The Rocky River
Education Foundation
Mission Statement
The purpose of The Rocky River
Education Foundation shall be to
enrich and provide added quality to
the educational experience in our
community; to encourage further
development of specialized talents,
skills and academic achievements
for individual students, faculty
or administrators; to continue
the educational traditions that
have contributed to Rocky River’s
reputation as an outstanding
suburban community.
The Rocky River Education
Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)
(3) corporation directed by a Board
of Trustees organized for the
purpose of soliciting contributions
to fund teacher grants in the Rocky
River City School District. The
Foundation also administers financial
awards through over 40 individually
designated scholarship funds.
O
n behalf of the entire Board of the
Rocky River Education Foundation,
we would like to thank all of our
friends and supporters, and the staff and
administration of Rocky River City Schools for
helping make last year a resounding success for
the Foundation. Once again, we have had many
accomplishments thanks to your commitment
and dedication. Our Foundation moved
forward on many fronts and continues to lay
the groundwork for even greater successes in
the future.
Our annual Fundraiser last March, “A Sky Full
of Stars,” was a spectacular evening for all.
The event was, once again, a sellout success for
the Foundation. I would like to recognize and
thank our Presenting sponsors: First Federal of
Lakewood Bank, Brindza, McIntyre and Seed
LLP, and The Hardington Salemaker Team,
Howard Hanna Real Estate for their generous
support of the event and our Foundation. I
also want to thank and recognize our Event
sponsors: Legacy Capital Partners and The
Robenalt Law Firm, as well as our corporate
sponsors: Squire Patton Boggs, Westwood
Town Center, Advantage Consulting Service,
The Kim Crane Group, Howard Hanna Real
Estate: Kim Crane, Jen Davis & Barb Gifford,
Lakewood Dental – Dr. Matthew Smith DDS,
& The Soter Group at Morgan Stanley.
A very special “thank you” goes out to our CoChairs Kerry Capka and Kendal Purohit and
the entire Fundraising Committee for putting
together such a fabulous night. Don’t miss next
year’s event on March 12, 2016 at Westwood
Country Club!
Students, teachers and staff from every school
in the District benefitted from our efforts.
Over $78,000 in educator grants were funded
to our teachers spanning over the past two
years, from enhancements in music therapy,
to forensics, from math stations to National
History Day experiences, from 3-D printers
to graphic art tools, from playgrounds to
band trailers, from communication devices
for speech therapy to new books and reading
materials across the entire district. The
funding for all of the grants awarded last year
is solely due to your contributions.
In addition to our teacher grant program,
RREF continued funding efforts for the
Rocky River City Schools Speaker Series. The
foundation had a special fundraising effort
at its annual auction in March and raised
just under $16,000 for the RRCS Speaker
Series to bring authors and/or speakers to our
schools annually through the district. Look for
announcements regarding upcoming speaker
presentations.
The Foundation awarded $46,500 in
scholarships that we administer to the 2015
graduating seniors at the High School Awards
Assembly last May. I want to personally thank
all of our scholarship donors, many of whom
set up scholarships with us in remembrance
of loved ones. Your dedication to helping
the students of Rocky River pursue their
dreams and aspirations is to be applauded and
commended.
Finally, I am excited to report that we have
over $43,000 available for grants during the
current school year. We will award grants on
three separate review periods and cannot wait
to see the creativity, passion and energy of our
teachers and staff that shine through in the
grant applications. Thank you for helping this
Foundation have such a positive impact on the
students in the Rocky River City Schools, as
well as the Rocky River Community. Let’s keep
the momentum going & growing!
Please visit our website at rredfoundation.org
and our Facebook page to see what is going on
with the Foundation and look for more content
this year.
Thank you for your support,
Michelle M. Pike

Make your own Homemade
Gingerbread House! It’s great
family fun!
It is easy to do with our preassembled Gingerbread House and kit.
The kit includes: preassembled house, candy and frosting.
Susan was a French teacher at Rocky River High School but she
earned her living by touching students’ lives. She was also the second
oldest of eight children. Each holiday season her mother would
carefully bake and assemble a family gingerbread house. They would
gather together and decorate the home for the table centerpiece.
The smell of gingerbread and candy was very tempting but everyone
knew no picking until after the New Year. This family tradition has
given Susan’s siblings such joyful memories that they would like to
share it with others!
These homes are made from scratch, assembled and packaged by
family members. Deliveries can be be made right to your doorstep.
