School Overview
Rowland Hall is an independent school serving 930 students from 2PreK through twelfth grade on two campuses in
Salt Lake City. Founded as an Episcopal school in 1867, Rowland Hall has been an independent institution since
1933. Rowland Hall’s mission is “to inspire students to lead ethical and productive lives through a college
preparatory program that promotes the pursuit of academic and personal excellence.” The school offers a
progressive education that includes a rigorous academic program, excellence in the arts, competitive athletic
programs, and a nurturing and inclusive community. Located near the base of the stunning Wasatch mountain range
and adjacent to the University of Utah, a world-class research university and medical center, Rowland Hall attracts a

Middle School
Rowland Hall Middle School (grades 6-8) serves 210 students and is focused on the academic, emotional, and social
growth of students. The Middle School runs a 7-day rotating schedule with hour-long classes that allow students
and faculty to see each other at different times of day. Faculty collaborate to integrate more interdisciplinary
learning, experiential and field studies, and work with their colleagues and administrators to enhance their skills and
practices in the classroom. The Middle School runs a 1-1 iPad program with Apple TVs in most classrooms and
most faculty host their curriculum in iTunes U. The Middle School has a strong culture for experiential education
including grade level class trips in the fall, five afternoons of Winter Sports, and a growing list of opportunities for
outdoor education.
Job Summary:
The function of the Middle School Social-Emotional Support Counselor is to be a safe, supportive advocate from
which all students can obtain guidance or short-term interventions, referrals, and recommendations. The counselor
should provide a welcoming, supportive presence and proactively create nurturing, supportive relationships with all
students. The counselor supports the administrative team and faculty with mental health recommendations and
classroom interventions. The counselor serves as the point person for parents, guardians, faculty and staff, and
administrators about student social, emotional, and mental health issues. In addition, the counselor collaborates
with other faculty and staff to lead and facilitate community, character, and wellness education programs.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
● Student & Family Support: Provides counseling and crisis interventions for students and supports families
with resources and referrals regarding issues of student social and emotional concern
● Faculty and Administration Support: Collaborates with faculty and administration regarding students’ social
and emotional needs
● Administrative Tasks: Maintains confidential student documentation, plans, and interprets pyschoeducational reports for school personnel and serves as liaison to local professional mental health services
● Program Development & Leadership: Along with Director of Ethical Education and middle school
administration and faculty, develop curriculum and lead instruction in health and wellness classes, advisory
program, student assemblies, parent forums, and student council
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
● Master’s degree in school counseling, psychology, or social work
● School counseling experience with middle school aged children and/or short-term counseling and crisis
intervention
● Working knowledge of developmental process: social, emotional, and cognitive
● Ability to interpret psycho-educational assessments
● Familiarity with resource information and referral sources
● Strong interpersonal, technology, and organizational skills
● A positive and contributing member of a professional community with a desire to work in a highly
collaborative environment
