Beowulf Creative Project
Mrs. Rolfs
British Literature (H)
Projects are due Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at the beginning of class.
Choose one of the following to complete for one quiz grade. You may work independently or
with one partner. We may have a small amount of class time to work on this during class on
Tuesday, but mostly it needs to be completed on your own time. You must be prepared to
present your project to class next Wednesday. The oral presentation is a significant part of your
grade so be sure you practice what you are going to say ahead of time.
** Remember to provide specific details on your references to the text by citing line numbers.
Remember: If you work with a partner, your project must represent the work of two people. Be prepared
after the presentation to explain how you each contributed to the project.
Comic book — Beowulf is a story that lends itself well to an action/adventure comic book.
Create a comic book based on the story of Beowulf. Include key quotes within the captions or
dialogue and cite by listing line number from the text. End with the meaning of the work (as a
moral or epilogue).
Board game — Create a board game based on the characters and events in Beowulf. A player
should be able to learn what happens in Beowulf by playing the game. Cite specific lines from
the text. Include clearly written instructions, some type of board, and all playing pieces.
Illustrate a book cover or a scene — Imagine you have been hired to illustrate a new printed
edition of Beowulf. Illustrate a scene from Beowulf on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper and explain
your artistic creation by citing specific lines in the text that will demonstrate why you chose
each element. For example in line 35 we learn that Grendel has claws. All work must be handillustrated – no computer generated images accepted.
Dramatic Interpretation — Interpret a scene from Beowulf. Write a screenplay by
paraphrasing, then dress as the character(s) and perform the scene for the class. Some
suggested scenes include Grendel’s first attack, the battle between Beowulf and Grendel, the
attack of Grendel’s mother, Beowulf’s battle with Grendel’s mother, or the battle with the
dragon. Make sure you cite the exact passage (lines) as you introduce the scene to your
audience.