Pre assembled homemade gingerbread houses are available in a
variety of sizes. Kits can also be purchased including everything you
need to start decorating a unique holiday tradition.. They are great
for gifts or a group decorating party!
One hundred percent of the profits from the sales of the gingerbread
houses will go to the Susan Thibo Scholarship Fund.

Speaker Series
The Rocky River City Schools Speaker Series continues its
new tradition of funding authors/speakers to visit Rocky River
students. RREF’s special fundraising effort--Raise the Pirate-raised over $15,000 for the Speaker Series at its annual auction.
In February 2015, children’s advocate and award-winning author
Trudy Ludwig visited Goldwood and Kensington schools to talk
with students about making healthy friendship choices.
This December, best-selling author Jodi Picoult will visit the
high school. Picoult’s novels were featured for the 2015 summer
reading program. Students are in the process of writing their own
narratives, including a chapter to “add” to a Picoult novel and an
original narrative.
“It’s one thing to learn about how to write from a textbook or
a teacher, but our students are offered a completely raw and
personal experience by hearing from a master first hand”, explains
RRHS English department chair Stephanie Minotti. “They have
the ability to interact personally in ways that text and videos just
can’t provide.”
Most importantly, the visiting authors get students excited about
books and help encourage a lifelong love of reading.
RREF Supports “Exceptional
Opportunities” in Technology
A grant from the Rocky
River Education Foundation
provided RRHS students in
the Digital Age Thinking
class the opportunity to
build a computer, using parts
researched and recommended
by students. Students in the
class worked on teams to
un-package the parts and
determine which ones would
work best in each computer.
They began by choosing the
processor and motherboard
that would result in the best
performance. This project
taught the students how to work in teams to accomplish the goal of
building a working computer. They also worked on their problem solving
skills by determining which parts would fit together properly and how
to connect everything to
the motherboard. Students
encountered some difficulties
along the way, but their
perseverance paid off when
it came time to plug the
computers in. Computer Club
will soon begin working on this
project, as well.
At Goldwood, to make library
exchange time even more
meaningful and to create
more opportunities for free
exploration, discovery and
6
creativity, Anne Tomazin created the “TinkerSpace.” Like a junior
version of the high school’s MakerSpace, the Tinkerspace allows
students to further explore S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering,
art, and math) activities. The space is comprised of “tinker stations,”
some adult guided, some student lead, and some self-guided.
Tomazin explains the far reaching goals of the space, “Sparking a
student’s interest in engineering through the use of a marble run or
magnetic gears may not be fully realized until they become a civil or
mechanical engineer. Encouraging expression through art or building
may someday lead a student to the field of architecture. Completing
a simple puzzle by moving the turtle through the maze on a SMART
board could be performed by a future software coder.”
Funded in part through an RREF grant, the TinkerSpace will continue
to evolve along with its students.
Supporting Rocky River
Graduates Through
Scholarships
Your gift to the future of
our students is vital and tax
deductible.
This spring, forty-one scholarships, totaling
$45,000, were awarded to the Class of 2015. With
some scholarships being multi-year awards, RREF
disbursed a total of $50,000.
£ Contributor (up to $49) £ Friend ($50-$99)
£ Supporter ($100-$249)
£ Patron ($250-$499)
£ Benefactor ($500-$999) £ Champion ($1,000 and over)
Scholarships are given out by generous donors
for a variety of reasons. RREF administers the
scholarships on behalf of donors. Many families or
friends may have lost a loved one with a connection
to River, and they want to create a memorial
scholarship in their loved one’s name. The criteria
for receiving the scholarship reflects that loved one’s
passions, talents, or personality. It is a wonderful
way to continue to celebrate the life of one who
is gone, and it benefits deserving Rocky River
graduates for many years.
Multiply Your Gift
Other scholarships are created because the donor
has an interest in promoting specific educational
areas such as engineering, world language studies,
or music. Still other scholarships aim to reward
students who “do it all” in high school - achieving
academic excellence, being involved in the arts
and sports, and taking foreign languages. Finally,
some scholarships honor students who have faced
unknown obstacles in high school and have been
able to graduate against the odds.
RREF Scholarship Committee chair Molly Clark
says, “the fact that we have six new scholarships this
year and many more long-standing scholarships
administered by RREF reflects the generosity of
the Rocky River community and their commitment
to supporting advanced education for our students.”
