Dedication: Arthur “Chip” G. Connolly, III, Esq.
One has only to look at Chip Connolly’s record of service to see the depth of
his commitment to Sacred Heart Village. Chip was appointed to the Sacred
Heart Village Board of Directors in 1998 -- a full three years before the first tenants took up residency in 2001. This clearly shows the important part he
played in planning and development, as well as the tremendous work behind
the scenes that made Sacred Heart Village a reality.
A gentle and humble man, Chip played a leadership role in supporting the
vision of Sacred Heart Village and with our sponsoring agency, the Ministry of
Caring. Through his legal career, he has given of his talent and experience to
improve the quality of life for our residents.
We dedicate the 2007 Sacred Heart Village Annual Report to Chip Connolly in recognition of his many years of
service. Thank you, Chip, for all you have done for Sacred Heart Village, where seniors can find friendship,
comfort and security.

Beginning in October, 2006, we celebrated Sacred Heart Village’s fifth
anniversary with a whole year of special activities. How appropriate to
celebrate such a beautiful place to live, the culmination of many years of
planning and dreaming! We celebrate six years of quality, senior living
and I am grateful to God for the residents and the many people from the
Wilmington community who have supported our vision.
! We have created a medical office and are working with a local hospital to establish an ongoing family practice that would be open to
residents and to the neighborhood;
! We have also created a fitness center, recreational rooms, an office
for the Service Coordinator, and a changing area for
doorman/security.
We thank the congressional delegation, especially Senator Joseph Biden,
who were instrumental in obtaining the funds through the federal budget.
We are saddened by the news that our founding board member, Mayor
William T. McLaughlin, so instrumental in helping us develop the design
plan for Sacred Heart Village, passed away. We mourn his passing and
remember his many contributions to the quality of life for residents at
Sacred Heart Village.
We give thanks to all — especially Bill — who have made Sacred Heart
Village what it is today: a place where its residents can celebrate the Joy of
Life.
Warm regards,
Br. Ronald Giannone, OFM Cap.

The Joy of Life
Excitement: that’s what many people feel when they walk into
Sacred Heart Village. It may be the smiles on the faces of the
door/security staff as they welcome you. It may be the warm
greetings from the people “at the bus stop” (as part of the
lobby is known to residents). It may be the safe, secure feeling you get when you walk down attractively decorated hallways. Or it may be the pride that residents take in decorating
their homes in a style that fits their personality. Whatever it
is, everyone agrees: Sacred Heart Village is a great place to
experience the Joy of Life. Pictured (l to r) are Annie Fields, Angel Santiago and Marie Annone.

“I believe that it doesn’t matter what you have or what you don’t have,” says resident Ethel
Anderson. “What matters is that you keep what you do have nice.”
Her philosophy comes through in her immaculately kept apartment at Sacred Heart Village.
From her cozy living room to her complete collection of miniature glass, china, and stone elephants, Ethel loves her apartment at Sacred Heart Village. “It’s my home.”

Adjacent to Sacred Heart Village is Francis X. Norton
Center, a senior activity center operated by the Ministry
of Caring, our sponsoring agency. At FXN, residents
join seniors from the surrounding community at activities like quilting, games, bingo, and movie viewing. As
part of their regular schedule of activities, residents can
take the FXN shuttle bus to local banks, pharmacies,
supermarkets, and shopping centers. Periodically, the
bus also visits regional tourist attractions like Cowtown
and Lancaster for lunch and shopping. Pictured are

Nearby Benedictine Park, a private park next to
Sacred Heart Village, provides residents with a beautiful, peaceful respite from their busy day. Flowering
bushes and shrubs surround the park’s perimeter,
making it an oasis from the hustle and bustle of the
surrounding city.

Life
Robert McCrae, right, of Friar’s Cafe and Convenience Store,
offers residents selection, quality, and convenience. Located
on the lobby level, the Friar’s Cafe provides reasonably-priced
breakfast and lunch, a selection that changes daily, and
homemade treats for those on the run, all without leaving the
building.
!
The Friar’s Convenience Store, located on the lower
level, is open weekdays for two to four hours to help
meet the needs of residents in between grocery shopping trips. Using feedback from the residents, the
store constantly introduces new items that are in
demand. Down the hall are vending
machines. Clarence Raynor, left, stops
by a new favorite vending machine for
residents: ice cream.

Construction began on the lower level of Sacred Heart
Village. When completed, the area will feature a
state-of-the-art fitness center, a recreation room, an
arts and crafts room, an office for Linda Richardson,

medical practice.

A new social group, the Red Hat Society of Sacred

Three years old and growing, the Sacred Heart

provides a creative and social outlet for many residents.

Gregory Adams, M.D., right, a volunteer physician,
comes once a week to discuss health concerns and
to assist residents in getting refills for their prescriptions. Dr. Adams doesn’t replace the residents’ family
doctor, he is a resource to help residents develop
healthier lifestyle choices.
