What better time to study the human body than
February, National Heart Month?
FIRST & second grades
3rd Grade
First Graders are becoming more comfortable with the idea of topic
guidance. They enthusiastically embraced the physical science unit,
creating slime in a cup, rude noises with a straw, and magnetic
levitation. This month they will draw the body outline and
brainstorm the insides of a first grader. (No pun intended ) Second
graders provided us with a wonderful “concert” using their home
made music makers. Their study of sound led them into discoveries
of vibration and volume. They also explored other forms of energy
and how matter can change. This month second graders will fill in
their own body outlines with paper cut-outs of body organs as we
study the main organ systems and how they work together.
THIRD GRADE
Third Grade students explore the five senses and their corresponding
organs, and create models of the ear and eyeball. They dissect a
cow’s tongue and also take a closer look at a real brain. We’ll add
several new terms to the scientific lexicon: icky, gooey, yucky, and
the ever-popular “Eeeewww.”
5th grade
FOURTH GRADE
Fourth Graders focus their studies on the digestive system in part
one of the unit, and on the circulatory and respiratory systems in
part two. We dissect a heart, lung and trachea set, examining the
chamber structure and valves and inflating the lungs. We also discuss
ways to keep our body systems healthy through good choices in
nutrition and behavior.
Fifth Graders, 3rd Quarter unit
“Health Care and Healthy Living.”
Fifth Graders finished their PVC instrument and have moved on into
the new quarter. They now are discovering what it means to “think
like a physician.” Each student was assigned a medical specialty and
will spend the unit becoming the resident expert in their field. (I
address them as “Dr.”) We plan several dissections of organs and
organ systems including the heart and cardiovascular system, the
lungs and respiratory system, the kidney and excretory system, and
the digestive system. We hope to visit Munson Medical Center and
speak with a practicing physician and medical educator. This unit
runs through March and ends the last day before spring break.
