. We are anxious to support USD 497 as it works toward opening the Dwayne Peaslee Career and
College Center and opportunities to enhance career training become available. It takes a lifetime of
commitment to spell success. Our commitment to today’s youth is unwavering. On behalf of the board of
trustees, thank you for your past support. Please join us this year as we support and enhance public education
in our community.—Martin Moore, President, Board of Trustees

Dear Friends…
A Message from the Director…
Depending on age and experience, we all view being successful in different ways and
from varying perspectives. Webster’s defines success as “the achievement of something
desired, intended, or attempted.” Of course, it is also defined as “the gaining of fame
or prosperity.” So, what do we mean when we want every child in the Lawrence Public
Schools to be successful? We want to provide support in ways that will encourage
students to be challenged, that will keep them in school, and that will excite them about
their futures. We want to help motivate teachers by funding innovative projects, as well
as giving them the basic tools they need to educate each individual child. In my world,
success means giving every child in Lawrence the same opportunities to learn, create, grow, and become
someone they want to be. Success may be hard to define, but we all know it when we see it. That’s all we want
for our children — and we appreciate that you do, too!
—Susan Esau, Executive Director

Enrichment Experiences
Recognition
Students at every school in our district benefited from Foundation grants in 2013. Nearly $216,000 supported
Pre-K teacher salaries, student incentive and motivational projects, school gardens, material to build solar
energy ovens, sensory intervention tools, Tubano drums, Baker Wetlands field trips, and more. Interactive
library books, heart rate monitors for learning and assessment, robotics kits, math enrichment software,
and flip cameras are examples of technology we funded that helped keep students engaged and challenged.
These grants are possible with our donor-inspired funds for specific uses:
The Foundation presented 2013 cash awards to the following outstanding educators:
•Bobs Award for Excellence in Teaching: Ryan McAdoo, Kindergarten teacher, Hillcrest Elementary
•Dedication to Education Award: Morgan Randle, Special Education para-educator, Southwest Middle School
•Golden Apple Awards: Emili Stoll, 1st grade teacher, Sunset Hill Elementary; and Jo Huntsinger, biology and
pre-med teacher, Lawrence High School
•Barbara Hodgson Dream to Achieve Award: Melissa Turpin, 5th Grade teacher, New York Elementary

Post-graduation Opportunities
With 55 awards presented to graduating seniors and college students in 2013, the Foundation demonstrated its
commitment to rewarding successful students who plan to continue their education after high school. Gifts for
Foundation scholarships are often made in memory of, or to honor, loved ones. Many are established to assist
young leaders in pursuit of specific educational and life goals, as well as support our youth who are part of
a unique population. Interested in studying business at KU or planning a career in medicine or science?
Does your student desire to help provide young people access to better lives? Organizations in Lawrence
are also establishing new awards in conjunction with Career and Technical Education pathways to help
potential, future employees on their path to successful futures.

Celebrations
Nearly 140 teachers helped produce the 23rd Annual Foundation Follies on April 19, 2013 at Liberty Hall
with their contributions of time, talent, and — sometimes — extravagant costumes to raise money for the
Foundation’s Innovative Teaching Grants and School Assistance Grant programs.
More than 500 guests celebrated public education in Lawrence on September 6, 2013 at the Foundation’s
12th Annual Community Education Breakfast. Keynote speaker Corinne Brinkerhoff, LHS ’98, entertained with
stories of favorite teachers and her experiences in Hollywood as an Emmy-winning television writer.
Classroom Support
Support for professional development, grants for school and classroom needs, and district recruitment
assistance are all important pieces to retaining quality educators in the Lawrence Public Schools.
The Foundation and our community partners believe this — and so do our educators! In fact, approximately
40 percent of district staff made donations through payroll deductions to the Foundation in 2013!

ENGAGEMENT !
Business Community Partnerships
2013-2014 LEAP Partners
The mission of the Lawrence Education Achievement Partners (LEAP) is to foster effective community
partnerships that support and enrich student achievement and success in the Lawrence Public Schools.
For more than 20 years, the LEAP program has worked with an average of 100 active business and other
community organizations each year. Each one of our schools has LEAP support. In many schools, or for
district-wide programs such as the performing arts, several partners may collaborate to provide a wide
range of experiences for the students. Other partners may focus on in-depth curriculum enrichment
activities, tutoring, buying meals for teachers during conference time, or donating school supplies.
What do our partners receive in return? Their employees may acquire additional skills they can use in
the workplace, as well as increased satisfaction with their jobs. The organization increases its visibility
in the community and helps children discover how classroom learning links to future careers.

Some of our community partners not only contribute to the schools through LEAP activities, but they also
make monetary donations to the Foundation or sponsor Foundation events. When this combined support totals
$10,000 or more in a school year for that partner, their organization is recognized as a Master LEAP Partner!
